Download or read book Anti-Proverbs in Five Languages written by Anna T. Litovkina and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-01-11 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the first comparative study of English, German, French, Russian and Hungarian anti-proverbs based on well-known proverbs. Proverbs are by no means fossilized texts but are adaptable to different times and changed values. While anti-proverbs can be considered as variants of older proverbs, they can also become new proverbs reflecting a more modern worldview. Anti-proverbs are therefore a lingo-cultural phenomenon that deserves the attention of cultural and literary historians, folklorists, linguists, and general readers interested in language and wordplay.

The chapters contribute, from a Cognitive Linguistics interdisciplinary perspective, to the existing body of literature on the proverb. The book begins with a first part containing three chapters concerned with theoretical discussions of proverbs in cognition and culture. The three chapters in the second part ponder proverbs within a cognitive-cross-cultural perspective. The third part of the volume includes three chapters that deal with the proverbs of individual languages and cultures. The three chapters in the fourth part study proverbs and/or related phenomena from a cognitive and cultural perspective: snowclones, idioms, and proverbial phrases. This book will be of interest to academics interested in proverbs within a cognitive linguistic framework and to scholars in the areas of language studies, applied linguistics, language teaching and learning, and Cognitive Linguistics in general, and to those researchers who wish to refine their knowledge about the cognitive activities featuring proverb use and their interaction with sociocultural contextual variables.
Book Synopsis Proverbs Are Never Neutral by : Marina Yu. Kotova
Download or read book Proverbs Are Never Neutral written by Marina Yu. Kotova and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-12-29 with total page 253 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines how proverbs can carry ethnonyms and contradictory oppositions in everyday speech, and interrogates the belief that such nuances are national in nature by comparing across languages and cultures. The authors bring together linguistic terms and typologies from Slavonic, Germanic, Romance, Finno-Ugric and Somali proverbs (with their English parallels) to enrich contrastive paremiology. The book pushes the thematic boundaries of the paremiological minima of languages by drawing on fields including sociolinguistics, and it will be of interest to students and scholars of cultural linguistics, comparative cultural studies, sociolinguistics, social identity, anthropology, cognitive semiotics, and the history of words and concepts.

It also depicts those who contribute to the institution of marriage (that is, husbands and wives), and analyses their nature, qualities, attributes and behaviours as revealed through such anti-proverbs. In addition, the text investigates those who remain single and do not belong to the institution of marriage, but contribute to the institution of marriage. It will appeal to a wide range of readers, from the casually interested general reader to the paremiologist, paremiographer, lexicographer, and anthropologist.
Download or read book Twisted Wisdom written by Wolfgang Mieder and published by DeProverbio.com. This book was released on 2002 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book of parodied proverbs represents the first collection of such twisted or anti-proverbs in the English language. It contains over 3,000 texts based on 320 traditional Anglo-American proverbs. The twisted proverbs were located in dozens of books and articles on puns, one-liners, toasts, quotations, aphorisms, and graffiti. Many examples are also based on advertisements, caricatures, cartoons, comic strips, and headlines from magazines and newspapers. About 75 illustrations from the mass media are also included. While many of these humorous texts are based on mere puns and wordplay, there are also numerous satirical anti-proverbs that contain revealing social comments: Eat, drink and be merry for tomorrow they may recall your credit card. Marry in haste, and pay alimony at leisure. Taste makes waist. A split personality is the only case where two can live as cheaply as one. All work and no play makes you a valued employee. Where there's a will there's a loophole. The lawyer agrees with the doctor that the best things in life are fees. A condom is the mother of all prevention. Do unto others before they do unto you. Take care of your character and your reputation will take care of itself. If at first you don't succeed, you are fired.

Book Synopsis European Proverbs in 55 Languages with Equivalents in Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, Chinese and Japanese by : Gyula Paczolay

This book was released on 2017-05-19 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The publication of European Proverbs must be considered a major event in paremiographical research, and the book most certainly belongs in every research library of the world and on the shelf of any scholar interested in the comparative study of proverbs. It is a standard reference work on the very day of its appeareance, and it will serve generations of scholars and students as the work on the most common proverbs known throughout Europe. The Hungarian scholar Gyula Paczolay and his classical European Proverbs are a major milestone in the historical development of paremiography, while at the same time setting new scholarly standards for future paremiographical work. ... After years of work by Gyula Paczolay it is now possible to see at one glance that "There is no smoke without fire" (no. 1) is the most widely distributed proverb in Europe. For this proverb Paczolay lists texts from 54 of the 55 languages represented in this book. The only language missing is Georgian. As is the case with the other entries, Paczolay starts with a general English lemma for this proverb: (There is) no smoke without (some) fire. This is followed by variants and a short semantic explanation of the basic proverb in English. Then comes the impressive list of foreign language texts in alphabetical order of the individual languages but starting with the early Latin version. Where possible, dates of first occurrence are cited, and precise bibliographical information is included for each text. Even two Esperanto texts are cited at the end of this rich documentation. That is followed by Oriental equivalents from the Arabic, Persian, Sanskrit, Uigur, Chinese and Japanese languages. A summary of the various historical dates, the language not represented, and detailed bibliographical information concludes this inclusive presentation of the most common European proverb. This superb pattern of documentation is repeated for the other proverbs...

Download or read book "Proverbs Speak Louder Than Words" written by Wolfgang Mieder and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2008 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book presents a composite picture of the richness of proverbs as significant expressions of folk wisdom as is manifest from their appearance in art, culture, folklore, history, literature, and the mass media. The book draws attention to the fact that proverbs as metaphorical signs continue to play an important role in oral and written communication. Proverbs as so-called monumenta humana are omnipresent in all facets of life, and while they are neither sacrosanct nor saccharine, they usually offer much common sense or wisdom based on recurrent experiences and observations."--BOOK JACKET.
