Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Uniform Course of Study in Agriculture for the Elementary Schools of Ohio In the primary grade the chief object should be to lead the child to observe carefully and develop the habit of investigation. Through out the entire course the teacher should be ever mindful of the fact that the subject of agriculture, if properly taught, is of high educative value. It imparts to the child the ability to reason, the power of independent thinking and creative expression, richness of imagination, appreciation of that which is beautiful, and the culture which are generally developed through the instrumentality of the classics, mathematics, science, and art. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Eleventh Yearbook of the National Society for the Study of Education: Agricultural Education in Secondary Schools Some idea of the present demand for instructors qualified to teach agriculture in secondary schools may be derived from the fact that in the United States at present there are over a hundred special agricul tural schools located in 17 different states supported in whole or in part by the states, and that agriculture was taught in 1910, as a separate subject in more or less complete courses, to over pupils in public and 140 private high schools, according to the reports submitted by these schools to the Bureau of Education. It is true that much of the instruction given in these schools is very elementary and is of an informational rather than a practical character. It is true also that the courses given are very brief in the majority of cases. On the other hand there are fully as many high schools giving four-year courses as there are special agricultural schools and the courses given by them are as vocational in their character as the courses given by the majority of the special schools. California, for instance, has 12 high schools with agricultural departments in charge Of special agricultural teachers. All of these schools are supplied with land for instructional purposes vary ing from 3 to 27 acres in extent; all have available laboratories and several have greenhouses. Michigan has 11 high schools with four-year courses in agriculture, each taught by a graduate of the Michigan Agri cultural College. Massachusetts, New York, Nebraska, Iowa, Ohio, Minnesota, Tennessee, and Vermont each has several such schools. One or more may be found In almost every state in the Union. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Studies in Elementary Agriculture The studies of the following pages constitute part of the laboratory course given with the subject of agriculture in the Fresno State Normal. They are designed to prepare teachers for presenting the subject of agriculture in the rural school. They are not predigested and ready for presentation to the child with teacher's story, introduction, description and conclusion complete, but are outlines to direct the student in pre paring the studies for presentation to the child. The work of the student is complete only when, through his own efforts, each study is ready, from the teacher's story to the conclusion, for presentation to school children. Through the preparation of these studies the student gets a broad knowledge of elementary agriculture, experience in pre paring subject matter and material for presenting agricultural studies and nature study lessons, and begins to find, understand, and appreciate the beauty of all things out of doors. They include how to obtain material, what to have the children observe, how to report the observations, how to conduct simple experiments, etc. At the same time sufficient information is given with each lesson to enable the teacher to gain the fundamental facts that she should know in order to present the lesson successfully. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: . Renewal of Life by Transmission. The most notable distinction between living and inanimate things is that the former maintain themselves by renewal. A stone when struck resists. If its resistance is greater than the force of the blow struck, it remains outwardly unchanged. Otherwise, it is shattered into smaller bits. Never does the stone attempt to react in such a way that it may maintain itself against the blow, much less so as to render the blow a contributing factor to its own continued action. While the living thing may easily be crushed by superior force, it none the less tries to turn the energies which act upon it into means of its own further existence. If it cannot do so, it does not just split into smaller pieces (at least in the higher forms of life), but loses its identity as a living thing. As long as it endures, it struggles to use surrounding energies in its own behalf. It uses light, air, moisture, and the material of soil. To say that it uses them is to say that it turns them into means of its own conservation. As long as it is growing, the energy it expends in thus turning the environment to account is more than compensated for by the return it gets: it grows. Understanding the word "control" in this sense, it may be said that a living being is one that subjugates and controls for its own continued activity the energies that would otherwise use it up. Life is a self-renewing process through action upon the environment.
