Book excerpt: Amphibian Diaries is a Field Guide for Truth-Seekers. A little green stowaway, named BP, in the author’s baggage teaches six principles for recognizing Truth. These principles enable genuine, interpersonal dialogue while searching for personal significance. The reader is invited to join the LifeBet, inspired by the philosophy of Blaise Pascal, which states that all of us live our lives by a bet we have made--there is a God, or there is no God. LifeBet participants commit to seven discussions about foundational life issues: Origin, Meaning, Morality, and Destiny. BP and the author argue that these high-level conversations, while difficult, are essential. They are made practical and effective with SEARCH, an acronym for the six principles: We all have a Soul with a hole, a need to be fulfilled by a significant and secure life. We have an intrinsic Expectation of satisfaction that we cling to by faith. We express our beliefs in terms of Answers to life’s ultimate and necessary questions: Origin, Meaning, Destiny, and Morality. Our Reason to believe is always a matter of logical, empirical, and practical variables. Our beliefs are an expression of our view of the Correspondence between our ideas about reality and reality itself. Intrapersonal, interpersonal, and inspirational Humility is required for the entire conversation Life and God. Readers have access to a website with concise and insightful support materials as well as connection for interaction with the author and others: www.AmphibianDiaries.com. The book, the website, and the concept are all designed to move the reader in the direction of hope in a gentle and respectful manner. It presumes that if people genuinely seek Truth they will find themselves in the freedom of God’s love.

Book excerpt: I was searching for meaning when I found myself in the company of a wise, talking frog. He gave me six, guiding principles for the search. What I learned, I gladly pass on to you: There is a hole in every soul, deep calling to deep, a thirsty cry for significance of The Good Life. And, only The Truth of Love will satisfy it. Ultimately, each of us hopes by faith in our answers to the big questions of life. Are our answers reasonable, empirical, relevant? Have we even reflected on our thoughts, and tested them? Do they correspond to reality? Will we be humble enough to genuinely search authentic Truth? Will we allow our current beliefs to be displaced when the Truth presents? Such is the challenge of the frog, which I have called, Amphibian Diaries; a field guide for Truth seekers. Join the quest. Wisdom calculates the wager of the inevitable Life Bet. This is critical stuff, and typically heavy... but the clever frog-my friend B.P.-is an excellent storyteller. If you're like me, you'll find yourself delightfully encouraged and empowered in the direction of real Life and Love.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amphibian Conservation is the fourth in the series of Synopses of Conservation Evidence, linked to the online resource www.ConservationEvidence.com. This synopsis is part of the Conservation Evidence project and provides a useful resource for conservationists. It forms part of a series designed to promote a more evidence-based approach to biodiversity conservation. Others in the series include bee, bird, farmland and bat conservation and many others are in preparation. Approximately 32% of the 7,164+ amphibian species are currently threatened with extinction and at least 43% of species are declining. Despite this, until recently amphibians and their conservation had received little attention. Although work is now being carried out to conserve many species, often it is not adequately documented. This book brings together and summarises the available scientific evidence and experience relevant to the practical conservation of amphibians. The authors consulted an international group of amphibian experts and conservationists to produce a thorough summary of what is known, or not known, about the effectiveness of amphibian conservation actions across the world. "The book is packed with literature summaries and citations; a veritable information goldmine for graduate students and researchers. It also admirably provides decision makers with a well-researched resource of proven interventions that can be employed to stem/reverse the decline of amphibian populations." -John G Palis, Bulletin of the Chicago Herpetological Society

This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 1071 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Includes over 90 maps, charts and illustrations. His nickname was “Terrible Turner.” He was, according to one ensign who served with him prior to World War II, “the meanest man I ever saw, and the most competent naval officer I ever served with.” He led the successful amphibious attacks on Guadalcanal, Makin, Kwajalein, Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tinian, and Guam. He was Admiral Richmond Kelly Turner, one of the key figures in America’s defeat of Japan. In this fascinating and comprehensive biography, Vice Admiral George C. Dyer documents the tough and fearless leadership of Admiral Turner, his astonishing success in meeting some of the toughest challenges in the history of amphibious warfare, and detailed descriptions of the ships and men who fought under him. More than just a biography, The Amphibians Came to Conquer is a carefully documented history, both strategic and tactical, of the major campaigns in the Pacific from Guadalcanal to Okinawa, providing a wealth of information on how Terrible Turner and the men he commanded conquered island after island against a tough and determined foe. In an astonishing tribute to the tenacity of Turner and his men, a February 21, 1945 Japanese broadcast said: “The true nature of an alligator is that once he bites into something, he will not let go. Turner’s nature is also like this.” This remarkable book belongs in the library of any serious student of the war in the Pacific

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The planning that allowed for the successful amphibious landings at the end of World War II actually began during the 1880s as the Marine Corps sought to define its role in the new Steel Navy. Officers braved skepticism, indifference and outright opposition to develop an amphibious warfare doctrine, with each service contributing. From the 1898 war with Spain through the disastrous 1915 Australian landing to the successful World War II assaults in the Pacific and northwest France, this chronological history explores the successes and failures pivotal to the concept of amphibious warfare through the lives and careers of fourteen officers instrumental to its development. Profiles include General George S. Patton, Jr.; Rear Admiral Walter C. Ansel, USN; Lieutenant General John A. Lejeune, USMC; Admiral William Sims, USN; and Colonel Robert W. Huntington, USMC.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PT boats loom large in the popular imagination of World War II. In March 1942, a PT boat evacuated Gen. Douglas MacArthur, his family, and top staff from the Philippines, which inspired the war movie They Were Expendable, directed by John Ford and starring John Wayne. John F. Kennedy became a war hero while commanding PT-109, which collided with a Japanese destroyer and was sunk in August 1943. But the story of PT boats has never been told in the depth and detail that their exemplary service deserves. Naval historian C. J. Skamarakas uses one Pacific PT boat squadron to tell the story of PT boats in action in World War II. Eighty feet long, PT boats were designed to launch torpedoes against enemy ships five and ten times their own size. But defects in the torpedoes and the boats’ speed and maneuverability ultimately shifted the boats’ mission to patrolling and breaking up Japanese shipping and reinforcements. In the waters of the Southwest Pacific as part of MacArthur’s offensives in New Guinea and the Philippines, Motor Torpedo Boat Squadron 25 completed these missions and also executed other operations for which they weren’t specifically trained, including inserting commandos behind enemy lines, air-sea rescue, raids on enemy positions, reconnaissance of potential sites for amphibious landings, coordination of air strikes in support of ground forces, meetings with guerrilla leaders, recovery of prisoners of war, diversionary activities, and psychological operations. Today we would call many of their missions “special ops.” The Japanese called PT boats “mosquitoes” and “devil boats.” The Devil Boats recounts the unique contributions of one motor torpedo boat squadron and through it tells the story of PT boats in the Pacific War. With drama and excitement, as well as careful attention to detail, the book fills a void in the history of the U.S. Navy in World War II.
