Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Hebrew Stories and Their Modern Interpretation The purpose Oi this book is to examine some of the varied and interesting narratives of the Old Testament in the light of modern study, with a view to discovering their original significance and showing their relations to other parts of this great literature. It is quite natural in the atmosphere of our time that the most prominent and attractive feature should be the utterances of the great prophets, the oracles of the men who did so much to lift religion to a higher moral plane and make it a spiritual rather than a magical power. It is said that prophecy is the heart of the Old Testament, and that statement is true enough, if we remember that the heart, though a central and vital Organ, is related to all other parts of the body it receives the life-blood and sends it forth again in purer, stronger forms. We will find prophetic ideas in earlier stories just as we can trace the influence Of prophecy in later history and law. We are concerned with a movement which, when it once began, was continuous and all its parts were woven into a living whole. Book excerpt: This short story has called forth the highest praise from the most competent critics for its simple beautiful presentation of scenes from the rural life of ancient Israel. It is artistic in the noblest sense, though it is not likely that in those days there was much consciousness of art of discussion as to the technique of story-telling.-from "Ruth: A Woman's Faithfulness and Its Reward"With an emphasis on the Bible as literature, this classic 1922 work examines the stories of the Old Testament with a modern eye, exploring not only their religious and historical significance but their beauty and effectiveness as prose and as examples of the art of storytelling. Among the tales considered are: .The Creation of the World. The First Murder. The Tower of Babel. The Story of Jacob.Samson: or A Strong Man's Failure.Saul and the Witch of Endor. The Story of Job: The Problem of Suffering. The Story of Jonah: A Prophetic Satire.and more.Canadian scholar W. G. JORDAN was professor of Hebrew language and literature at Queen's University, Kingston. He also wrote Biblical Criticism and Modern Thought (1909).

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hebrew Tales: Selected and Translated From the Writings of the Ancient Hebrew Sages IN 1826 a little book appeared in London which immediately attracted attention. It was neatly printed, in splendid, large type, making it by far the most attractive output of the Jewish press of that period. Intrinsically, too, it represented the flowering of Hebrew literature in England. Indeed, no other Eng lish work on a Jewish subject, with the pos sible exception of Emanuel Deutsch's memor able essay on The Talmud - published ten decades later, in The Quarterly Review - was so favorably received. The Hebrew lore offers a rich and interesting field for supplementary reading. Its simplicity renders it desirable in very low grades as well as in grades more advanced. No attempt has been made to explain the meaning of any incident or to attach a moral to any story, but rather this has been-carefully avoided as a great error. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The story of ancient Israel, from the arrival in Canaan to the destruction of the Kingdom of Judah and the Babylonian exile some six centuries later, here is the highly anticipated second volume in Everett Fox’s landmark translation of the Hebrew Bible. The personalities who appear in the pages of The Early Prophets, and the political and moral dilemmas their stories illuminate, are part of the living consciousness of the Western world. From Joshua and the tumbling walls of Jericho to Samson and Delilah, the prophet Samuel and the tragic King Saul, David and Goliath, Bathsheba and Absalom, King Solomon’s temple, Elijah and the chariot of fire, Ahab and Jezebel—the stories of these men and women are deeply etched into Western culture because they beautifully encapsulate the human experience. The four books that comprise The Early Prophets look at tribal rivalries, dramatic changes in leadership, and the intrusions of neighboring empires through the prism of the divine-human relationship. Over the centuries, the faithful have read these narratives as demonstrations of the perils of disobeying God’s will, and time and again Jews in exile found that the stories spoke to their own situations of cultural assimilation, destruction, and the reformulation of identity. They have had an equally indelible impact on generations of Christians, who have seen in many of the narratives foreshadowings of the life and death of Jesus, as well as models for their own lives and the careers of their leaders. But beyond its importance as a foundational religious document, The Early Prophets is a great work of literature, a powerful and distinctive narrative of the past that seeks meaning in the midst of national catastrophe. Accompanied by illuminating commentary, notes, and maps, Everett Fox’s masterly translation of the Hebrew original re-creates the echoes, allusions, alliterations, and wordplays that rhetorically underscore its meaning and are intrinsic to a timeless text meant to be both studied and read aloud.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Early Hebrew Story: Its Historical Background These lectures deal, first, with the origin of the books in which these stories are contained. What is their date in their present form, how and when were they composed and from what source did the writers draw their material? Secondly: What is the nature of that material? How much of it is derived from foreign myths and legends, whether Babylonian or Canaanitic? How did the Hebrews come into possession of this material? Thirdly What peculiarly Hebrew material, if any, exists in these stories? How much of that material is his torical and in what sense? What evidence does it give, not only of the ancestry and political devel opment, but still more of the religion and religious development of the Hebrews in the early period? Fourthly: What is the religious value to us of the present day of these stories and the books in which they are contained? Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Myths of Israel, the Ancient Book of Genesis: With Analysis and Explanation of Its Composition Modern critical research into the sources and character of the ancient scriptures of the Hebrews leaves no reasonable doubt that the Book of Gen esis, which was used as an introduction to the old Jewish law, is a composite production made up largely of myths and fragments of myths em bodying the conceptions of the earliest writers of Israel, regarding the relations of that people to their deity. Study of it in this aspect gives it a new interest and significance, while persist ence in the old View of its origin and meaning is in danger of sinking it from reverence to de rision. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Jewish Scriptures: The Books of the Old Testament in the Light of Their Origin and History The purpose of this volume is to present the history and literature of the ancient Hebrews, as contained in the Old Testament, in a clear, concise, and candid way, accepting the benefit of the light revealed by modern research and learning, and applying the same calm judgment to which we are accustomed in dealing with the productions of other ancient peoples. The writer lays no claim to special erudition or to original research. With a keen interest in the subject and a studious searching of the Jewish Scriptures themselves in our English version, he has endeavored to absorb for his own enlightenment the results of the studies of the great scholars of Europe upon the subject during the last thirty years, and has tried to condense within the compass of one moderate volume the fruits of that endeavor. It has been sought to explain everything which meets the eye on the printed page, or to indicate where such explanation may be readily found. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tales and Customs of the Ancient Hebrews for Young Readers This little volume has grown out of the actual experience of a practical, earnest primary teacher, who sees the place history occupies in a course of study. It has been my pleasure to watch the development of the history notion in our schools for the past few years. While several topics have been worked out in the grades, the subject of this volume seems to be the most easily arranged for first year pupils. Miss Herbst, while herself thoroughly familiar with her subject, has submitted the manuscript to a careful Hebrew scholar, who has verified its statements. What she has so well done, others can also do. I commend the work to primary teachers, and bespeak for it a large place among such teachers.
