Book excerpt: African American youth residing in high risk neighborhoods, characterized by violence, crime, and poverty have been shown to be at increased risk for exposure to violence and psychological symptoms, and there has been little investigation of mediating processes that might explain these association. Due to the poor current state of mental health of low income ethnic minority youth, it is important to investigate the role of nondisclosure as a risk factor affecting psychological outcomes in urban African American adolescents from high risk neighborhoods. Nondisclosure among urban African American adolescents from neighborhoods affected by violence is associated with adverse psychological outcomes and can serve as a barrier to adult intervention and protection. Strong relationships with parents and/or extended family and community member may promote disclosure and better psychological adjustment, and buffer the adverse effects of violence experience by adolescents. This study tested conceptual models in which adolescents' nondisclosure to adults mediates the relation between community exposure to violence (CETV) and internalizing and externalizing symptoms. In addition, moderated mediation analysis were conducted in order to test the hypotheses that parent-child attachment and social support from extended kin and non-kin adults would attenuate the hypothesized relations among variables proposed in the mediation models. Structural equation modeling was used to conduct mediation and moderated mediation analysis. SEM analysis revealed that nondisclosure fully mediated the relation between CETV and internalizing symptoms, and partially mediated the relation between CETV and externalizing symptoms. However, calculation of decomposition of total effects, revealed that nondisclosure did not fully account for the relation between CETV and internalizing symptoms. Results of moderated mediation path analysis suggested that parent-child attachment and social support did not moderate the mediating role of nondisclosure between CETV and internalizing and externalizing symptoms. This research provides empirical support regarding the role of nondisclosure in urban African American adolescents. Particularly, this study revealed the disadvantages of adolescents' nondisclosure to adults, and provided insight about development and relationship factors influencing adolescent's nondisclosure to adults. The findings from this study have implications for intervention and prevention programs aimed to improve adolescent and adult communications and to minimize the effects of CETV.

Book excerpt: This dissertation used the transactional-ecological framework along with principles from positive youth development literature to examine naturally occurring individual and contextual factors that promote thriving among African American adolescents. Specifically, this study examined how religiosity, religious support, racial identity, and communalism relate to thriving. This study also assessed the negative influence of stressors on thriving in order to understand how thriving manifests in the context of risk factors. This cross-sectional study included 152 youth participants who were surveyed at five Black churches on the south side of Chicago. Structural equation modeling was used to assess whether the proposed model fit the data. Based on the results, it was concluded that religiosity, religious support, and communalism are significantly related to thriving among African American adolescents. Neither exposure to violence nor racial discrimination was significantly associated with thriving in this study. Findings from this study have implications for future theorizing, research, and practice. Overall, the approach to and findings of this study make a significant contribution to literature on positive developmental outcomes for African American adolescents.

The high juvenile delinquency rearrest rate is a problem in Fulton County, Georgia, which is of significant concern. The juvenile justice system has gained acceptance to address and reduce youth offenders' high rearrest rates (Olateru-Olagbegi, 2020). However, there is a lack of research regarding African American male adults and juvenile justice probationers' perceptions of rearrests' factors. A qualitative study that explored and examined the phenomenon and factors that contribute to juvenile rearrest or recidivism through the perceptions of African American male adults who were previously juvenile delinquents and current young probation officers conducting the interview is this author. Ecological systems theory was in use as the theoretical foundation for guiding this research. This qualitative study showed that the juvenile system's current probation guidelines in Fulton County, Georgia, are unsuccessful. Results indicated that reliable factors for juvenile delinquency rearrest or recidivism include (a) a lack of juvenile and parent accountability; (b) environment; (c) peers; and (d) family dynamics. The juvenile justice system, human services professionals, voluntary organization leaders in the field, and policymakers could use findings from the study to advocate for developing programs and policies that will reduce juvenile delinquency recidivism (Olateru-Olagbegi, 2020).I know Koya Olateru-Olagbegi for over thirty years as a tennis Hall of Famer and a business owner; the study into the African American youth and minorities rearrest is a must read for educational purpose and policy decision implementation. Interpersonal violence has a dramatic impact on the health of American youth(s). Homicides, the salient and easily measured impact, account for one of every five deaths among youths, ages fifteen to twenty-four and 58 per cent of deaths among black males fifteen to nineteen. From 1985 through 1990, firearm homicide rates increased 141 per cent for all fifteen-to-nineteen year olds and nearly tripled among black males in this age group. Positive Adolescent Choices Training (P.A.C.T.) designed specifically for African-American male and female adolescents, applies cognitive training methods in small group settings in six skill areas. Elementary school teachers (preferably), select students for participation based on social skill deficiencies, problems with aggressive behavior, or history of victimization. Training is provided twice a week in fifty minute sessions for half of the school year. PACT volunteers will facilitate the training and are aided by a high-quality video tape that demonstrates the skills in realistic situations.

The findings also suggest the dynamic function of some assets. The discussion focused on that dynamic function that some community assets have in moderating and/or mediating the presence and effect of other individual and community assets.
