Zachow and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary foci of the study were to determine the relationships among perceptual modality, temporality, and academic achievement, and to develop implications for the academic counseling of middle school students based on the findings. The sample was composed of 613 students enrolled in Prineville Junior High School. The Edmonds Learning Style Identification Exercise, the metronome, and the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills were the instruments used to collect data. Five statistical tools were used in the analysis of data. The findings at the .05 level of significance were as follows: 1. There were no significant differences in perceptual modality mean scores for the three temporal groups. 2. There were no significant relationships between sex and temporal grouping (slow, medium, fast). 3. A significant relationship existed between grade level and temporal group. There was a higher concentration of sixth graders in the slow temporal group. 4. There was a significant difference between sex and the perceptual modality score of visualization. Males scored significantly higher. For the other three perceptual modality scores and sex, there was no significant differences. 5. There was no significant difference for grade level and perceptual modality mean scores. 6. There was no interaction for grade level and sex on perceptual modality mean scores. 7. There were no significant relationships among perceptual modality scores within each temporal group. 8. There were no significant relationships among academic achievement scores, preferred temporal pace, and perceptual modality scores. Implications for the academic counseling of middle school students stressed the importance of using visual materials in the curriculum for males, and the varying of instructional pace to accommodate differences in students' temporal paces.

Book Synopsis Practical Approaches to Using Learning Styles in Higher Education by : Rita Dunn
Download or read book Practical Approaches to Using Learning Styles in Higher Education written by Rita Dunn and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2000-04-30 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dunn and Griggs challenge the traditional instructional process of lecture/discussion in college classroom and describe the theory, practice, and research that support a wider variety of approaches to better accommodate the learning-style preferences of each student. Twenty-five practitioners from varied backgrounds and disciplines, representing 14 colleges and universities, outline alternative strategies they use with diverse students in their institutions of higher education. Some of these practitioners have been using learning-style for decades. Others have conducted research to test the various tenets of the Dunn and Dunn Learning- Style Model, and a few, only for the past five years, have begun providing instructional strategies that are congruent with their students' preferences. A road map is provided for college faculty to assist them in moving toward accommodating students' learning-style strengths by comparing the major theories of learning styles that range from uni- to multi-dimensional in scope. Strategies include: identifying and administering valid and reliable instruments for assessing college students' learning styles, interpreting assessment results so that each student becomes aware of his/her own strengths and is provided a computer-generated prescription for improving their study skills and successfully completing assignments, designing instruction to respond to both global and analytic students' processing styles, developing course content and materials to accommodate the learning-style preferences of college students, and evaluating the impact of learning-styles-based instruction.

Book Synopsis The Role of interest in Learning and Development by : K. Ann Renninger
Download or read book The Role of interest in Learning and Development written by K. Ann Renninger and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest is just emerging as a critical bridge between cognitive and affective issues in both learning and development. This developing "interest" in interest appears to be linked to an increasing concern for studying the individual in context, examining affective variables as opposed to purely structural features of text, analyzing the interrelationship of cognitive and social development, understanding practical applications of theories of motivation, and recognizing the importance of developmental psychology for the study of learning. This book addresses both how individual interest and interest inherent in stimuli (books, text, toys, etc.) across subjects affect cognitive performance. While the book's particular emphasis is on theory-driven research, each of the contributing authors offers a unique perspective on understanding interest and its effects on learning and development. As such, each has contributed a chapter in which particular questions in interest research are described and linked to a clearly stated theoretical perspective and recent findings. Relevant material from the broader literatures of psychology and education are analyzed in the context of these discussions. In addition, the introductory and concluding chapters build on the contributions to the volume by providing the basis of a coherent view of interest across genres such as stories and expository text, and domains as varied as play, reading, and mathematics.
