Abstract: ABSTRACT This study aims at gaining more insights on the vocabulary learning process of the low proficient second language learners of pre-intermediate or intermediate level. It is expected that the information obtained can benefit the vocabulary development of the low achievers. As vocabulary range is one of the most important factors that influence the progress of learners' second language learning, the study looks forward to offer suggestions to facilitate learners' vocabulary proficiency. The study examines low achievers' perceptions on vocabulary learning and their pattern of vocabulary learning strategy use especially the use of metacognitive vocabulary learning strategies. The study also intends to compare the effectiveness and preferences of the learners of two kinds of vocabulary learning strategies, social vocabulary learning strategies and cognitive vocabulary learning strategies. Data were collected through two questionnaires, a classroom experiment and semi-structured interviews. The results reveal the learning styles of the low achievers, particularly their intensive use of repetition strategies and their extremely limited use of metacognitive learning strategies to manage their vocabulary learning. Moreover, both social and cognitive vocabulary learning strategies are found to have their strengths and weaknesses to the low achievers. As a result, strategy training is highly recommended for these learners and suggestions on the preparation and the content of strategy training are made. ii DOI: 10.5353/th_b3870695 Subjects: Vocabulary - Study and teaching (Secondary) - China - Hong Kong Learning strategies Underachievers - China - Hong Kong - Attitudes

Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled An Investigation into the Effects of Vocabulary Learning Strategy Training on Secondary School Students in Hong Kong submitted by Lok Ho Sin for the degree of Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics, the University of Hong Kong September, 2007. The research described in this paper investigates the effects of vocabulary learning strategy training on Chinese learners in a local EMI secondary school. A questionnaire adapted from Schmitt's taxonomy (1997) was administered to 68 secondary four students before and after a training program. It was found that students used discovery strategies more often than consolidation strategies. Repetition was used more commonly among learners. Certain mnemonic strategies were seldom used and not perceived as useful. A five-week training program which included five medium to low ranking strategies in terms of frequency of use and perceived usefulness in the questionnaire was carried out in regular class periods. A comparison of scores in the pre-training and the post-training tests in which students' receptive and productive knowledge of vocabulary items was assessed showed the subjects achieved a higher mean score in the post-test. As for the findings of the post training questionnaire, there was also an increase in mean scores and percentages in the frequency of use and perceived usefulness of most of the strategies. More in-depth qualitative data was obtained from individual interviews with six subjects. They expressed difficulties on vocabulary learning and little experience in vocabulary learning strategy training. The majority of them admitted not having made full use of the strategies presented in the training program. Conclusion on whether the training program helped learners learn more effectively could not be drawn in a clear-cut manner considering both the quantitative and qualitative data. Nevertheless, an important implication was that strategy training should be considered in the language classroom as the subjects agreed that receiving strategy training would be beneficial to them. It could raise their awareness of different strategies available and they could use them flexibly according to their learning styles. Recommendations are made for future research to look at the extent to which strategies are used, benefits and drawbacks, effects of explicit vocabulary strategy instruction on young learners, alternatives to enhance autonomous learning through the use of independent learning strategies and teachers' perspective of strategy use and training. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled The effectiveness of vocabulary learning strategies of Chinese low achievers submitted by Cheung Chok Yee for the degree of Master of Applied Linguistics at the University of Hong Kong September, 2004 The study explores the effect of the Keyword method and the Combined Context method on learning English vocabulary by Chinese low achieving students within a classroom situation. The two methods were compared by using a between-subject approach and a within-subject approach. Eighty F.1 remedial class students participated in the present study and they were divided into 2 groups. Group A students went through all the processes of this study while Group B tried out the Combined Context method only. The present study also aims to explore more about the different practices of the Keyword method. Previous research on second language (L2) vocabulary learned by the Keyword method has primarily involved the use of first language (L1) keywords to learn vocabulary of other languages. The present study employed both L1 and L2 keywords to learn a group of new words. Students learning the Keyword method (Group A) were instructed to learn 20 English words by using 10 L1 keywords and 10 L2 keywords. The results were compared with the results of the Combined Context group (Group B) in which students were taught the same 20 words. Students in Group A were then required to learn another 20 English words with self generated keywords and another 20 words by using the Combined Context method. Questionnaires were distributed to all the subjects to investigate their usual vocabulary learning strategies and their perceived usefulness. Students' feedback on the different learning approaches was reviewed after the experiments. The overall results reveal that students using the Keyword method outperformed the ones using the Combined Context method. Concerning the differences between using L1 and L2 keywords, they did not differ significantly in the immediate and conditions while the use of L2 keywords has shown to be more beneficial to written form recall conditions. No significance difference was found in the results between teacher-supplied keyword and student-generated keyword conditions. The implications of these findings, the limitations and suggestions for further research are discussed. As successful language learners are found to make good use of vocabulary learning strategies to facilitate the learning process, researchers are interested in investigating whether less competent language learners can also benefit from strategy instruction. The present study aimed to examine the relative effectiveness of and attitudes towards the two vocabulary strategies, namely the keyword method and the context method in L2 vocabulary acquisition among 61 Cantonese-speaking Chinese students in Hong Kong. The study involved two classes of Secondary one students studying in a band one English-medium co-educational secondary school. In the first round of the study, Class A and Class B learnt a list of 10 target vocabulary items. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected through vocabulary pre-tests, post-tests, questionnaires and interviews. In the second round, Class A and Class B swapped the learning conditions to learn another list of 10 target vocabulary items. The same procedures as for the first round were followed. Findings of this study indicated, first, the superiority of the keyword method over the context method in vocabulary retention. Second, the majority of the participants thought the context method was more useful than the keyword method and preferred the former one in the future. To conclude, this study may be of importance in investigating the effectiveness of the two strategies by Chinese learners in the Hong Kong school context, as well as in providing a better understanding of their attitudes towards the two strategies. This book was released on 2012 with total page 642 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Research on learner beliefs is made on the assumption that learners' perspectives and thoughts guide their learning behaviours (e.g. Horwitz, 1987, 1988; Wenden 1987; Barcelos 2003) and determine the ultimate success of their learning (e.g. Ellis, 2004, 2008). Yet to date few studies have attempted to investigate the development of learner beliefs and the interactions among the three constructs: learner beliefs, learner strategy use and learning outcomes. This multicase study employed naturalistic methods (Lincoln & Guba, 1985) to investigate the development of five low-proficiency Chinese ESL learners' beliefs, language learning strategies and English language proficiency over a 16-week period. The principal aim of the study was to examine the relationships between the learners' beliefs and learning strategy and the impact of both on learning outcomes. A number of data collection methods (e.g. interviews, diaries, class observations, stimulated recall, and a battery of tests) were employed to gather triangulated data. Qualitative data analysis identified four major changes in their beliefs. First, the learners changed their beliefs about approaches to language learning from an initial analytical approach (e.g. learning grammatical rules) to a later more experiential one (e.g. watching TV). Second, they shifted the focus of their language learning from accuracy to fluency. Third, a new belief about group/pair work emerged after the learners were exposed to new approaches of language teaching in New Zealand. Finally, all the learners' self-efficacy beliefs strengthened as their language progressed. Like beliefs, some of the learners' strategies also developed over the observed period. At time 2, the learners increased their contact with English outside the institution. In addition, they started employing social strategies and higher order cognitive strategies. Gains in the learners' proficiency were linked to their language learning strategy use, which was underpinned by their beliefs. Those learners who held beliefs about an experiential approach to language learning tended to advance more in speaking and vocabulary tests, whereas those who held iii beliefs relating to an analytic approach showed moderate gains in a standardized general English test. However, this relationship did not hold when the learners failed to implement their beliefs. This suggests that beliefs do not have a direct impact on learning outcomes and that their influence depends on whether they have an effect on learning strategies. This study sheds further light on the characteristics of the good language learner. One of the learners demonstrated language improvement across all the tests. She distinguished herself from the other learners in her concern for accuracy and fluency, her stronger self-efficacy beliefs, her empathy towards the target culture, her autonomous learning behaviours and her effective use of learning strategies. The thesis concludes with a number of recommendations for policy makers and instructional practice."--Abstract.

