Book excerpt: Until a few years ago I concentrated my attention on workers' compensa tion programs in the United States and Canada. Because the United States has 52 programs and Canada has eight, I was exposed to a diversity of approaches that caused me to believe that few other approaches existed. Since 1984 I have become more aware of what the rest of the world has been doing and discovered that my knowledge needed to be broadened significantly. The trigger action was a 1984 faculty research exchange agreement between Keio University in Tokyo and the University of Minnesota that made it possible for me to spend much of my time studying Japan's workers' compensation program and comparing it with the United States approaches. Japan's program had several features that I had not encountered in the United States or Canada. After this experience I attached considerably more value to and spent more time studying the Social Security Administration's biennial reports on Social Security Pro grams Throughout The World, which include workers' compensation programs. I also presented papers at two meetings of the International Insurance Society based on my Japanese and Social Security Adminis tration report research. Many participants urged further study in this area and offered to send me materials describing their nations' programs. The result is this study which I hope that readers will find interesting and worthwhile.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. Allan Hunt and Marcus Dillender provide a succinct analysis of the state of WC programs in North America by focusing on three key performance issues: 1) the adequacy of compensation for those disabled in the workplace, 2) return-to-work performance for injured workers, and 3) prevention of disabling injury and disease. Following a brief introductory chapter that provides a discussion of the difficulties of trying to compare so many diverse programs, Hunt and Dillender devote a chapter to each of the three performance issues and provide empirical findings and useful guidance for policymakers and researchers as they set their sights on adapting WC for the twenty-first century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workers' compensation causes headaches throughout all levels of an organization. Injuries affect production, costs, and morale. Managing Workers' Compensation: A Guide to Injury Reduction and Effective Claim Management lays out - in logical order - management and safety procedures that reduce injuries and the aggravation that follows. The authors cover hiring, training, and managing employees with injury avoidance in mind. They provide a blueprint for dealing with injured employees and their families, and for determining the correct time for the employee to return to work. The book discusses the all-important issues of fraud, modified duty, substance abuse testing and accident investigations. It also provides guidance for managing your organization's safety efforts in a manner that targets workers' compensation cost control as one of its major objectives. In addition to comprehensive coverage of workers' compensation, the book gives you a thorough explanation of additional sources of assistance, including the availability and utility of Internet safety resources, a complete listing of state workers' compensation agencies, and sample checklists that help you evaluate your workplace. Although workers' compensation laws vary from state-to-state, the principles behind the system and the ability of employers to influence their own premiums remain consistent. By gaining a thorough understanding of these principles and implementing proven cost control strategies, you can realize substantial savings. Managing Workers' Compensation: A Guide to Injury Reduction and Effective Claim Management explains the process by which premiums are calculated and shows how you can impact - favorably - the amount your organization pays in premiums.

Workers' compensation coverage is relatively easy to understand. It's the legal, procedural and contractual issues surrounding workers' compensation that are complicated. In "The Insurance Professional's Practical Guide to Workers' Compensation," Boggs addresses in clear, jargon-free English many of the concepts, policies and practices in workers compensation that brokers, risk advisors, and corporate risk managers need to know. The chapters, such as on which injuries and which workers are covered, free the reader from having to wade through dense legal and regulatory treatises. Boggs explains to non-lawyers legal aspects of workers compensation. If you need to use the book as little as one time a year, get it, because you'll probably need it much more often.

