Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H.A. Cody’s An Apostle of the North, originally published in 1908, captures perfectly the zeal of the 19th century missionary and tells the story of a man called to do God’s work in the Diocese of Athabasca in the most northern regions of Canada. Bishop William Carpenter Bompas was a difficult man, cantankerous, stubborn, and more than a little eccentric. He carried on his shoulders the deep spirituality of his own faith, the assumptions of his background, and the cultural aggressiveness of the Victorian age. He was a church leader who often disagreed with his church and ignored its advice. Bompas’s life in the North offers insights into the compelling force of religion and faith, one of the most pervasive forces in human experience, capable of transforming people, creating conflict, spreading hope, motivating entire nations, and, as history has shown, making horrible and damaging mistakes. In a new Introduction, historians William Morrison and Ken Coates examine Bompas’s career, exploring themes central to the history of the church in Canada and to aboriginal-newcomer relations.

Book excerpt: Known today as "the other speaker at Gettysburg," Edward Everett had a distinguished and illustrative career at every level of American politics from the 1820s through the Civil War. In this new biography, Matthew Mason argues that Everett's extraordinarily well-documented career reveals a complex man whose shifting political opinions, especially on the topic of slavery, illuminate the nuances of Northern Unionism. In the case of Everett--who once pledged to march south to aid slaveholders in putting down slave insurrections--Mason explores just how complex the question of slavery was for most Northerners, who considered slavery within a larger context of competing priorities that alternately furthered or hindered antislavery actions. By charting Everett's changing stance toward slavery over time, Mason sheds new light on antebellum conservative politics, the complexities of slavery and its related issues for reform-minded Americans, and the ways in which secession turned into civil war. As Mason demonstrates, Everett's political and cultural efforts to preserve the Union, and the response to his work from citizens and politicians, help us see the coming of the Civil War as a three-sided, not just two-sided, contest.

Book excerpt: Between 1901 and 1907, a broad coalition of Protestant churches sought to expel newly elected Reed Smoot from the Senate, arguing that as an apostle in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Smoot was a lawbreaker and therefore unfit to be a lawmaker. The resulting Senate investigative hearing featured testimony on every peculiarity of Mormonism, especially its polygamous family structure. The Smoot hearing ultimately mediated a compromise between Progressive Era Protestantism and Mormonism and resolved the nation's long-standing "Mormon Problem." On a broader scale, Kathleen Flake shows how this landmark hearing provided the occasion for the country--through its elected representatives, the daily press, citizen petitions, and social reform activism--to reconsider the scope of religious free exercise in the new century. Flake contends that the Smoot hearing was the forge in which the Latter-day Saints, the Protestants, and the Senate hammered out a model for church-state relations, shaping for a new generation of non-Protestant and non-Christian Americans what it meant to be free and religious. In addition, she discusses the Latter-day Saints' use of narrative and collective memory to retain their religious identity even as they changed to meet the nation's demands.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Apostle of the North: Memoirs of the Right Reverend William Carpenter Bompas, D. First Bishop of Athabaska, 1874-1884, First Bishop of Mackenzie River, 1884-1891, First Bishop of Selkirk (Yukon) 1891-1906 It has been a great joy to me to learn that a life of my dear friend, Bishop Bompas, is being prepared for publication. Quite apart from the pleasure which the perusal of the record of his life will afford to a large circle of friends, it is, I consider, in the interests of missions that the Christian public should know something more of the heroic work of that great "Apostle of the North." That work was carried on in the seclusion of a prolonged isolation in the wilds of a land which was entirely shut out, except at rare intervals, from communication with the rest of the world. The Bishop loved to have it so. He had no care to speak to galleries or to come to the front. On the contrary, he retired before an approaching civilization, and when he saw it coming he retreated into "regions beyond." His first episcopate covered what is now comprised in the districts of Athabasca, Mackenzie River, and Yukon. Excerpt: ... vi the work and the workman The work in Red River--Begun in 1820--The Hudson'i Bay Company--Their Posts--Diet of the men--Indians drifting Southward--Seeking Religious truth--Sending Missionaries to keep the hunters in the woods--James Evans chosen--Hit work at St. Clair Mission--His trip to New York. In i820 missionary work was begun in the Red River settlement by the Church of England society. To the Rev. John West, the founder of that mission, the chief said in an address on the occasion of the commencement of the work: " There are a great many trees to be cut down and roots to remove before the path will be made clear to walk in." The work, however, prospered at the Red River, not many miles from the place where it enters into Lake Winnipeg. Here has long flourished a most interesting and successful mission. Here for many years the venerable Archdeacon Cowley lived, and was gladdened by the sight of a prosperous community of converted and civilised Indians around him. To other regions of the vast country, to the north and west, missions have since extended, until now nearly all of the people have heard the glad tidings of salvation. For over two centuries the great Hudson's Bay Company have been trading with the Indians, The Hudson's Bay Company Their goods brought out from England are bartered for furs. York Factory on the Hudson's Bay, and Norway House, about twenty miles north of the northern end of Lake Winnipeg, were two of their great distributing centres for goods from the interior posts, some of them three thousand miles inland. From the Indians there residing, they expected not only large supplies of furs, but in addition they looked to them to furnish large numbers of hardy boatmen, upon whom they could rely at all times...
