Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Despite the central role anionic species have been shown to play in both mineralogical and biological processes, until now there have been no comprehensive references dealing exclusively with anionic coordination chemistry. Written by a group comprising pioneering researchers from the United States and Europe, Supramolecular Chemistry of Anions covers all theoretical and practical aspects of anion complexation, from thermodynamics and structure to catalysis and various applications. The authors begin with the 1967 discovery of halide inclusion by bicyclic diammonium receptors and trace the development of anion coordination chemistry through the most recent developments in the field. Topics covered in detail include: * Pre-supramolecular anion chemistry * Natural and artificial molecules that can act as anion receptors * Preorganization and chemical design * Structural, thermodynamic, electrochemical, and photochemical aspects of anion coordination * Computer methods for receptor design and multiple host-guest relations * Anion receptor catalysis and molecular recognition and transformation of nucleotides Supramolecular Chemistry of Anions is a valuable professional resource for organic and inorganic chemists, analytical chemists, biotechnologists, pharmaceutical scientists, and environmental chemists. It also serves as an excellent graduate-level text for students of molecular recognition, catalysis, and biomimetic chemistry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anion recognition plays a critical role in a range of biological processes, and a variety of receptors and carriers can be found throughout the natural world. Chemists working in the area of supramolecular chemistry have created a range of anion receptors, drawing inspiration from nature as well as their own inventive processes. This book traces the origins of anion recognition chemistry as a unique sub-field in supramolecular chemistry while illustrating the basic approaches currently being used to effect receptor design. The combination of biological overview and summary of current synthetic approaches provides a coverage that is both comprehensive and comprehensible. First, the authors detail the key design motifs that have been used to generate synthetic receptors and which are likely to provide the basis for further developments. They also highlight briefly some of the features that are present in naturally occurring anion recognition and transport systems and summarise the applications of anion recognition chemistry. Providing as it does a detailed review for practitioners in the field and a concise introduction to the topic for newcomers, Anion Receptor Chemistry reflects the current state of the art. Fully referenced and illustrated in colour, it is a welcome addition to the literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the heart of coordination chemistry lies the coordinate bond, in its simplest sense arising from donation of a pair of electrons from a donor atom to an empty orbital on a central metalloid or metal. Metals overwhelmingly exist as their cations, but these are rarely met ‘naked’ – they are clothed in an array of other atoms, molecules or ions that involve coordinate covalent bonds (hence the name coordination compounds). These metal ion complexes are ubiquitous in nature, and are central to an array of natural and synthetic reactions. Written in a highly readable, descriptive and accessible style Introduction to Coordination Chemistry describes properties of coordination compounds such as colour, magnetism and reactivity as well as the logic in their assembly and nomenclature. It is illustrated with many examples of the importance of coordination chemistry in real life, and includes extensive references and a bibliography. Introduction to Coordination Chemistry is a comprehensive and insightful discussion of one of the primary fields of study in Inorganic Chemistry for both undergraduate and non-specialist readers.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: GEORGE CHRISTOU Indiana University, Bloomington I am no doubt representative of a large number of current inorganic chemists in having obtained my undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the 1970s. It was during this period that I began my continuing love affair with this subject, and the fact that it happened while I was a student in an organic laboratory is beside the point. I was always enchanted by the more physical aspects of inorganic chemistry; while being captivated from an early stage by the synthetic side, and the measure of creation with a small c that it entails, I nevertheless found the application of various theoretical, spectroscopic and physicochemical techniques to inorganic compounds to be fascinating, stimulating, educational and downright exciting. The various bonding theories, for example, and their use to explain or interpret spectroscopic observations were more or less universally accepted as belonging within the realm of inorganic chemistry, and textbooks of the day had whole sections on bonding theories, magnetism, kinetics, electron-transfer mechanisms and so on. However, things changed, and subsequent inorganic chemistry teaching texts tended to emphasize the more synthetic and descriptive side of the field. There are a number of reasons for this, and they no doubt include the rise of diamagnetic organometallic chemistry as the dominant subdiscipline within inorganic chemistry and its relative narrowness vis-d-vis physical methods required for its prosecution.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although coordination chemistry naturally centers on the synthesis of coordination compounds, the synthesis of these materials is typically not an end in itself. Coordination compounds are utilized in all branches of chemistry; from theoretical modeling to industrial and consumer products. While a large amount of information is available on coordination chemistry in general and synthetic methods in particular, no comprehensive work has been presented on the preparation of coordination compounds with an emphasis on synthetic strategies rather than on detailed descriptions of specific syntheses. The goal of this book is to provide an approach to coordination chemistry that is based upon preparative strategies. The main aim of the authors is to present a systematic classification of synthetic reactions rather than an encyclopedic listing of experimental results. Hence, the coverage is more selective than exhaustive. Despite this, the book provides access to the original literature with ca. 2000 references. The edition is well-illustrated and contains almost 250 schemes, figures and illustrations of crystal structures of selected complexes.

Book excerpt: Metal complexes play important roles as catalysts or other participants in synthetic and biological reactions. Substrates and sometimes attacking reagents also are activated through coordination with metal atoms or ions. In these events the natures not only of the central metals but also of ancillary ligands exert important influences on the stability and reactivity of the coordinated substrates. A ligand in general can adopt various coordination modes depending on its chemical environment, thus functioning as a probe. The number of coordination modes increases with increasing complexity of the ligand. In this book it is shown that even the simplest mono- and diatomic ligands such as H, CO, and N2 exhibit a variety of coordination modes, which are related to their reactions. The thiocyanate anion is taken up as a representative of the triatomic ambidentate ligands, and factors influencing the preferences for N- und S-bonding are summarized. Coordination chemistry of ß-dicarbonyl compounds is a highlight of this book. Acetylacetone, one of the most familiar Werner ligands, is shown to favor -carbon and n-allylic bonding in many instances. Its versatile behaviour in changing coordination modes is revealed.
