Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fuzzy logic control (FLC) has proven to be a popular control methodology for many complex systems in industry, and is often used with great success as an alternative to conventional control techniques. However, because it is fundamentally model free, conventional FLC suffers from a lack of tools for systematic stability analysis and controller design. To address this problem, many model-based fuzzy control approaches have been developed, with the fuzzy dynamic model or the Takagi and Sugeno (T–S) fuzzy model-based approaches receiving the greatest attention. Analysis and Synthesis of Fuzzy Control Systems: A Model-Based Approach offers a unique reference devoted to the systematic analysis and synthesis of model-based fuzzy control systems. After giving a brief review of the varieties of FLC, including the T–S fuzzy model-based control, it fully explains the fundamental concepts of fuzzy sets, fuzzy logic, and fuzzy systems. This enables the book to be self-contained and provides a basis for later chapters, which cover: T–S fuzzy modeling and identification via nonlinear models or data Stability analysis of T–S fuzzy systems Stabilization controller synthesis as well as robust H∞ and observer and output feedback controller synthesis Robust controller synthesis of uncertain T–S fuzzy systems Time-delay T–S fuzzy systems Fuzzy model predictive control Robust fuzzy filtering Adaptive control of T–S fuzzy systems A reference for scientists and engineers in systems and control, the book also serves the needs of graduate students exploring fuzzy logic control. It readily demonstrates that conventional control technology and fuzzy logic control can be elegantly combined and further developed so that disadvantages of conventional FLC can be avoided and the horizon of conventional control technology greatly extended. Many chapters feature application simulation examples and practical numerical examples based on MATLAB®.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book introduces the so-called "stable factorization approach" to the synthesis of feedback controllers for linear control systems. The key to this approach is to view the multi-input, multi-output (MIMO) plant for which one wishes to design a controller as a matrix over the fraction field F associated with a commutative ring with identity, denoted by R, which also has no divisors of zero. In this setting, the set of single-input, single-output (SISO) stable control systems is precisely the ring R, while the set of stable MIMO control systems is the set of matrices whose elements all belong to R. The set of unstable, meaning not necessarily stable, control systems is then taken to be the field of fractions F associated with R in the SISO case, and the set of matrices with elements in F in the MIMO case. The central notion introduced in the book is that, in most situations of practical interest, every matrix P whose elements belong to F can be "factored" as a "ratio" of two matrices N,D whose elements belong to R, in such a way that N,D are coprime. In the familiar case where the ring R corresponds to the set of bounded-input, bounded-output (BIBO)-stable rational transfer functions, coprimeness is equivalent to two functions not having any common zeros in the closed right half-plane including infinity. However, the notion of coprimeness extends readily to discrete-time systems, distributed-parameter systems in both the continuous- as well as discrete-time domains, and to multi-dimensional systems. Thus the stable factorization approach enables one to capture all these situations within a common framework. The key result in the stable factorization approach is the parametrization of all controllers that stabilize a given plant. It is shown that the set of all stabilizing controllers can be parametrized by a single parameter R, whose elements all belong to R. Moreover, every transfer matrix in the closed-loop system is an affine function of the design parameter R. Thus problems of reliable stabilization, disturbance rejection, robust stabilization etc. can all be formulated in terms of choosing an appropriate R. This is a reprint of the book Control System Synthesis: A Factorization Approach originally published by M.I.T. Press in 1985.

Book excerpt: In recent years, control systems have become more sophisticated in order to meet increased performance and safety requirements for modern technological systems. Engineers are becoming more aware that conventional feedback control design for a complex system may result in unsatisfactory performance, or even instability, in the event of malfunctions in actuators, sensors or other system components. In order to circumvent such weaknesses, new approaches to control system design have emerged which can tolerate component malfunctions while maintaining acceptable stability and performance. These types of control systems are often known as fault-tolerant control systems (FTCS). More precisely, FTCS are control systems which possess the ability to accommodate component failure automatically. Analysis and Synthesis of Fault-Tolerant Control Systems comprehensively covers the analysis and synthesis methods of fault tolerant control systems. It unifies the methods for developing controllers and filters for a wide class of dynamical systems and reports on the recent technical advances in design methodologies. MATLAB® is used throughout the book, to demonstrate methods of analysis and design. Key features: • Provides advanced theoretical methods and typical practical applications • Provides access to a spectrum of control design methods applied to industrial systems • Includes case studies and illustrative examples • Contains end-of-chapter problems Analysis and Synthesis of Fault-Tolerant Control Systems is a comprehensive reference for researchers and practitioners working in this area, and is also a valuable source of information for graduates and senior undergraduates in control, mechanical, aerospace, electrical and mechatronics engineering departments.

Book excerpt: This book presents a modern perspective on the modelling, analysis, and synthesis ideas behind convex-optimisation-based control of nonlinear systems: it embeds them in models with convex structures. Analysis and Synthesis of Nonlinear Control Systems begins with an introduction to the topic and a discussion of the problems to be solved. It then explores modelling via convex structures, including quasi-linear parameter-varying, Takagi–Sugeno models, and linear fractional transformation structures. The authors cover stability analysis, addressing Lyapunov functions and the stability of polynomial models, as well as the performance and robustness of the models. With detailed examples, simulations, and programming code, this book will be useful to instructors, researchers, and graduate students interested in nonlinear control systems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present paper reviews the results of many previous investigations and develops a new theory and methodology for the analysis and synthesis of linear continuous control systems. The principles and methods proposed in this paper are not only applicable to the single-variable systems of feedback control and regulation, but also valid for the multivariable control systems of higher complexity. Matrices, the most appropriate mathematical tool for description of multivariable control process is used to discuss the problem of synthesis in control systems having several external disturbances (loads). The concept of the transfer sequence of a variable, derived from the transfer function of the variable by means of series is developed. A detailed discussion on the calculation and assessment of the quality criteria for the responses of individual controlled variables is given. Finally, I.L. Chebyshev's concept of the best uniform approximation is used to devise an extremely simple and effective method of synthesizing optimum transfer functions for a number of variables.

Book excerpt: Modern technological systems rely on sophisticated control functions to meet increased performance requirements. For such systems, Fault Tolerant Control Systems (FTCS) need to be developed. Active FTCS are dependent on a Fault Detection and Identification (FDI) process to monitor system performance and to detect and isolate faults in the systems. The main objective of this book is to study and to validate some important issues in real-time Active FTCS by means of theoretical analysis and simulation. Several models are presented to achieve this objective, taking into consideration practical aspects of the system to be controlled, performance deterioration in FDI algorithms, and limitations in reconfigurable control laws.

Book excerpt: Time-delay occurs in many dynamical systems such as biological systems, chemical systems, metallurgical processing systems, nuclear reactor, long transmission lines in pneumatic, hydraulic systems and electrical networks. Especially, in recent years, time-delay which exists in networked control s- temshasbroughtmorecomplexproblemintoanewresearcharea.Frequently, itisasourceofthegenerationofoscillation, instabilityandpoorperformance. Considerable e?ort has been applied to di?erent aspects of linear time-delay systems during recent years. Because the introduction of the delay factor renders the system analysis more complicated, in addition to the di?culties caused by the perturbation or uncertainties, in the control of time-delay s- tems, the problems of robust stability and robust stabilization are of great importance. This book presents some basic theories of stability and stabilization of systems with time-delay, which are related to the main results in this book. More attention will be paid on synthesis of systems with time-delay. That is, sliding mode control of systems with time-delay; networked control systems with time-delay; networked data fusion with random delay.
