Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As its title powerfully suggests, this bookwhile being a personal memoir, a narration of ones life journey from sunrise to sunsettranscends the personal. Its uniqueness lies in the fact that these memories are the memories of an immigrant who has lived in the country as a US citizen (with an American-born father) for some sixty years. It is much more than a list of events and anecdotes of an immigrant experience. It is written in a Dantesque and Vichian spirit, and as such, it goes beyond the listing of historical events and people. More than a physical journey, it is an intellectual journey into the mind of an immigrant in search of ones self and ones ethnic identity. As such, it is a universal journey with which nonimmigrants, even native-born, can easily emphatize. Our common humanity makes it universal. As Dante well put it when he began the narration of his lifes journey, In the middle of the journey of our lives, I found myself in a dark wood. As Dante begins the journey guided by Virgil and Breatrice, he finds out that indeed the journey is universal beyond the purely personal. As Michelangelo said, Ancor imparo [I am still learning]. He uttered such a statement at the venerable age of eighty-nine, a few days before he died. He was still sculpting and learning. Likewise, if we dare to begin the journey, at whatever age we may find ourselves, we may soon find out that we too are still learning, and the journey may well have a common purpose and destination.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whom We Shall Welcome examines World War II immigration of Italians to the United States, an under-studied period in Italian immigration history. Danielle Battisti looks at efforts by Italian American organizations to foster Italian immigration along with the lobbying efforts of Italian Americans to change the quota laws. While Italian Americans (and other white ethnics) had attained virtual political and social equality with many other groups of older-stock Americans by the end of the war, Italians continued to be classified as undesirable immigrants. Her work is an important contribution toward understanding the construction of Italian American racial/ethnic identity in this period, the role of ethnic groups in U.S. foreign policy in the Cold War era, and the history of the liberal immigration reform movement that led to the 1965 Immigration Act. Whom We Shall Welcome makes significant contributions to histories of migration and ethnicity, post-World War II liberalism, and immigration policy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Remembering Italian America: Memory, Migration, Identity examines the life of Italians in the United States and the role of migration and collective memory in the history of the construction of Italian American identity. Employing the concept of communicative memory, the authors explain the processes that gave shape to Italian identity in America and the ways in which a symbolic identity became concretized in Italian American oral histories. The text explores the Italy migrants left behind, transatlantic networks, the welcome received by the Italian newcomers, the socioeconomic fabric of Italian America, and the singular worldview that grew out of the immigrant experience. In exploring the role of memory in the construction of Italian American identity, the book analyzes the commonalities in the lives of immigrants, allowing the Italian American experience to speak to the circumstances of newer immigrant communities and allowing these new immigrant communities to speak to the Italian migrant history. Looking at Italian American culture from a multidisciplinary perspective, this volume brings various theoretical perspectives to bear on "what, why, and how" questions concerning the Italian American experience. This book will be of interest to students of ethnic studies, immigration studies, and American/transnational studies, as well as American history. Winner of the 2022 Italian American Studies Association Book Award

Book excerpt: “[A] clear, sympathetic, but not sentimental description of Italian-American experience from the roots in Italy to settlement in the United States, describing the cultural patterns which crossed the ocean with the emigres and the vicissitudes as well as the progress of the integration of the immigrants and their culture into American society... [an] excellent book... the scholarship and readability of this book make it stand out among others of its kind and it is a contribution to both public understanding and intellectual inquiry.” — Francis A. J. Ianni, Political Science Quarterly “[A] lucid analysis of the twilight of ethnic separateness for Italian-Americans.” — Sandra Schoenberg Kling, American Journal of Sociology “Richard Alba has written an important book... With clarity and precision Alba traces the history and sociology of Italian Americans over the course of the past century and concludes that whereas Italian descent was once a major impediment to inclusion in American social life, it is no longer such an obstacle. Offering a detached, scholarly view of his subject, Alba maintains that ethnic-revival protagonists have misread what in fact was taking place: structural assimilation.” — Salvatore J. Lagumina, The Annals of the American Academy of Political and Social Science “This short book delivers more than it promises... One might expect an overview of Italian-Americans’ experiences, addressing their origins, migration, reception, and adaptation patterns, in a form appropriate for undergraduate courses on ethnic relations. These predictable subjects are indeed covered, in a readable, accurate account as comprehensive as possible in less than two hundred pages. But what is notable for sociologists outside of the classroom is that this volume does significantly more... the book’s thematic concern is assimilation.” — Eric Woodrum, Social Forces “[A] brief and lucid account of Italian Americans.” — Dino Cinel, The Journal of American History

Book excerpt: When southern Italians began emigrating to the U.S. in large numbers in the 1870s-part of the "new immigration" from southern and eastern rather than northern Europe-they were seen as racially inferior, what David A. J. Richards terms "nonvisibly" black. The first study of its kind, Italian American explores the acculturation process of Italian immigrants in terms of then-current patterns of European and American racism. Delving into the political and legal context of flawed liberal nationalism both in Italy (the Risorgimento) and the United States (Reconstruction Amendments), Richards examines why Italian Americans were so reluctant to influence depictions of themselves and their own collective identity. He argues that American racism could not have had the durability or political power it has had either in the popular understanding or in the corruption of constitutional ideals unless many new immigrants, themselves often regarded as racially inferior, had been drawn into accepting and supporting many of the terms of American racism. With its unprecedented focus on Italian American identity and an interdisciplinary approach to comparative culture and law, this timely study sheds important light on the history and contemporary importance of identity and multicultural politics in American political and constitutional debate.
