Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fish Population and Aquatic Conditions in Polluted Waters in Louisiana The pollution problem in Louisiana, while under excel lent control and subject to stringent laws, is still far from solved. There is still much to be done toward determining the exact relationship between polluted waters and fish production, fish utilization and fishing success. The object of this study has been to devise a system of surveying polluted areas so that data needed to establish a workable effluent discharge compatable with acceptable fish manage ment may be maintained. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 10: April 1958 As strange as it may seem, frequently the reason for poor fishing in our fresh waters is too many fish. That is, the wrong kind of fish, with the most commonly too abundant species being the gizzard shad. Also occuring at times in. Large enough quantities to be a problem is the smaller relative of the gizzard shad, the threadfin shad. To a statement such as has been made above, the answer is usually given, how can you have too many fish? Well, it must be remembered that a body of water is capable of producing only a given amount of fish. This total production of the fish population is different for various bodies of water and is dependent upon the amount of basic nutrients which the body of water has available, indirectly, for the fish population. Therefore it follows that if a body of water can only produce so many fish and the more of these fish that are rough or trash fish then the smaller the amount of desirable fish which may be produced. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Louisiana Conservationist, Vol. 14: September-October, 1964 To most sportsmen, wildlife agents are those men who check to see that hunters and fisher men have valid licenses and have not harvested more than the legal share of game or game fish. They also patrol both marsh and wooded areas to make certain that no hunting is done out of season. It is well known that close attention is paid to commercial fisheries - running the gamut from fresh water to salt water operations. Commercial operations must be carried out in a legal manner and it is the duty of wildlife agents to enforce all laws regarding the taking of commercial sea foods and commercial fresh water fish. It would be well to point out at this time that enforcement of state laws governing the taking of both commercial seafoods and fresh water fish is not founded on what might be called punitive thinking. In reality, Louisiana's aquatic resources, both inland and coastal, are part of the overall economy of the State. If our fisheries resources are not kept as renewable sources of income, over-exploitation would result in hardships not only on the thou sands of individuals and families depend upon annual income from vast fisheries resources but upon numerous retail outlets handling everything from consumer goods to equipment and supplies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Invasive non-native species are a major threat to global biodiversity. Often introduced accidentally through international travel or trade, they invade and colonize new habitats, often with devastating consequences for the local flora and fauna. Their environmental impacts can range from damage to resource production (e.g. agriculture and forestry) and infrastructure (e.g. buildings, road and water supply), to human health. They consequently can have major economic impacts. It is a priority to prevent their introduction and spread, as well as to control them. Freshwater ecosystems are particularly at risk from invasions and are landscape corridors that facilitate the spread of invasives. This book reviews the current state of knowledge of the most notable global invasive freshwater species or groups, based on their severity of economic impact, geographic distribution outside of their native range, extent of research, and recognition of the ecological severity of the impact of the species by the IUCN. As well as some of the very well-known species, the book also covers some invasives that are emerging as serious threats. Examples covered include a range of aquatic and riparian plants, insects, molluscs, crustacea, fish, amphibians, reptiles and mammals, as well as some major pathogens of aquatic organisms. The book also includes overview chapters synthesizing the ecological impact of invasive species in fresh water and summarizing practical implications for the management of rivers and other freshwater habitats.

The first step is to reconstruct a sample of what we had to begin with." The concept he expressedâ€"restorationâ€"is defined in this comprehensive new volume that examines the prospects for repairing the damage society has done to the nation's aquatic resources: lakes, rivers and streams, and wetlands. Restoration of Aquatic Ecosystems outlines a national strategy for aquatic restoration, with practical recommendations, and features case studies of aquatic restoration activities around the country. The committee examines: Key concepts and techniques used in restoration. Common factors in successful restoration efforts. Threats to the health of the nation's aquatic ecosystems. Approaches to evaluation before, during, and after a restoration project. The emerging specialties of restoration and landscape ecology.
