Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written entirely in German, this class-tested, content-based text helps intermediate-level German students to communicate meaningfully in interpersonal, interpretive, and presentational modes. With a stimulating, comparative focus on topics such as contemporary politics, the environment, history, film, music, fine art, literature, and technology, the text encourages creative self-expression as well as critical thinking about the German language and contemporary cultures of the German-speaking world. Anders gedacht engages students in the learning process through inductive grammar instruction and review; cultural interpretation; analysis and comparison with students' own culture; and interactive, task-based practice. A complete review and expansion of German grammar, along with correlated grammar and vocabulary practice, is located in the workbook and referenced in textbook chapters. Numerous task-based activities—designed for individual, pair, group, or whole-class work—reinforce chapter topics while fostering verbal and written communication and personal expression. Some activities include speaking-strategy instruction that provides techniques to help students build their speaking skills in areas such as persuasion, exposition, and description. Students listen to and think critically about a variety of authentic recordings, including music, a fairy tale, an excerpt from a novel, an interview with a contemporary German author, excerpts from a speech given by a Swiss politician, and several film soundtracks. Reading strategies encourage students to implement techniques that will make them more successful readers and prepare them for advanced German study. Writing practice—including biographical sketches; film-plot summaries; personal and public narratives; song lyrics; and argumentative, expository, and compare/contrast essays—appears throughout the text as free-form, personalized, and creative-writing assignments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Joar Haga traces the Lutheran doctrine of communicatio idiomatum, the exchange of properties between the natures of Christ, as it developed in some important controversies of the 16th and the early 17th Century. Regarding it as the nerve of his soteriology, Luther stressed the intimacy of the two natures in Christ to such a degree that it threatened to end the peaceful relationship between theology and philosophy. At the same time as the Wittenberg reformers broke with certain strains of their philosophical heritage, they would insist that the continuation of Christ's bodily presence was a reality in sacrament and nature (!), irreducible to a sign or to a memory. On the other hand, they did not want to be ignorant of the claims of reason. By rejecting the classic framework for a peaceful coexistence of philosophy and theology on the one hand, and insisting on Christ's bodily reality on the other, the quest for a new concept of how philosophy and theology related was implicitly stated.Earlier research identified two traditions of Lutheran Christology: One train of thought follows Luther in emphasising the difference between philosophy and theology. This can be seen in the Tübingen solutions where Johannes Brenz and Theodor Thumm are the most interesting thinkers. Another train of thought can be found in the conservative pupils of Melanchthon, where Martin Chemnitz and Balthasar Mentzer are the most prominent theologians. This research does not merely group the thinkers within the confines of a tradition, but underlines their individual contributions to an open-ended history.

Book excerpt: Bhutan is unique amongst the small group of nations in the Himalayas. It is peaceful and democratic. Above all, it emphasizes happiness that is not necessarily associated with possession of material goods. It protects the environment by eschewing mass tourism that could trample its fragile land. Bhutan is also known for creating the world's one and only Index of Happiness as a measure of wellbeing for its people, which it prefers over the more materialistic and widely used index of Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In 1990, the Bhutanese government invited Western scientists to conduct research in one of Bhutan's most remote villages. Bhutan is a country where spirituality is everywhere, where the logic of the animist/Buddhist religion ordains that life is experienced entirely in the present and where human gender is conceived of as part and parcel of the cosmos. The people of Bhutan identify this experience explicitly as “sustainability.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Herbartism in Austrian-Hungarian philosophy" is often an obligatory reference, but even if quoting Herbart and his school is frequent, reading them attentively is less evident. Because Herbartism reached its peak in the second half of the 19th century, and was effectively institutionalized as "official philosophy" of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, at least in Prague and Vienna, criticizing Herbartism often means discussing the "Austrian", "philosophical" and "institutional" criteria of the object under consideration. As the history of the Austrian tradition and theoretical reflections in this field expand, discussion of this tradition is becoming more and more tight and precise. The contributors in this volume recall the historical and conceptual importance of Herbartism in the field of Austrian philosophy, by addressing several aspects of his specific realism: philosophical, theoretical, pedagogical, psychological, and aesthetical.

Flach presents Kant’s conception of freedom as well as its potential for understanding what it means to be human. Krijnen presents Hegel’s conception of freedom and shows that Kant’s conception underestimates an essential feature of freedom. The contributions of other authors assess the results.
