Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the complex array of factors in teacher education programs that influence pre-service teachers' instructional practices with diverse students. Participants in the study included eight female 2008 graduates of a teacher education program at a private university. Factors considered were organized around four main themes: (a) campus factors (student demographics, social support, supervision, materials, mentoring, and curriculum), (b) individual characteristics (attitudes and beliefs, cognitive ability, and social support), (c) professional standards (knowledge, skills, and dispositions), and (d) university factors (seminars/courses, social support, supervision, collaboration, and curriculum). In an effort to closely examine variables, the researcher conducted interviews and reviewed archival data, including e- folio entries, observation notes, candidate reflections, and conference summaries. Due to the complex nature of the topic, this study entailed a descriptive, non-experimental cross case-study research design. The Classroom Instructional Practices Scale (Johnsen et al., 2002) was used to determine the degree to which each of the study participants differentiated instruction in the areas of content, rate, preference, and environment. After An Exploratory Study of the Factors That Influence Pre-service Teachers' Instructional Practices with Diverse Students close examination of the 17 factors, four emerged as having the greatest influence on instructional practices of pre-service teachers with diverse students: (a) the beliefs of the individual interns, (b) characteristics of mentor teachers to whom the interns were assigned for their culminating field experiences, (c) characteristics of the intern supervisors and other university faculty members who worked with the interns, and (d) the coursework/seminars that the interns participated in during their culminating field experiences.

Book excerpt: Dramatic increases in the enrollment of linguistically diverse students within U.S. public schools coupled with increased expectations for all students to interact with complex texts, rich disciplinary language, and academic discourse features highlights an increasing need for repositioning language and language expertise in the classroom. Such changes signal a corresponding need for a paradigm shift within teacher preparation programs and capacity building amongst teacher educators. This qualitative, multi-case study investigates the efforts of five university-based teacher preparation programs across the U.S. selected as positive exemplars of diverse approaches to support teacher candidates' work with linguistically diverse students. Framed within a sociocultural paradigm, the study utilizes an ecological systems perspective and theories of dialogism to analyze the intersecting and overlapping social, political, and cultural factors which may influence program design, shape intentional supports for individual teacher educators, and impact the beliefs and practices of teacher candidates. Drawing upon ethnographic methods, data was sourced through four methods: 1) artifact collection of programmatic and public documents, 2) individual interviews with teacher education faculty and recent graduates, 3) observational field notes from visits to teacher education courses and K-12 classrooms, and 4) field notes and reflexive memos from campus visits. Findings describe multiple options for programs to support teacher candidate learning around teaching English learners (ELs), characterizing each approach not only by the particular programmatic structures required but also by the impact on demands for faculty autonomy, collaboration or shared expertise, connections with clinical experiences, and the resulting depth of candidate knowledge. Further, the analysis of institutional practices, structures, and resources available to support faculty learning and capacity building efforts for teacher educators at these institutions confirms the importance of developing teacher educator capacity to support the delivery of programmatic content related to language education. Lastly, the examination of data from recent graduates offers insights into the impact of both individual factors and planned learning experiences on graduates' professional practices supporting ELs, while exposing tensions between what programs prepare teachers to do and how this is actualized in schools.

Book excerpt: Special education teacher preparation programs are now expected to prepare special education teachers to work in a variety of settings, teach a variety of contents, and a variety of students with disabilities, including those with severe disabilities. Scholars have argued that for individuals with severe learning needs, the acquisition of literacy skills goes beyond mandated access to general education curriculum- arguing instead that acquiring literacy skills is a quality of life issue. Although some work has been done to identify evidenced-based practices for teaching students with severe needs, including literacy skills, the research to practice gap is well documented. Importantly, there has been little emphasis on examining preservice teacher preparation that prepares teachers to meet the academic and social learning needs of these students. Teacher education programs are under increasing pressure to demonstrate the importance of preservice preparation. Thus, the purpose of this study is to examine the various influences, processes and extent of special education preservice teachers' appropriation of pedagogical tools for teaching reading to students with moderate to severe disabilities within the context of reading methods and instructional strategies courses paired with a field experience. This study will document which components of this experience influenced preservice special education teachers' adoption of pedagogical tools for meeting the literacy needs of school-aged students with severe disabilities. Qualitative data included interviews with preservice teachers, course instructors, and field supervisors, as well as course artifacts data and field notes. Data were analyzed using grounded theory. Qualitative findings revealed that course and field experiences afforded preservice special education teachers access to both conceptual tools and pedagogical tools. During coursework, concepts related to evidence-based literacy instruction for students with moderate to severe disabilities were covered. In addition, conceptual tools such as the belief that every student can learn and every student deserves a functional communication system were communicated by course instructors. Practical tools such as assessing communication needs and goal setting were introduced. Notably, while all preservice special education teachers had access to tool introduction, findings suggest that individual factors interacted with contextual factors to influence preservice special education teachers' appropriation of pedagogical tools. Preservice special education teachers varied on individual factors such as reflexivity, career direction, motivation, and prior experience with students with significant needs. Contextual factors included relationships with mentor teachers, classroom schedules, instructional practices, and on-site coaching and feedback from course instructors and field supervisors. The majority of preservice teachers adopted tools at a medium-high range, which suggests that coursework coupled with field experiences equipped the vast majority of preservice special education teachers with knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to serve students with significant needs in the future.
