Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years infectious livestock diseases have swept across many countries, often with dramatic consequences for animal and public health. With climatic changes modifying the distribution of vector-born diseases, emerging novel pathogens can spread rapidly in new areas, at the same time as resistance spreads in places where they are established. This calls for new approaches for the control of parasitic diseases. These two volumes present in detail over 130 viral, bacterial, fungal and parasitic diseases of large livestock species from all over the world, accompanied by very valuable and informative illustrations and photographs. Particular attention is also paid to the role of wildlife in their epidemiology, stressing the potential zoonotic characteristics of diseases where applicable and their effects on humans.

The book first offers information on parasitology, including zooparasites of livestock (protozoans, worms, insects, and arachnids) and bacteriology and virology, including pathogenic fungi. The text also elaborates on other diseases comprised of a number of conditions (organic, nutritional, metabolic, and infectious) that must be treated separately. The sections are alphabetically arranged by subsections according to the Latin name of the causal agent or the condition. The entries in the parasitology section are divided into two parts, and both parts will not be always be complete for all the five languages provided. The manuscript also provides alphabetical indexes to the six languages used. The book is a dependable source of data for readers interested in parasites and diseases in livestock.

In the first review devoted to parasites of domestic cattle and sheep alone, this book provides in-depth, focused advice which can be tailored to individual farms. It considers the impact of parasites, both as individual species and as co-infections, as well as epidemiological information, monitoring, and diagnostic procedures. Supported throughout by diagrams and photos to aid diagnosis, it also reviews the basis for control measures such as the responsible use of parasiticides, adaptive animal husbandry and other management practices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Authors from several countries have contributed to this assembly of 19 scientific papers in which important complex influences of weather and climate on the distribution and prevalence of animal parasites are discussed. Subjects include: helminth parasites which cause animal diseases such as fascioliasis, nematodiriasis and parasitic gastro-enteritis; cestodes; ticks and other arthropod ectoparasites, including mosquitoes. Extensive bibliographies have been compiled for each topic. In each case, known effects of weather and climate on the ecology of the parasite are reviewed and, where appropriate, field and laboratory investigations into weather/parasite relationships are described. It is pointed out that standard weather observations can often be correlated with meteorological conditions at or near the ground and that parasite activity at surface level can thus be related to readily-available meteorological data. The development of weather/parasite models based on these relationships is described and discussed. Disease-forecasting systems already in operation using meteorological data are also discussed in detail; in the case of some such systems much progress in reported while in others the lack of relevant meteorological and/or biological data has reduced their potential usefulness. The Technical Note has six parts: Part I deals with weather and fascioliasis, Part II with weather and nematodes, Part III with weather and cestodes, Parts IV and V with weather and arthropod parasites and Part IV gives guidance in the use of meteorological and biological data in the establishment of disease/weather relationships.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an in-depth yet concise overview of the most common and emerging protozoa that cause diseases in both farm animals and companion animals. As outlined in the concise introduction, pathogenic protozoans represent an evolutionary highly diverse and little understood group of disease-causing microorganisms. For each of the featured parasitic unicellular eukaryotes, it discusses the morphology, lifecycle, epidemiology and host-pathogen interactions. In addition, the book highlights the latest developments in diagnostic methods, as well as prevention and treatment strategies. Thorough information on genomes and genetic manipulation strategies for some of the protozoa covered in this book is also included. Infections involving parasitic protozoa can cause productivity losses and/or reduce the quality of life of infected animals. Some infections are zoonotic, posing an on-going public health threat. In most cases, prevention and treatment are either non-existent or need considerable improvement. On the other hand, a great deal of research has recently been conducted on these organisms, yielding valuable new information on their global distribution and revealing the mechanisms of host-pathogen interactions at the molecular level – and essential insights that can be used for the development of new control tools. This book includes extensive information on both basic aspects and recent scientific discoveries on these protozoa and thus constitutes a unique resource for students, veterinarians, and researchers alike.
