Book excerpt: Written by the renowned Swiss naturalist Louis Agassiz, this book presents a detailed analysis of the principles underlying the classification of animals. It proposes a new system of classification based on the study of embryology and anatomy, and offers insights into the relationships between different groups of animals. This classic work of natural history is still widely read and admired by scholars and students of biology. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. This work is in the "public domain in the United States of America, and possibly other nations. Book excerpt: Concepts of Biology is designed for the single-semester introduction to biology course for non-science majors, which for many students is their only college-level science course. As such, this course represents an important opportunity for students to develop the necessary knowledge, tools, and skills to make informed decisions as they continue with their lives. Rather than being mired down with facts and vocabulary, the typical non-science major student needs information presented in a way that is easy to read and understand. Even more importantly, the content should be meaningful. Students do much better when they understand why biology is relevant to their everyday lives. For these reasons, Concepts of Biology is grounded on an evolutionary basis and includes exciting features that highlight careers in the biological sciences and everyday applications of the concepts at hand.We also strive to show the interconnectedness of topics within this extremely broad discipline. In order to meet the needs of today's instructors and students, we maintain the overall organization and coverage found in most syllabi for this course. A strength of Concepts of Biology is that instructors can customize the book, adapting it to the approach that works best in their classroom. Concepts of Biology also includes an innovative art program that incorporates critical thinking and clicker questions to help students understand--and apply--key concepts.

Book excerpt: "In preparing this work for the public, the writer was chiefly influenced by a desire to collect the truths of Zoology within a small compass, and to render them more intelligible, by a systematical arrangement. He is not aware that there exists any work in the English language, in which the subject, in its different bearings, has been illustrated in a philosophical manner, or to which a student of Zoology could be referred, as a suitable introduction to the science. There are not wanting, it is true, many disquisitions of great value, on particular departments of the physiology and classification of Animals. But the writings of these naturalists, and others which have been noticed in the body of the work, are not only rare, but expensive; so that the task of investigating the facts which have been established, or the theories which have been proposed, can scarcely, in ordinary circumstances, be entered upon. The want, indeed, of such an introduction to the study of the Animal Kingdom, as should serve as an index to the doctrines on which the classification is founded, has frequently been the subject of regret, and may probably be considered as the origin of that indifference to the science which is but too apparent in this country. This work aims to provide such an introduction by providing a view of the structure, functions, and classification of animals"--Preface.

Book excerpt: The study of the animal kingdom that comprises of an analysis of the structure, evolution, embryology, classification, habits and distribution of animals is under the scope of animal biology or zoology. It incorporates the disciplines of comparative anatomy, animal physiology, taxonomy, zoography, vertebrate and invertebrate zoology, etc. Animals are classified into distinct groups based on shared characteristics. The branch of science concerned with the identification, description, nomenclature and classification of animals is known as taxonomy. Anatomy deals with the structural organization of all animals. The focus of physiology is to understand how the different structures of the organism such as cells, biomolecules, organs and organ systems execute the various physical and chemical functions essential to the organism. This book provides comprehensive insights into the field of animal biology. It unfolds the innovative aspects of the study of taxonomy, anatomy and physiology, which will be crucial for the progress of this field in the future. It will serve as a valuable source of reference for graduate and post graduate students as well as experts.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Principles of Classification in the Animal Kingdom: On the Structure of the Halcyonoid Polypi; On the Morphology of the Medusae The time has, however, gone by, when the mere translation of family names, or of more general or minor divisions, into another language, could be presented as a new system, and the raising of a secondary division into the rank of a primary group, or the lowering of a primary division into a subordinate position, constituted an improvement in the knowledge of the natural relations of animals. Nothing short of a material addition to the information we possess respecting any group of animals, can now be considered as a real advance in Zoology. Book excerpt: THE CLASSIFICATION OF ANIMALS is Still Very much a field in which discovery and revision are continuing, even after two hundred years of study. The importance of classification in biology increases every year, because the experimental and practical fields find increasing need for accurate identification of animals and for understanding of comparative relationships. At least one outstanding biologist has opposed pubUcation of this new classification on the ground that it would be accepted as final, the classification, and would tend to make students think that all higher classification is finished. The intention of the compiler is just the opposite. Just as this classification is different in detail from all previous ones, so will future editions be still different, as we learn more about the comparative features of animals. It is anticipated that every new edition will spur students of the individual groups to propose improvements. It is therefore planned to issue corrected editions whenever appropriate. The very appearance of these subsequent editions will emphasize the growth of understanding of animal groups. Only one ostensibly complete classification of animals, living and fossil, has been published in recent years. That classification, by A. S. Pearse of Duke University, is a good one, based on the views of many specialists. Certain mechanical faults make it less usable than it should be, and the need for revision gave the original impetus to preparation of the present classification. Because Pearse did not usually indicate the source of his arrangements, he is not here cited as an authority. Nevertheless, the two classifications are basically very similar. No other single classification has been found that agrees so closely with the conclusions of the present study. It should be emphasized that, within certain limits, this classification is not a simple compilation of the views of specific workers. In nearly all details, choices have been made between conflicting schemes of various authors, not on the basis of the reputation of those authors but on my judgment of the soundness of their supporting arguments or on my analysis of the data they present. In none of the larger groups has the work of any single author been accepted without modification. Several considerations have influenced the decisions embodied in this classification. First, a false picture is given by a simplified classification, because the existing diversity is one of the principal features of the animal kingdom. Therefore, no groups should be combined merely for the sake of simplicity. Second, although the previous item would seem to require coverage of the groupings at all possible levels, to show the extreme range of division and subdivision, this is not in fact possible. Not only are there many conflicting groupings at certain levels, such as of phyla or orders, but there is no practical way to show these groupings in a general classification. It is a compromise that is believed to be effective to subdivide the phyla only into classes, subclasses, and orders. Other possible groupings, such as subphyla and superorders are referred to in the notes. Third, two groups which are so distinct at any level that they cannot be described in common terms must be separated at that level. (For example, Pterobranchia and Enteropneusta; see the Notes on the Taxa.) Fourth, groups which cannot be distinguished at any particular level by the type of characters used for their neighbors must be combined at that level. (For example, the sometime classes of Nematoda...
