Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic History of Ireland in the Eighteenth Century In one sense the eighteenth century is an easy period to treat historically, as the beginning and end of the cen tury were marked by /events which may be truly termed epochs. The seventeenth century did not merge gradually into the eighteenth, nor the eighteenth into the nineteenth. On the contrary, the former two were definitely separated by the Revolution, and the latter two by the Union. The events which marked the years between the Restoration and the beginning of the century were such as to destroy the old condition of things; Irish commerce was successfully attacked; the old popular land system was finally abolished; and the Irish people were reduced to a condition not far removed from slavery. The old economic state had disappeared, and a new one was about to begin. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Economic Case for Irish Independence Several causes have delayed the issue of this little book. First a Censor's hand interposed that not unreasonably detected no great love to its master. Then when he at length removed his interdiction, the stress of other things to do gave me little leisure to bring to date certain figures that had fallen behind time. In passing it now for publication it is only meces sary for me to say that for all figures outside Ireland or England I have relied on the latest issue of The Statesman's Year Book. For Ireland or England I have bravely relied on English official Returns; not that I suggest that any unnecessary reliance need be placed on those Returns, for many before me have complained of the arbitrary procedure of the calcula tion adopted in them in matters as between Ireland and England; but rather because no other figures are available, and it is certain that any argument by an Irishman based on those Returns is committed in advance to moderation. The Irish case can amply afford the moderation so wisely insisted on by imperial reckoners. I have sought to avoid reference to legislation or administration where it might be retorted that these were conditioned by the European War. Strictly that reference is of the essence of the argument. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Ireland MY endeavour in writing this little book has been to present a clear and impartial account of the chief features of Irish' History. In view of the notable gaps which exist in the scientific treatment of social and economic questions, I have purposely dealt mainly with political events. I have also intentionally neglected the important subjects of Celtic mythology and literature, as being beyond the scope of an elementary historical text book. A work of this kind is necessarily based upon secondary sources I have, therefore, appended a short list of those authorities to which I am indebted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the Commercial and Financial Relations Between England and Ireland, From the Period of the Restoration And its relations with England has certainly been unfavourable in its effects. I therefore welcome every attempt to set forth in an impartial manner the main features of Irish economic history, whether or not I agree with the Opinions of the author. There is scarcely any subject Of which we are more ignorant or the study Of which is more likely to correct extravagant views of British genius in the sphere Of economic statesmanship. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a cogent summary of the economic history of the Irish Free State/Republic of Ireland. It takes the Irish story from the 1920s right through to the present, providing an excellent case study of one of many European states which obtained independence during and after the First World War. The book covers the transition to protectionism and import substitution between the 1930s and the 1950s and the second major transition to trade liberalisation from the 1960s. In a wider European context, the Irish experience since EEC entry in 1973 was the most extreme European example of the achievement of industrialisation through foreign direct investment. The eager adoption of successive governments in recent decades of a neo-liberal economic model, more particularly de-regulation in banking and construction, has recently led the Republic of Ireland to the most extreme economic crash of any western society since the Great Depression.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here Ireland's premier economic historian and one of the leading authorities on the Great Irish Famine examines the most lethal natural disaster to strike Europe in the nineteenth century. Between the mid-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, the food source that we still call the Irish potato had allowed the fastest population growth in the whole of Western Europe. As vividly described in Ó Gráda's new work, the advent of the blight phytophthora infestans transformed the potato from an emblem of utility to a symbol of death by starvation. The Irish famine peaked in Black '47, but it brought misery and increased mortality to Ireland for several years. Central to Irish and British history, European demography, the world history of famines, and the story of American immigration, the Great Irish Famine is presented here from a variety of new perspectives. Moving away from the traditional narrative historical approach to the catastrophe, Ó Gráda concentrates instead on fresh insights available through interdisciplinary and comparative methods. He highlights several economic and sociological features of the famine previously neglected in the literature, such as the part played by traders and markets, by medical science, and by migration. Other topics include how the Irish climate, usually hospitable to the potato, exacerbated the failure of the crops in 1845-1847, and the controversial issue of Britain's failure to provide adequate relief to the dying Irish. Ó Gráda also examines the impact on urban Dublin of what was mainly a rural disaster and offers a critical analysis of the famine as represented in folk memory and tradition. The broad scope of this book is matched by its remarkable range of sources, published and archival. The book will be the starting point for all future research into the Irish famine.

It was accepted by Faulkner and is now generally ascribed to Swift.' I have never seen the separate original Imprint nor the original Dublin Edition of The Swearer's Bank.
