Book excerpt: Appendix 2: Köppen Climate Classification of the eBook Understanding Physical Geography. This eBook was written for students taking introductory Physical Geography taught at a college or university. For the chapters currently available on Google Play presentation slides (Powerpoint and Keynote format) and multiple choice test banks are available for Professors using my eBook in the classroom. Please contact me via email at [email protected] if you would like to have access to these resources. The various chapters of the Google Play version of Understanding Physical Geography are FREE for individual use in a non-classroom environment. This has been done to support life long learning. However, the content of Understanding Physical Geography is NOT FREE for use in college and university courses in countries that have a per capita GDP over $25,000 (US dollars) per year where more than three chapters are being used in the teaching of a course. More specifically, for university and college instructors using this work in such wealthier countries, in a credit-based course where a tuition fee is accessed, students should be instructed to purchase the paid version of this content on Google Play which is organized as one of six Parts (organized chapters). One exception to this request is a situation where a student is experiencing financial hardship. In this case, the student should use the individual chapters which are available from Google Play for free. The cost of these Parts works out to only $0.99 per chapter in USA dollars, a very small fee for my work. When the entire textbook (30 chapters) is finished its cost will be only $29.70 in USA dollars. This is far less expensive than similar textbooks from major academic publishing companies whose eBook are around $50.00 to $90.00. Further, revenue generated from the sale of this academic textbook will provide “the carrot” to entice me to continue working hard creating new and updated content. Chapters: Alpine climate, Boreal ecosystem, Continental climate, Desert climate, Humid continental climate, Humid subtropical climate, Ice cap climate, Koppen climate classification, Mediterranean climate, Oceanic climate, Semi-arid climate, Subarctic climate, Taiga, Tropical monsoon climate, Tropical rainforest climate, Tropical savanna climate, Wladimir Koppen. Excerpt: The Koppen climate classification is one of the most widely used climate classification systems. It was first published by Russian German climatologist Wladimir Koppen in 1884, with several later modifications by Koppen himself, notably in 1918 and 1936. Later, German climatologist Rudolf Geiger collaborated with Koppen on changes to the classification system, which is thus sometimes referred to as the Koppen-Geiger climate classification system. The system is based on the concept that native vegetation is the best expression of climate. Thus, climate zone boundaries have been selected with vegetation distribution in mind. It combines average annual and monthly temperatures and precipitation, and the seasonality of precipitation. The Koppen climate classification scheme divides climates into five main groups, each having several types and subtypes. Each particular climate type is represented by a 2 to 4 letter symbol. Tropical climates are characterized by constant high temperature (at sea level and low elevations) - all twelve months of the year have average temperatures of or higher. They are subdivided as follows: Some of the places that have this climate are indeed uniformly and monotonously wet throughout the year (e.g., the northwest Pacific coast of South and Central America, from Ecuador to Costa Rica, see for instance, Andagoya, Colombia), but in many cases the period of higher sun and longer days is distinctly wettest (as at Palembang, ..."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This primary text, designed for undergraduate courses, provides a modern approach to the fundamentals of physical geography by linking process, form, and effect. The authors explore the natural world as a series of systems and consider the relationship between the different components of each. They examine, in turn, the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere, providing a thorough discussion of their composition and the ways in which their interaction forms our global environment. Throughout, the authors demonstrate the role of humanity in influencing the physical environment and the ways in which we are affected by our surroundings. Clearly written and lavishly illustrated with maps, drawings, photographs, and charts, Fundamentals of Physical Geography is an ideal text.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years more cultural institutions in hot and humid climates have been installing air-conditioning systems to protect their collections and provide comfort for both employees and visitors. This practice, however, can pose complications, including problems of installation and maintenance as well as structural damage to buildings, while failing to provide collections with a viable conservation environment. This volume offers hands-on guidance to the specific challenges involved in conserving cultural heritage in hot and humid climates. Initial chapters present scientific and geographic overviews of these climates, outline risk-based classifications for environmental control, and discuss related issues of human health and comfort. The authors then describe climate management strategies that offer effective and reliable alternatives to conventional air-conditioning systems and that require minimal intervention to the historic fabric of buildings that house collections. The book concludes with seven case studies of successful climate improvement projects undertaken by the Getty Conservation Institute in collaboration with cultural institutions around the world. Appendixes include a unit conversion table, a glossary, and a full bibliography. This book is an essential tool for cultural heritage conservators and museum curators, as well as other professionals involved in the design, construction, and maintenance of museums and other buildings housing cultural heritage collections in hot and humid climates. “It is absolutely right that conservation be in step with the socio-political context surrounding environmentally sound approaches. This text does that, and does it well. The authors have, admirably, been awarded the 2016 Prose Award for Environmental Science, and they are to be congratulated for producing a text that is seen as having an impact outside of the conservation sphere. The technical theory that underpins the text is accessible, and the solutions borne out through the case studies do present as being admirably pragmatic.”— Journal of the Institute of Conservation

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil science is perhaps one of the oldest practical sciences, having been of concern to man probably from the time he progressed from a strictly preda tory life to one in which agriculture became important. In view of the anti quity of concern with the subject, it is perhaps surprising that it can be approached from a fresh viewpoint, as is done in this book. Because soil science is an applied science, it is not surprising that the approach is usually descriptive, rather than imaginative. For agriculturalists and other land users, perhaps the most important part of soil science is the description of soils and the capacities of such soils to maintain crops, and this is reflected by the fact that soil science is usually treated ima highly descriptive manner, with soil classification being one of the main efforts. The treatment of the subject from a geological point of view, with considerable emphasis on the evolution of soils and the reasons governing their composition and form, makes this a highly readable book. Books on soil science are timely, with present-day concern with such major problems as the pollution of our environment and the possibility of overreaching our capacity for producing food for an expanding population.
