Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline Analysis of the History of England (Revised) This Outline is a revision and enlargement of the An Outline Analysis of the History of England prepared by the writer for the use of his classes in English History at the Ohio State University in 1912. This won favor and the writer hopes that the following outline bringing the skeleton of the facts down to 1914 may be of some assistance to other teachers and students of English History. The purpose of the outline is not to provide a general summary of the facts, but merely a scheme of organization to suggest to the student what topics to emphasize in his reading and to teach him to-distinguish between essentials and non-essentials. Hence the facts are not usually stated, but the student is left to work them out from his readings in text books and reference books. It is assumed that the student will read thoroughly a good college text-book of English History such as Cross, History of England and Greater Britain, or Tout, Advanced History of Great Britain. In addition to the text-book students should read part or all the references to other books. Where the numerals (l), (3) each precede a reference -to a different book, it is suggested that the student read any one reference. Such references as have been included in the Outline are not a complete bibliography, but merely suggestions for reading. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Advanced History of England: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day The object of this book is to carry the study of English History a stage further than has been done in my Short History of England (longmans and It has been specially designed to meet the wants of four classes of readers: (1) of those, either at school or college, who, having mastered the elements of English History in such a book as the author's Elementary History of England (rivington, Percival, and and what are known as the 'outlines in such a book as the author's Short History, are preparing to study in greater detail such a period as 1485 to 1603, or 1714 to 1815 (2) of teachers who, while taking a class in the elements or outlines, ' wish to have in their own hands a fuller and more developed treatment of events 3 (3) of university students, who require a fuller treatment of the whole course of events than is given in the Short History; and (4) of those of the general public who wish to have in their hands a handy but fairly full history to which they may turn for ready information on the historical points that crop up day by day in politics or conversation. In trying to supply these needs I have throughout tried to keep in view certain principles which it may be useful to state. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Concise History of England and English People A history of England, given in a few hundred pages, must necessarily be a sketch. In the present volume the main purpose has been to make as prominent as possible the personal career of the chief actors in the several parts of the great drama. The work is in tended strictly as an introduction to a more continuous study of the subject 5 and the matter, it is hoped, has been so put as to awaken and call into action the reader's powers of thought and judgment. Unless these are exercised throughout, the task of reading history is of not the smallest use. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A New History of Great Britain: From the Roman Conquest to the Outbreak of the Great War Green, like every one else who tries to compress the story of England into one volume, had to take a selective view; for instance, he emphasized, in some centuries, literary history, in others, social. There are many gaps in his narrative, 'due to the imperative need of compres sion; and to these gaps we owe his singularly full treat ment of other parts of our history. The Short History was not a complete statement it was not meant to be such; but it is the account of what struck a man who possessed both knowledge and genius, as being the most important aspects of English History. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England, From the Earliest to the Present Time, Vol. 1 of 5: In Five Volumes To do SO would require not five, but fifty volumes. A full English History is certainly a desideratum in our literature, and in our apparatus for political life. But, even if it existed, a book on the plan of the present one would not be useless. Where a large long book is read by tens, a book of moderate size will be read by hundreds. But it must be a real History and to be this, it must omit nothing that is essential for clear knowledge and sound judgment; and it must be something more than a dry compendium of dates and facts, or a series of disjointed essays. It must have animation as well as accuracy. It must have unity and entirety of organism and purpose and it must have artistic proportions. Moreover, even as the biography of an individual is valueless without some knowledge of those with whom he had dealings, and of the society in which he moved, it is necessary to accompany the history of any one State with sketches of other States, and of the general progress of events in the civilised world. All this is to be done. Whether I have done or can do it, is, of course, a very different matter. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introductory History of England My own view is that English History should be an inheritance of childhood; that its legends and its romance should grow into our thoughts from very early years, and should expand themselves with the expansion of our minds; that we should feel History and dream of it rather than learn it as a lesson. Happy is that boy who, having so grown up with the story of his country, can people the fields and lanes of his home with the figures of the past; can hear the clatter of Rupert's horsemen down his village street, and can picture the good monks catching baskets-full of trout in the stream (there were more trout in it before the Reformation) wherein he is failing to get a rise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of King Richard the First of England The author of this series has made it his spe cial object to confine himself very strictly, even in the most minute details which he records, to historic truth. The narratives are not tales founded upon history, but history itself, without any embellishment, or any deviations from the strict truth so far as it can now be discovered by an attentive examination of the annals writ ten at the time when the events themselves cc curred. In writing the narratives, the author has endeavored to avail himself of the best sources of information which this country af fords; and though, of course, there must be in these volumes, as in all historical accounts.