This book was released on 2018-04-27 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The workplace is where 156 million working adults in the United States spend many waking hours, and it has a profound influence on health and well-being. Although some occupations and work-related activities are more hazardous than others and face higher rates of injuries, illness, disease, and fatalities, workers in all occupations face some form of work-related safety and health concerns. Understanding those risks to prevent injury, illness, or even fatal incidents is an important function of society. Occupational safety and health (OSH) surveillance provides the data and analyses needed to understand the relationships between work and injuries and illnesses in order to improve worker safety and health and prevent work-related injuries and illnesses. Information about the circumstances in which workers are injured or made ill on the job and how these patterns change over time is essential to develop effective prevention programs and target future research. The nation needs a robust OSH surveillance system to provide this critical information for informing policy development, guiding educational and regulatory activities, developing safer technologies, and enabling research and prevention strategies that serves and protects all workers. A Smarter National Surveillance System for Occupational Safety and Health in the 21st Century provides a comprehensive assessment of the state of OSH surveillance. This report is intended to be useful to federal and state agencies that have an interest in occupational safety and health, but may also be of interest broadly to employers, labor unions and other worker advocacy organizations, the workers' compensation insurance industry, as well as state epidemiologists, academic researchers, and the broader public health community. The recommendations address the strengths and weaknesses of the envisioned system relative to the status quo and both short- and long-term actions and strategies needed to bring about a progressive evolution of the current system.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the debate over health care reform continues, costs have become a critical measure in the many plans and proposals to come before us. Knowing costs is important because it allows comparisons across such disparate health conditions as AIDS, Alzheimer's disease, heart disease, and cancer. This book presents the results of a major study estimating the large and largely overlooked costs of occupational injury and illness--costs as large as those for cancer and over four times the costs of AIDS. The incidence and mortality of occupational injury and illness were assessed by reviewing data from national surveys and applied an attributable-risk-proportion method. Costs were assessed using the human capital method that decomposes costs into direct categories such as medical costs and insurance administration expenses, as well as indirect categories such as lost earnings and lost fringe benefits. The total is estimated to be $155 billion and is likely to be low as it does not include costs associated with pain and suffering or of home care provided by family members. Invaluable as an aid in the analysis of policy issues, Costs of Occupational Injuryand Illness will serve as a resource and reference for economists, policy analysts, public health researchers, insurance administrators, labor unions and labor lawyers, benefits managers, and environmental scientists, among others. J. Paul Leigh is Professor in the School of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Preventive Medicine, University of California, Davis. Stephen Markowitz, M.D., is Professor in the Department of Community Health and Social Medicine, City University of New York Medical School. Marianne Fahs is Director of the Health Policy Research Center, Milano Graduate School of Management and Urban Policy, New School University. Book excerpt: A staggering 98% of all private-sector businesses in the U.S. are small businesses. With very few exceptions, these employers are required to purchase workers¿ compensation insurance. For many, the cost of providing that coverage takes a significant bite out of their company¿s profits. Unfortunately, resources that are specifically targeted to assist small businesses reduce their workers¿ compensation costs are nearly non-existent. As a result, the overwhelming majority of small business employers learn how to manage their workers¿ compensation costs through years of trial and error. Unfortunately, they pay for those errors through much higher than necessary workers¿ compensation premiums. CHOMP COMP is written specifically to small businesses owners and managers and is intended to be used as a resource and guide. Although CHOMP COMP assumes that the reader knows nothing about workers¿ compensation insurance, it does not delve into impractical timelines explainaing the evolution of workers¿ compensation insurance. Nor does it list specific details about workers¿ compensation legislation that are bound to change within months of the book¿s publication. Instead, CHOMP COMP provides practical information to help small business employers understand workers¿ compensation insurance and the factors that influence premiums. From there, it tackles the those factors one after another. The authors have taken great effort to present the material in an easy to-read format and have intentionally limited the length of the chapters to enable small business employers to read and digest chapters in the spare 15 to 20 minutes they can carve out of their busy schedules.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whiplash is diagnosed so frequently that in the U.S. alone its annual cost is estimated at between 13 and 18 billion dollars. Up to 10 per cent of all whiplash "victims" are reported as permanently disabled. Andrew Malleson contends that whiplash is nothing more than a neck strain that heals in a matter of days or weeks and argues that medical and legal professionals foster and create illnesses by dangling illusive fortunes in front of would-be claimants. In an exposé of how some health care and legal professionals prey on the anxieties and greed of their clients, Malleson argues that whiplash is only one of a long list of largely fabricated illnesses and injuries – such as fibromyalgia, repetitive strain injury, chronic fatigue syndrome, occupational back pain, chronic pain syndrome, and post-traumatic stress disorder – that drain resources from the health care system.

Book excerpt: Featuring insightful, actionable and proven cost-saving ideas, How To Save Big On Workers' Compensation shows how employers can maximize productivity and profits through safety and a culture of caring. This essential guide shares strategies that saved a quarter of a billion dollars. This easy-to-read book includes exclusive interviews with leading industry experts. The experts include Larry LaPointe, former director of the Division of Confidential Investigations at the New York State Insurance Fund (NYSIF); Ed Hiller, director of Claims and Medical Operations for NYSIF; Brian Mittman, the managing partner of Markhoff & Mittman, a law firm helping injured workers; Robert Firmbach, a veteran loss-control and safety expert; Eileen Preiato, the Friedlander Claims Solution manager; and Cosmo Preiato, executive vice president of Friedlander Group and leader of Safety Group Underwriting and Operations. "Friedlander's approach in this well-written, helpful book is to focus on what employers can do to minimize workers' compensation claims in the first place. He believes that by creating a "culture of caring," employers can effectively save money on workers' compensation, because "that culture will maximize your productivity, efficiencies, and profits." ...This revelation alone makes the book valuable, along with several eye-opening interviews with workers' compensation experts. Employers will gain insight into such key issues as claims and premium fraud, abuse of the system, loss control and reducing the cost of claims.
