Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Playing basketball teaches everything you need to succeed in life, including teamwork, discipline, commitment, dedication, and the value of hard work. The most successful players don't just put the ball in the basket-they apply what they've learned to their own lives so they can be successful on and off the court. John Berry, who has coached for more than twenty years, shares basketball tips infused with life lessons in this guidebook to the game and life. Lessons include: When the coach screams at a player, the player tunes out the words. When the coach whispers, the player strains to hear. If your dreams don't scare you, they aren't big enough. Your teeth should be chattering. Go for it. The sky is the limit. Emulate the janitor-first in, last out, works hard, does the dirty work, no expectation of limelight or praise. This is the ultimate team player. Critics, doubters, pessimists-they're all insignificant. All that matters is what you believe. Believe in yourself.

In his research for How to Be Like Coach Wooden, Pat Williams recounts well over 800 interviews. The result is an inspiring motivational biography about a great hero of basketball and one of the most amazing leaders in history. How to Be Like Coach Wooden is the next dynamic book in the How to Be Like "character biography" series, which focuses on drawing out important lessons from the lives of great men and women. In this book, readers will learn from Coach Wooden, a beacon of honesty, goodness and faith. Wooden cared about winning in basketball, but he cared more about winning in life.

Book excerpt: It is my intent in the writing of this book to reveal a few of the many lessons (in life) that should be taught to our student athletes. We must be able to reach each individual's heart and mind through the understanding of these methods, concepts and ideas. I firmly believe we must develop the character of the student athlete first in order for them to achieve success in life and through this development of character the student athlete will establish a firm foundation on which to make sound decisions. The coaching of basketball allows an opportunity to teach and establish positive morals and values and in doing so will allow the student athlete a foundation from which they can reasonably expect success. We as coaches, parents and educators must help to develop the minds and hearts of our young student athletes if we are to succeed and flourish as a nation. It is my belief that through a successful sports program, such positive ideas, concepts and methods can be taught and expressed. I believe such ideas as setting goals, the development of a positive attitude and self-discipline are essential in the growth and well-being of our student athletes and our nation. Hopefully, through the teaching of these ideas and methods, individual growth will continue and with an expanded self awareness, selfishness will be replaced by selflessness. When this transformation of the heart and mind is complete and when we, as individuals, turn from selfishness to selflessness, all mankind will begin to fully understand the meaning of God's love. It is through the acceptance of God's love, we as His creation are drawn to Jesus Christ. For God is love and it is only through knowing Jesus Christ that love truly lives. I wholeheartedly believe, that with this new found knowledge of Christ, will come eternal truth, faith, hope and salvation. (John 3:16) Respectfully, Phil Ripton

Book excerpt: Legendary University of North Carolina basketball coach Dean Smith tells the full story of his fabled career, and shares the life lessons taught and learned over forty years of unparalleled success as a coach and mentor. For almost forty years, Dean Smith coached the University of North Carolina men's basketball program with unsurpassed success- on the court and in shaping young men's lives. In his long-awaited memoir, he reflects on the great games, teams, players, strategies, and rivalries that defined his career, and explains the philosophy that guided him. There's a lot more to life than basketball- though some may beg to differ- but there's a lot more to basketball than basketball, and this is a book about basketball filled with wisdom about life. Dean Smith insisted that the fundamentals of good basketball were the fundamentals of character- passion, discipline, focus, selflessness, and responsibility- and he strove to unite his teams in pursuit of those values. To read this book is to understand why Dean Smith changed the lives of the players he coached, from Michael Jordan, who calls him his second father and who never played a single NBA game without wearing a pair of UNC basketball shorts under his uniform, to the last man on the bench of his least talented team. We all wish we had a coach like Dean Smith in our lives, and now we will have that chance.

A Sense of Where You Are, McPhee's first book, is about Bradley when he was the best basketball player Princeton had ever seen. McPhee delineates for the reader the training and techniques that made Bradley the extraordinary athlete he was, and this part of the book is a blueprint of superlative basketball. But athletic prowess alone would not explain Bradley's magnetism, which is in the quality of the man himself—his self-discipline, his rationality, and his sense of responsibility. Here is a portrait of Bradley as he was in college, before his time with the New York Knicks and his election to the U.S. Senate—a story that suggests the abundant beginnings of his professional careers in sport and politics.

Book excerpt: Growing Up Great, by Butch Pierre, chronicles his lifelong love and coaching of basketball and serves as a template for moral and upright living, in and out of sports. His memoir enlightens the reader to the development of high school and college/university basketball coaching and recruiting, as he grew through the ranks, setting and breaking records, amazing coaches and peers alike while developing his own style. Butch Pierre also gives a glimpse into his strict upbringing and faith-based family life in Louisiana. His father, who almost died when Pierre was young, miraculously survived to encourage Pierre to strive for greatness in all that he set out to accomplish. Pierre's promise to his mother that she would one day see him on television buoyed his spirit and underscored his earnest efforts not to disappoint her. His steadfast adherence to his parents' teachings, enrichment of his faith, determination to surpass the ills of society without letting them distract him from his goals clearly illustrates the making of a person of destiny. Butch Pierre has become one of the most successful assistant basketball coaches in the country, a great recruiter, and an exemplary husband and parent--not only to his own children--Langley, Joe, and Josh--but also to his young basketball recruits. His lifework is a testament to his belief that anyone, no matter how humble his or her beginnings, can achieve greatness. Furthermore, once greatness is achieved, it becomes incumbent upon that successful individual to share valuable life lessons with others.
