Book excerpt: All firms' value operational efficiency but few organizations excel at designing, communicating and managing their performance-improvement initiatives. The specific objectives of the study were to: identify the effect of management factors such as planning, organizing and leading, the contribution of communication, the effect of artisans' level of skills, and the influence of financial resources to operational efficiency as well as investigate the constraints faced by the entrepreneurs in their effort to achieve operational efficiency. The study used the questionnaire as the main tool for data collection. Findings reveal that management factors such as leadership, planning and organizing are some of the management aspects that are core in achieving operational efficiency in the apparel industries. Communication plays a key role in work places because an idea or procedure no matter how great, is useless until it is transmitted and understood by others. Financial resource availability is necessary in improving the working conditions, employing other factors that affect operational efficiency and in retaining committed employees. Artisan skill and experience was found to be of importance by the research in that it facilitated artisans to profitability as viewed by all the respondents. The research further revealed that most of the apparel industries do not operate efficiently because they are ignorant of the factors that affect operational efficiency and also they do not have financial resources that are necessary in employing these factors. The study recommends that improving operational efficiency should be one of the company's top objectives. Implementation of company-wide operational efficiency framework will enable organizations to drive consistency in direct management of its core business processes.

Book excerpt: Leadership Development explores how leaders gain and use self-knowledge for continuous improvement and career development and describes how leaders help themselves and the people with whom they work, understand themselves, and become more self-determined, continuous learners, and make the most of resources, such as feedback and coaching. This book explains why leaders need support for self-insight and professional growth in today's business environment. It explores dimensions of effective leadership in light of business, technological, and economic trends. Focusing on the importance of leaders developing accurate self-understanding, the book defines self-insight, outlines the meaning of internal strength and resilience for self-regulation, and considers how leaders attain a meaningful and realistic sense of self-identity. This volume illustrates ways organizations support these psychological processes. Leadership development is viewed as a comprehensive, continuous process that includes evaluating organizational needs and individual competencies, setting goals for career development and performance improvement, offering needed training and growth experiences, providing feedback, and tracking change in behavior and performance over time. It describes how leaders react to feedback and how 360-degree feedback survey methods and executive coaching help leaders attain and apply self-insight to enhance their performance. In addition, this book considers challenges and opportunities for leadership development, including how leaders overcome career barriers and become continuous learners.

The authors show managers how to use these tools to implement technology solutions that drive top performance. Special features of Managing the Demand-Supply Chain include: The best thinking from acknowledged leaders in the field An extended case study of Nokia's successful demand chain management implementation Numerous sidebars detailing real-world implementation issues Managing the Demand-Supply Chain is an indispensable resource for managers who want to optimize operational effectiveness, spur innovation, and achieve and sustain excellence in exceeding customer expectations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Human capital theory, or the notion that there is a direct relationship between educational investment and individual and national prosperity, has dominated public policy on education and labor for the past fifty years. In The Death of Human Capital?, Phillip Brown, Hugh Lauder, and Sin Yi Cheung argue that the human capital story is one of false promise: investing in learning isn't the road to higher earnings and national prosperity. Rather than abandoning human capital theory, however, the authors redefine human capital in an age of smart machines. They present a new human capital theory that rejects the view that automation and AI will result in the end of waged work, but see the fundamental problem as a lack of quality jobs offering interesting, worthwhile, and rewarding opportunities. A controversial challenge to the reigning ideology, The Death of Human Capital? connects with a growing sense that capitalism is in crisis, felt by students and the wider workforce, shows what's at stake in the new human capital while offering hope for the future.

Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2016 in the subject Economics - Case Scenarios, , language: English, abstract: Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) in Assosa town do not show the necessary performance level and some of the enterprises disappear from the market in their infant age. Hence, this study was conducted with the objective of assessing factors affecting performance of micro and small enterprises in Assosa town. After statistical analysis, the study concludes that both external and internal factors affect performance of MSEs and their existence could be improved. Variables such as political, legal, financial, marketing, working premises, infrastructural, opportunity seeking, persistence, commitment to the work, demand for efficiency and quality, goal setting, risk taking, information seeking, and self-confidence positively influence to performance of MSEs (profit) and significantly affect performance of MSEs. Similarly, for capital, variables such as political, legal, financial, marketing, working premises, technological, opportunity seeking, persistence, commitment to the work, demand for efficiency and quality, risk taking, information seeking, and self-confidence positively influence the performance of MSEs (capital) and significantly affect performance of MSEs. In order to reduce the influence of external and internal factors on performance of MSEs, policy makers and the service provider institutions need to consider and revise the extent, intensity, and quality of support and their linkages.
