Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of the Metallurgy of Iron Steel This book was prepared to meet a need which the first Author had felt in his teaching, viz., a book which, in one volume of moderate size, would cover the whole field of the Metallurgy of Iron and Steel. That the book has, to some extent at least, met this need is evidenced by the fact that a second edition has been called for. This edition has been carefully revised, and some chapters have been re-written, so that they may bring the information up to the present condition of our knowledge. Considerable attention has been given to the latest work in connection with the metallography and heat treatment of the metal. The difficulty of selection from the vast mass of material now available is very great, and the Authors have done their best to give an account of all the more important developments in processes and plant, whilst retaining as much of the older processes as is necessary to an understanding of modern developments. A few processes which are no longer in use are described on account of their historical interest. In such a work as this it is impossible that there should be much that is new, and the Authors wish to express their indebtedness to the writers who have gone before, particularly to Dr. Percy and Sir I. Lowthain Bell, who have passed away; and to Prof. Howe, Mr. H. H. Campbell, Dr. Stead, and other great workers who are still with us. The Authors have to thank the Councils of the various Societies for permission to use matter in their Proceedings, the Editors of various Technical Journals, and many private friends who have given help in various ways. In most cases the source of information and illustrations are acknowledged in the text or notes; but if this has been inadvertently omitted the Authors tender their sincere apology for the oversight. In the preparation of such a book, making use of notes accumulated through years of teaching, it is not always possible to ascertain the source from which information was obtained. To readers - especially students - the Authors would point out that no text-book can be more than a guide to reading. The books quoted should be referred to wherever possible, and no opportunity should be lost of referring to the original papers, as only by so doing can a real insight be obtained into the methods of the men who have made and are making the great industry, and whose influence for good in the world cannot be over-estimated; and one cannot make much progress himself till he has mastered the methods of those who have gone before. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Metallurgy of Iron: Containing Outlines of the History of Iron Manufacture, Methods of Assay, and Analyses of Iron Ores, Processes of Manufacture of Iron and Steel, Etc;, Etc The importance of the subject has claimed for the Metallurgy of Iron much careful scientific investi gation, both in this country and abroad; but being con fined, for the most part, to large and expensive works, or to the pages of scientific periodicals, it is scarcely available for the technical education of the great class to whom an accurate knowledge of the physical pro perties of the ores, and the latest and most approved means of reducing them to a condition suited for the purposes of the manufacturer, has become an imperative necessity to enable us fully to meet foreign competition. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Metallurgy: Iron and Steel In connection with the development of this process, the work of: Mushet must not be overlooked. Following Bessemer were many who, stimulated by his success, introduced other processes of steelmaking. Of these processes, the foremost, and one that is gaining ground yearly, is that of the regenerative furnace associated with the name of Siemens. This furnace gave rise to the now well-known siemens-martin process of steel making. The product of this process is a very uniform steel, and one that ofi'ers wide adaptability for structural purposes, ship and boiler plates, castings, etc. The latest development of the siemens-martin process is that of the Talbot open-hearth continuous method of steelmaking, which attracted so much attention at the Spring meeting of the Iron and Steel Institute, 1900. At this meeting the probable substitution in the near future of Bessemer steel by that of the open-hearth (siemens-martin) make was discussed. The ever-increasing strin geney of the specifications now applied to steel lends much probability to the eventual suppression of Bessemer steel by that of open-hearth make. In connection with these two methods of steelmaking, the dephosphorization process of Thomas and Gilchrist must be mentioned, resulting in the pro duction of basic steel. Germany and Bri tain annually produce large quantities of steel from basic Bessemer converters or basic lined open-hearth plants, thus utiliz in g irons for the production of good-quality metal, which, under other conditions, would be useless from a steel making point of view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Iron and Steel Iron is the most important of all the metals that have been pressed into the service of man, which is due, not only to its great abundance in Nature, but also to its unique properties. The result of this is that no one metal has received so much attention from both practical men and scientists, as is shown by the fact that some of the most prominent men in Europe and America are investigating the many chemical and physical properties of the metal and its application to the requirements of civilisation. Thus an enormous mass of information has accumulated, and is to be found in original papers and books. Portions of the subject are still in their youth and are growing vigorously, so that the teacher of to-day must become the student of to-morrow. On the other hand, parts of it are so old that their origin is lost in the mists of time, and dates back to the first glimmerings of that intelligence which now enables man to utilise to the fullest extent the valuable properties of the metal. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture and Properties Iron and Steel Some readers might prefer that less space should be devoted to theoretical matter and more to descriptions of apparatus, but in my Opinion the place for such information is in the trade periodicals. It takes so long to print a book that drawings are antiquated when the issue appears, but the fundamental principles of metallurgy remain the same. A book issued in England refers courteously to the former edition of this work, but states that little information is given concerning the practical details of operation. That 'same book sets forth that an open-hearth furnace is charged by putting the pig-iron in first; that in a. Twenty-five-ton furnace not over nine men can be employed, even when there are doors on both sides, and that with rapid work it takes two hours to charge a heat. Now those figures are true for the district with which that writer was familiar, but in America the pig-iron is put in last, while at Steel ton on a furnace of the size mentioned we use twice the number of men and with good scrap finish the work by charging, by hand labor only, in a period ranging from thirty minutes down to eleven minutes. Of equal value is much of the ao-called practical infor mation given in metallurgical treatises. It only remains to thank many friends, both at home and abroad, for aiding in this work which has been accomplished in the intervals of what I trust is not otherwise an entirely idle life. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture and Properties of Iron and Steel I have compared at some length the condition of the industry in each separate country. These descriptions of the various dis tricts or provinces are not intended as complete investigations. It would be impossible for instance to describe the American districts so fully that every engineer and metallurgist of our country would find all the information he might wish, or even find a record of all that he already knows. It would also be impossible to tell an Eng lish engineer much about those parts of his own country with which he is acquainted. It may be possible, however, to give some facts for the benefit of travelers; to clear the way for a foreigner visit ing America, or an American visiting other lands. It 'is for this purpose only that these articles have been written and their end will be accomplished if they furnish certain fundamental facts on which to base such a journey. Some readers might prefer that less space should be devoted to theoretical matter and more to descriptions and drawings of fur naces and apparatus, but in my opinion the place for such informa tion is in the trade periodicals. It takes so long to print a book like this that the drawings are antiquated when the issue appears, and every year that it stands upon the shelf it becomes more and more a catalogue of discarded devices, while on the other hand the fundamental principles of metallurgy remain the same from year to year, and their value knows no depreciation.
