Book Synopsis Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry and Its Applications by : Peter H. Dawson
Download or read book Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry and Its Applications written by Peter H. Dawson and published by American Institute of Physics. This book was released on 1995 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Market: Those involved in laboratory chemical analysis, atmospheric chemistry, and atomic and molecular physics. Long regarded as the standard introduction to the field, Quadrupole Mass Spectrometry and Its Applications provides today's engineers and scientists with an authoritative, wide-ranging overview of the development and uses of quadrupoles. Beginning with the basic operating principles of quadrupole devices, the book moves from general explanations of the actions of radio-frequency fields to descriptions of their utilization in quadrupole mass filters, monopoles, three-dimensional quadrupole ion traps, and various time-of -flight spectrometers. A concluding series of chapters examines fundamental applications of quadrupoles in atomic and subatomic physics, gas chromatography, upper atmospheric research, medicine, and environmental studies.
Book Synopsis Portable, Remotely Operated, Computer-controlled, Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer for Field Use by :
Download or read book Portable, Remotely Operated, Computer-controlled, Quadrupole Mass Spectrometer for Field Use written by and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A portable, remote-controlled mass spectrometer was required at the Nevada Test Site to analyze prompt post-event gas from the nuclear cavity in support of the underground testing program. A Balzers QMG-511 quadrupole was chosen for its ability to be interfaced to a DEC LSI-11 computer and to withstand the ground movement caused by this field environment. The inlet system valves, the pumps, the pressure and temperature transducers, and the quadrupole mass spectrometer are controlled by a read-only-memory-based DEC LSI-11/2 with a high-speed microwave link to the control point which is typically 30 miles away. The computer at the control point is a DEC LSI-11/23 running the RSX-11 operating system. The instrument was automated as much as possible because the system is run by inexperienced operators at times. The mass spectrometer has been used on an initial field event with excellent performance. The gas analysis system is described, including automation by a novel computer control method which reduces operator errors and allows dynamic access to the system parameters.

This book was released on 2015 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new technique that couples a Desert Research Institute (DRI) Model 2001 Thermal Optical Carbon Analyzer (TOA) to an electron impaction ionization-quadrupole mass spectrometer (EI-QMS) is developed to analyze major chemical constituents of particulate matter (PM). This thermal desorption-mass spectrometry (TOA-QMS) technique is able to acquire particulate organics, sulfate, nitrate, and ammonium mass concentrations, as well as the ratios of oxygen (O), hydrogen (H), and nitrogen (N) to carbon (C), i.e., O/C, H/C, and N/C, as well as the ratio of organic matter (OM) to organic carbon (OC) in a single analysis. The analysis is conducted on archived quartz-fiber filter samples, which can cover large spatial and temporal scales. This thesis first describes the experimental setup, optimization, and calibration. Next, development of fragmentation table and characterization of ionization efficiency are documented. Finally, results of applying this technique to analyze real-world ambient samples are presented. The TD-MS technique is validated by comparing ion chromatography and thermal/optical carbon analyses for wintertime samples collected at Fresno, CA from December 2000 to February 2001.
Book Synopsis Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry for Stable Isotope Metabolic Tracer Studies of Living Systems by :
Download or read book Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry for Stable Isotope Metabolic Tracer Studies of Living Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation focuses on the development of methods for stable isotope metabolic tracer studies in living systems using inductively coupled plasma single and dual quadrupole mass spectrometers. Sub-nanogram per gram levels of molybdenum (Mo) from human blood plasma are isolated by the use of anion exchange alumina microcolumns. Million-fold more concentrated spectral and matrix interferences such as sodium, chloride, sulfate, phosphate, etc. in the blood constituents are removed from the analyte. The recovery of Mo from the alumina column is 82[+-] 5% (n= 5). Isotope dilution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ID-ICP-MS) is utilized for the quantitative ultra-trace concentration determination of Mo in bovine and human blood samples. The average Mo concentration in reference bovine serum determined by this method is 10.2[+-] 0.4 ng/g, while the certified value is 11.5[+-] 1.1 ng/g (95% confidence interval). The Mo concentration of one pool of human blood plasma from two healthy male donors is 0.5[+-] 0.1 ng/g. The inductively coupled plasma twin quadrupole mass spectrometer (ICP-TQMS) is used to measure the carbon isotope ratio from non-volatile organic compounds and bio-organic molecules to assess the ability as an alternative analytical method to gas chromatography combustion isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GC-combustion-IRMS). Trytophan, myoglobin, and[beta]-cyclodextrin are chosen for the study, initial observation of spectral interference of[sup 13]C[sup+] with[sup 12]C[sup 1]H[sup+] comes from the incomplete dissociation of myoglobin and/or[beta]-cyclodextrin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) is the analytical tool of choice for the exact identification of unknown organic chemicals in environmental samples. Capillary gas chromatography, combined with the specific identification capabilities of mass spectrometry, allows the rapid and complete characterization of individual compounds in complex mixtures. As the technology has developed, many manufacturers have offered bench-top MS systems that provide a variety of analytical capabilities. Many instruments have been promoted as ''detectors for gas chromatography.'' More recently, manufacturers have offered integrated packages that can be transported to the field to provide analytical capabilities previously available only in the laboratory. The demonstrated field utility of these field-transportable units has triggered an interest in smaller, lighter weight, and more portable instruments. However, the current weight (>100 lb), large size, and laboratory-based power consumption requirements of these units is viewed as a liability by some potential field instrument users. Over the past several years, the interest in field-deployable instruments has resulted in research and development into smaller GC-MS systems designed with limited applications. While the development of these instruments is certainly worthwhile, a reliable and robust GC-MS instrument that clearly addresses the field-deployable needs for all environmental sampling and analysis would have considerable utility. We have developed portable instruments with analytical performance characteristics similar to those obtained with bench-top instruments. The current instrument, developed at LLNL and described here, was originally designed for use by on-site inspection teams supporting the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC). The portability and expanded capabilities of this integrated instrument now make it a useful tool for environmental monitoring and on-site analysis studies.
