Book excerpt: The aim of this book was to analyze the economic and agricultural aspects of the implementation of soil conservation programmes and to suggest appropriate measures-instrument-combinations for efficient soil conservation as decision support for the implementation of soil conservation policies. Emphasis was given to the resource and institutional economics of soil conservation. The efficiency of policy options was analysed in a case study of a region in North-eastern Germany based on model calculations. The regional decision-support system MODAM (multi-objective decision support tool for agro-ecosystem management) was applied for the assessment of economic and environmental impacts of different policy options. The inclusion of transaction costs in this study helped to expand its scope of policy analysis.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil erosion has become a problem of crisis proportions in developing countries around the globe, and better approaches to land management are desperately needed. This book provides analytical frameworks to guide the creation and appraisal of soil erosion control programs. The authors discuss a broad range of important issues involved in designing and implementing more effective soil conservation programs. The book begins with a discussion of the physical and economic dimensions of soil erosion and an estimation of the extent of the problem. It then explains how to improve the evaluation of soil conservation programs by integrating scientific knowledge with economic methods and procedures. A series of practical illustrations graphically demonstrates the application of the concepts derived from the theory. The most important organizational, institutional, technical, and macroeconomic aspects of soil and land management appraisal are outlined, and the major elements of project or program design are also pinpointed and illustrated. Finally, the book suggests areas most in need of future research.

Book excerpt: This publication provides a reasoned discussion on why it is desirable to incorporate elements of farming systems development (FSD) in handling issues related to the new approach to soil conservation and land husbandry. A conceptual framework is developed for the incorporation of the FSD approach, and FSD techniques are outlined that could be useful in identifying, designing, testing and implementing relevent soil conservation strategies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: Long-term acreage retirement and conservation-oriented commodity programs have potential for increasing soil conservation while reducing surplus crop production. Current commodity programs tend to discourage conservation. Retirement of land eroding at the highest rates would save the most soil but cost the Government more than other retirement options. Retirement of surplus crop acres targeted to highly erodible land could be cost--effective for both conservation and commodity program objectives. Cross--compliance would not promise widespread conservation benefits and might reduce commodity program effectiveness, but compliance incentives and modest changes in commodity programs could complement other soil protection measures.

Book excerpt: Farming Systems Research has three core characteristics: it builds on systems thinking, it depends on the close collaboration between social and biophysical sciences, and it relies on participation to build co-learning processes. Farming Systems Research posits that to contribute towards sustainable rural development, both interdisciplinary collaborations and local actor engagement are needed. Together, they allow for changes in understanding and changes in practices. This book gives an overview of the insights generated in 20 years of Farming Systems Research. It retraces the emergence and development of Farming Systems Research in Europe, summarises the state-of-the-art for key areas, and provides an outlook on new explorations, especially those tackling the dynamic nature of farming systems and their interaction with the natural environment and the context of action.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can the United States meet demands for agricultural production while solving the broader range of environmental problems attributed to farming practices? National policymakers who try to answer this question confront difficult trade-offs. This book offers four specific strategies that can serve as the basis for a national policy to protect soil and water quality while maintaining U.S. agricultural productivity and competitiveness. Timely and comprehensive, the volume has important implications for the Clean Air Act and the 1995 farm bill. Advocating a systems approach, the committee recommends specific farm practices and new approaches to prevention of soil degradation and water pollution for environmental agencies. The volume details methods of evaluating soil management systems and offers a wealth of information on improved management of nitrogen, phosphorus, manure, pesticides, sediments, salt, and trace elements. Landscape analysis of nonpoint source pollution is also detailed. Drawing together research findings, survey results, and case examples, the volume will be of interest to federal, state, and local policymakers; state and local environmental and agricultural officials and other environmental and agricultural specialists; scientists involved in soil and water issues; researchers; and agricultural producers.
