Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to understand 1) perceptions about transition services of special education teachers who work with students with intellectual disabilities (ID) and 2) dilemmas these teachers have encountered when implementing these services in Korea. I used Qualitative in-depth interviews for providing insight into the Korean special school teachers' perceptions of transition services, dilemmas they encountered in practice, and strategies for solving these dilemmas to improve their performance level for implementing transition services. As a results of this study, I found many challenges or barriers that keep special education teachers for students with ID from effectively implementing transition services. I have used the four dilemmas framework theorized by Windschitl (2010) to further examine why the implementation of transition services is lacking. In place of being critical of educators, it is important to provide them with an environment that allows them to work effectively. Active participation and cooperation by school administrators, parents, government organizations for people with disabilities, and legal services would be most helpful in providing an atmosphere in which special educators could ensure successful transition services for their students. This study also found that teachers had encountered other dilemmas that had not been categorized into the four dilemmas framework. In place of critiquing teachers' low levels of transition implementation, it would be more effective to provide professional development training for these educators and to prepare the educational and social infrastructure to enhance their implementation of transition services for students with ID.

Early class lessons provide an overview of research findings about the postschool outcomes of students with disabilities, and introduce the "Taxonomy" as a model for planning, implementing, and evaluating transition-focused education. Subsequent class lessons focus on content directly related to the model's five practice categories: (1) student-focused planning, (2) student development, (3) interagency collaboration, (4) family involvement, and (5) program structures. Each lesson features readings, discussion, and activities related to the specific practice category. Self-determination for students is stressed throughout the curriculum. Book excerpt: "Students with intellectual disability are mandated to have school-based transition planning to support them as they age into adulthood, and many school districts develop transition programs for students between ages 18 and 21. Both law and practice dictate that transition planning be done in collaboration with students and their families. However, culturally and linguistically diverse families may have differing values and beliefs than the school systems and staff that support their children. Such differences may indicate that transition programs are not adequately preparing students with intellectual disability for the lives they will live as adults. This study examines how schools can develop more culturally responsive transition programs in order to better serve culturally and linguistically diverse students, their families, and their communities. It uses a qualitative method using disparate focus groups of teachers, parents, and community members. Analysis of the focus groups utilizes Barry Johnson’s principles of Polarity Management to establish five polarity sets: Safety and Risk, Independence and Interdependence, Monoculture and Multiculture, Trust and Advocacy, and Expectation and Possibility. Findings support the hypothesis of incongruity between the transition goals of teachers and diverse families. Recommendations for developing culturally responsive transition programs are provided for various stakeholder groups"--Abstract.
