Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the notion of Global Englishes (GE) has been widely discussed in the literature, few books consider how GE can be translated into educational practice. This book addresses the incorporation of GE into language policy and curriculum, pedagogy and assessment practices, and focuses on a wide range of geographical and language contexts. Incorporating GE into language curriculum, pedagogy and assessment practices calls for a reframing of our pedagogical practices that take into account the use of Englishes in intercultural and multicultural encounters where people have different first languages and cultural backgrounds. This book will be of interest to policymakers, curriculum developers and practitioner-researchers in the area of English language education.

This book was released on 2008 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Dimension" is the annual volume containing the selected, refereed, edited Proceedings of each year's conference. The Southern Conference on Language Teaching (SCOLT), held its annual conference, April 3-5, 2008, at the Springmaid Beach Resort and Conference Center, in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, in collaboration with the South Carolina Foreign Language Teachers' Association (SCFLTA). The SCOLT Board of Directors chose as this year's theme, "Languages for the Nation," because it suggested opportunities for language professionals to develop presentations on a wide array of topics. Those whose presentations were approved were given the opportunity to submit an abstract for an article for possible inclusion in "Dimension 2008." The articles selected for the present volume treat topics of interest to language teachers in a variety of ways. Some provide updates on timely issues of interest to the profession; others shed light on significant topics that are occasionally overlooked; and a few provide novel treatments of familiar subjects. Following an introduction by editors C. Maurice Cherry and Carol Wilkerson, the articles selected for this volume are: (1) Drama in the Classroom and Improved Academic Performance (Dennis R. Miller, Jr.); (2) An Analysis of the Teaching Proficiency Through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS) Method (David Alley and Denise Overfield); (3) Technoconstructivism and the Millennial Generation: Creative Writing in the Foreign Language Classroom (Edwina Spodark); (4) Technology for Oral Assessment (Patricia Early and Peter B. Swanson); (5) The Teacher Work Sample in Foreign Language Education (Marat Sanatullov); (6) Connecting a Standards-Based Curriculum with Student Performance and Assessment (Rosalie Cheatham); (7) The National Security Language Initiative and Less Commonly Taught Languages (Elvira Sanatullova-Allison); and (8) The Belgian Connection (Lisa Signori). (Individual articles contain references, tables, and appendices.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2020 in the subject Speech Science / Linguistics, grade: 2,3, University of Cologne, language: English, abstract: This paper will look at one important factor in mastering the acquisition of a second language - motivation. It will be argued that the development of positive attitudes and motivation has a great impact on an individual’s success in second language learning. Evidence for these claims will be based on different studies, including one by Moyer (1999) on highly motivated subjects learning German and another by Pfenninger and Singleton (2016) which compares data from motivation questionnaires and language experience essays completed by 200 Swiss learners of English at both the beginning and the end of secondary school. Various researchers believe that age is the one factor which determines whether a subject is able to master a second language to a native-like level or not. However, in this paper it is argued that other factors such as motivational matters also play a vital role in the acquisition of a second language. If indeed this is the case, different concepts of motivation need to be taken into consideration.

Book excerpt: This book brings together chapters that describe, investigate, and analyze the place of English in education in multilingual Philippines. Unlike most studies on languages in education, which take a neutral, de-contextualized stance, this volume take a pluricentric view of the English language by positioning it in relation to its varieties, as well as to other languages in the country. Because of the changing realities of English in the Philippines, traditional assumptions about the language as monolithic and unchanging, as well as about how it should be taught and learned, need to be revisited and re-conceptualized.