Starting from the social phenomenon that a large number of Mainland Chinese students obtain their further education in Western universities, the author carries out a longitudinal study by using instruments of vocabulary levels tests, questionnaires and interviews. On the basis of an in-depth investigation of vocabulary strategy usage by Chinese learners in widely differing environments, the author develops a model of vocabulary acquisition. This is the first model to combine both linguistic and non-linguistic strategies, motivation, and the stages of vocabulary learning into one comprehensive representation of vocabulary acquisition. The book not only offers a solid data base but also suggests effective strategies to enhance English language teaching and learning.

Abstract: This study explored the metacognitive awareness of reading strategies used among F.3 English as a Second Language (ESL) students enrolled in a band 1 secondary school in Hong Kong. Usage as well as strategic knowledge of reading strategies of high and low English proficiency students were compared quantitatively and qualitatively. In the quantitative portion of the study, 37 students responded to the Metacognitive Awareness of Reading Strategies Inventory (MARSI), which is designed to assess matacognitive awareness and perceived usage of reading strategies of adolescent and adult ESL readers when they read school-related materials. In the qualitative portion of the study, four participants (2 female and 2 male) from the high proficiency group and four participants (2 female and 2 male) from the low proficiency group participated in a semi-structured interview, which aimed to elicit their strategic knowledge in reading English. Results revealed that Hong Kong ESL students on the whole used a wide range of reading strategies. High-proficiency ESL students were more able to verbalize the strategic knowledge and strategic resources available to them. They showed better understanding on planning for reading, monitoring their comprehension and tackling reading difficulties. In contrast, the low-proficiency group showed limited strategic knowledge on why and how to employ the reading strategies. Moreover, their utilization of reading strategies seemed to be confined to their limited lexical and vocabulary knowledge in ESL reading. Based on the findings, some practical implications for ESL reading-strategy instruction are drawn. Limitations of this study and recommendations for further research were discussed. Book excerpt: This textbook provides a practical and research-based foundation for teaching second language (L2) multiword units (also commonly called collocations). Multiword units - such as strong tea, beautiful weather, or would you mind -cannot be readily understood or predicted by the meanings of their component parts, and prove particularly challenging for English language learners. With contributions from top scholars, this text presents a thorough and rounded overview of the principles and practices currently dominant in teaching L2 phrases in a variety of instructional settings around the world. Divided into two sections, Part I examines the pedagogical foundations of teaching the essential units of language. Part II covers a range of techniques and classroom activities for implementing instruction. Intended for students and teacher educators, this accessible volume integrates the key principles, strategies, and applications of current and effective English language instruction for both vocabulary and grammar.
