Book Synopsis High-Lift Aerodynamics by : Jochen Wild
Download or read book High-Lift Aerodynamics written by Jochen Wild and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-02-03 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a detailed look at high-lift aerodynamics, which deals with the aerodynamic behavior of lift augmentation means from various approaches. After an introductory chapter, the book discusses the physical limits of lift generation, giving the lift generation potential. It then explains what is needed for an aircraft to fly safely by analyzing the high-lift-related requirements for certifying an aircraft. Aircraft needs are also analyzed to improve performance during takeoff, approach, and landing. The book discusses in detail the applied means to increase the lift coefficient by either passive and active high-lift systems. It includes slotless and slotted high-lift flaps, active and passive vortex generating devices, boundary and circulation control, and powered lift. Describing methods that are used to evaluate and design high-lift systems in an aerodynamic sense, the book briefly covers numerical as well as experimental simulation methods. It also includes a chapter on the aerodynamic design of high-lift systems. FEATURES Provides an understanding of the physics of flight during takeoff and landing from aerodynamics to flight performance and from simulation to design Discusses the physical limits of lift generation, giving the lift generation potential Concentrates on the specifics of high-lift aerodynamics to provide a first insight Analyzes aircraft needs to improve performance during takeoff, approach, and landing Focuses on civil transport aircraft applications but also includes the associated physics that apply to all aircraft This book is intended for graduate students in aerospace programs studying advanced aerodynamics and aircraft design. It also serves as a professional reference for practicing aerospace and mechanical engineers who are working on aircraft design issues related to takeoff and landing.

Book Synopsis An Experimental Investigation of an Airfoil Optimized for High Lift by : Richard E. Walters
Download or read book An Experimental Investigation of an Airfoil Optimized for High Lift written by Richard E. Walters and published by . This book was released on 1974 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was performed on an airfoil optimized for maximum lift. The airfoil shape was designed from an optimum pressure distribution using a calculus of variation technique. The purpose of the investigation was to evaluate the validity of the method of design of the airfoil, and to determine what type of differences existed, if any, in the theoretical and experimental results. The airfoil was tested at a Reynolds number approximating the design Reynolds number of 1,000,000. The airfoil angle of attack was varied in 2 deg increments from 0 deg to 12 deg. At each angle of attack, three blowing rates were used for slots installed on the model end plates. Data recorded for each test run consisted of the airfoil static pressure distribution, static and total pressures from a wake traverse, atmospheric pressure and temperature, and the tunnel temperature. Normal and chordwise force coefficients were obtained from the static pressure data. Using the true angles of attack from potential flow theory, lift and pressure drag coefficients were found. Total drag coefficients were found from the wake traverse data. Increased blowing caused the experimental pressure coefficient distributions at higher angles of attack to come into close agreement with the theoretical pressure coefficient distribution, and resulted in increased lift and decreased drag. True two-dimensional flow was not maintained at the higher angles of attack, due at least in part to the test installation. (Author).
