Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate the perceptions of high school athletic administrators and coaches of the impact of supervision on athletic coaches. This qualitative study investigated the perceptions of eight high school athletic administrators and twenty-three high school athletic coaches. Through the use of constructed response and open-ended survey questions, the study identified (1) how high school athletic administrators (athletic directors) and coaches perceived the administrative supervision process of athletic coaches; (2) the perceptions of athletic administrators and coaches on the potential impact of the administrative supervision process on athletic coaches; and (3) the perceptions of high school athletic administrators and coaches on what the ideal supervision model should look like for high school athletic coaches. Individual interviews with five participants from each group provided additional information that directly related to the research question. While not a comparative study between the two groups, areas of agreement and disagreement were revealed. Results showed that both administrators and coaches found administrators to be effective mentors and leaders. Significant congruence existed on the value of face-to-face conversations between the two parties resulting in a positive influence on coaches, as well as a similarity in their answers to the topic of the need for additional professional development. A clear discrepancy existed on the presence and effectiveness of a formal evaluation process of coaches by administrators. Additional open-ended questions confirmed that the perceptions of the administrators and athletic coaches differed slightly about the overall impact of the current supervision process. The study supports promotion of the importance of extra-curricular athletics and the implementation of positive change in the administrative supervision of those programs.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: The purpose of this study was to discover the relationship between principals experiences and athletic directors experiences related to selected athletic department tasks. The overarching research question was: To what extent do principals responses and athletic directors responses differ concerning athletic department tasks? This question was investigated by comparing the priority given to each task by the principals and the athletic directors; by evaluating the rank order of each task as given by each group; by contrasting the differences in the start date as indicated for each task by the principals and athletic directors; and by viewing, side-by-side, the number of days allocated for each task by each group. The population for this study was the principals and athletic directors of the 402 schools in the Georgia High School Association (GHSA). A purposive random sample of 100 principals and the athletic directors who work with those principals was selected from the GHSA member schools. A researcher created survey was mailed to the sample group. Analysis of the data showed a significant difference for two survey items in the area of priority: scheduling referees and creating eligibility lists. There was no significant difference between the responses for the amount of time allocated to the tasks. One cause for the lack of significance between the two sets of responses could be that 68% of the principals who participated in the study had coaching experience. Recommendations were made in the areas of practice, preparation, and potential studies. Concerning practice, principals might find the results of this study useful in evaluating and in mentoring athletic directors. Athletic directors, on the other hand, could use the findings to accomplish tasks on time and to train aspiring athletic directors. Principal preparation programs might do well to include exposure to the athletic program in school management courses. Principals and athletic directors from other regions of the country could be interviewed to see if any significant differences exist between their experiences. The Guide to Athletic Department Task Management was created from the responses given by the athletic directors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work is a report on the positive impact of parental involvement on their child's academics and on the school at large. Building Parent Engagement in Schools is an introduction to educators, particularly in lower-income and urban schools, who want to promote increased parental engagement in both the classroom and at home—an effort required by provisions of the No Child Left Behind Act of 2001. It is both an authoritative review of research that confirms the positive impact of parental involvement on student achievement and a guide for implementing proven strategies for increasing that involvement. With Building Parent Engagement in Schools, educators can start to develop a hybrid culture between home and school, so that school can serve as a cultural bridge for the students. Filled with the voices of real educators, students, and parents, the book documents a number of parent-involved efforts to improve low-income communities, gain greater resources for schools, and improve academic achievement. Coverage includes details of real initiatives in action, including programs for home visits, innovative uses of technology, joint enterprises like school/community gardens, and community organization efforts.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the best efforts of educators, our nation's schools are dangerously obsolete. Instead of teaching students to be critical thinkers and problem-solvers, we are asking them to memorize facts for multiple choice tests. This problem isn't limited to low-income school districts: even our top schools aren't teaching or testing the skills that matter most in the global knowledge economy. Our teens leave school equipped to work only in the kinds of jobs that are fast disappearing from the American economy. Meanwhile, young adults in India and China are competing with our students for the most sought-after careers around the world. Education expert Tony Wagner has conducted scores of interviews with business leaders and observed hundreds of classes in some of the nation's most highly regarded public schools. He discovered a profound disconnect between what potential employers are looking for in young people today (critical thinking skills, creativity, and effective communication) and what our schools are providing (passive learning environments and uninspired lesson plans that focus on test preparation and reward memorization). He explains how every American can work to overhaul our education system, and he shows us examples of dramatically different schools that teach all students new skills. In addition, through interviews with college graduates and people who work with them, Wagner discovers how teachers, parents, and employers can motivate the &"net"; generation to excellence. An education manifesto for the twenty-first century, The Global Achievement Gap is provocative and inspiring. It is essential reading for parents, educators, business leaders, policy-makers, and anyone interested in seeing our young people succeed as employees and citizens.
