This book was released on 2016-07-18 with total page 215 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Amorphous silicon solar cell technology has evolved considerably since the first amorphous silicon solar cells were made at RCA Laboratories in 1974. Scien tists working in a number of laboratories worldwide have developed improved alloys based on hydrogenated amorphous silicon and microcrystalline silicon. Other scientists have developed new methods for growing these thin films while yet others have developed new photovoltaic (PV) device structures with im proved conversion efficiencies. In the last two years, several companies have constructed multi-megawatt manufacturing plants that can produce large-area, multijunction amorphous silicon PV modules. A growing number of people be lieve that thin-film photovoltaics will be integrated into buildings on a large scale in the next few decades and will be able to make a major contribution to the world's energy needs. In this book, Ruud E. I. Schropp and Miro Zeman provide an authoritative overview of the current status of thin film solar cells based on amorphous and microcrystalline silicon. They review the significant developments that have occurred during the evolution of the technology and also discuss the most im portant recent innovations in the deposition of the materials, the understanding of the physics, and the fabrication and modeling of the devices.

This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 588 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Today’s solar cell multi-GW market is dominated by crystalline silicon (c-Si) wafer technology, however new cell concepts are entering the market. One very promising solar cell design to answer these needs is the silicon hetero-junction solar cell, of which the emitter and back surface field are basically produced by a low temperature growth of ultra-thin layers of amorphous silicon. In this design, amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) constitutes both „emitter“ and „base-contact/back surface field“ on both sides of a thin crystalline silicon wafer-base (c-Si) where the electrons and holes are photogenerated; at the same time, a-Si:H passivates the c-Si surface. Recently, cell efficiencies above 23% have been demonstrated for such solar cells. In this book, the editors present an overview of the state-of-the-art in physics and technology of amorphous-crystalline heterostructure silicon solar cells. The heterojunction concept is introduced, processes and resulting properties of the materials used in the cell and their heterointerfaces are discussed and characterization techniques and simulation tools are presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes work for this reporting period under a 3-year program to advance Energy Conversion Device's (ECD) roll-to-roll, triple-junction photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing technologies, to reduce the module production costs, to increase the stabilized module performance, and to expand commercial production capacity utilizing ECD technology. The specific 3-year goal is to developadvanced large-scale manufacturing technology incorporating ECD's earlier research advances with the capability of producing modules with stable 11% efficiency at a cost of approximately $1.00 per peak watt. Major accomplishments during this reporting period include (1) the design, construction. and testing of a continuous roll-to-roll multipurpose amorphous silicon alloy solar cell depositionmachine that incorporates improvements necessary to obtain higher efficiency solar cells; (2) development of a photothermal deflection spectroscopy (PDS) technique for evaluating back-reflector systems; (3) the development of an improved textured Ag/ZnO back-reflector system demonstrating 25% gain in Jsc over previous textured AI back-reflector systems; and (4) the design of a serpentine webcontinuous roll-to-roll deposition chamber.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The world of today must face up to two contradictory energy problems: on the one hand, there is the sharply growing consumer demand in countries such as China and India. On the other hand, natural resources are dwindling. Moreover, many of those countries which still possess substantial gas and oil supplies are politically unstable. As a result, renewable natural energy sources have received great attention. Among these, solar-cell technology is one of the most promising candidates. However, there still remains the problem of the manufacturing costs of such cells. Many attempts have been made to reduce the production costs of conventional solar cells (manufactured from monocrystalline silicon using diffusion methods) by instead using cheaper grades of silicon, and simpler pn-junction fabrication. That is the hero of this book; the heterojunction solar cell.

Book Synopsis U.S. Amorphous Silicon Research Project by : E. Sabisky
Download or read book U.S. Amorphous Silicon Research Project written by E. Sabisky and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States National Energy Policy Plan calls for a stable supply of energy at reasonable prices using a balanced mix of conventional and renewable energy resources. Photovoltaic conversion of sunlight to electric power can help to achieve this goal-provided that the relatively high cost associated with this technology at present can be reduced. The cost-competitiveness of promising new energy sources such as photovoltaics is of primary importance to their eventual deployment in the energy mix of the future. A serious effort is being carried out in this country to develop thin-film amorphous silicon technology, a leading candidate for cost-effective photovoltaic power applications. Progress to date in research, development, and now commercialization of amorphous silicon photovoltaics has surprised even its strongest proponents. To continue progress in amorphous silicon research and development, the photovoltaic energy technology division of the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) established in 1983 the Amorphous Silicon Research Project (ASRP) at the Solar Energy Research Institute (SERI). The ASRP office was given the responsibility for developing and implementing an Amorphous Silicon Research Plan. This plan addresses amorphous silicon thin-film research and development for five years (FY 1984 through FY 1988).

This book was released on 2011-11-28 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Among various applications, solar cells for photovoltaic solar energy and thin-film transistors for flat-panel display have been the two major driving forces for research and development of thin-film silicon materials and devices. In the last few years, the thin-film silicon community has mainly focused on thin-film silicon solar cells to address the issues of efficiency, manufacturing capability and manufacturing cost. This volume includes sixty-eight papers presented at Symposium A, "Amorphous and Polycrystalline Thin-Film Silicon Science and Technology-2011," which took place April 25-29, during the 2011 MRS Spring Meeting in San Francisco, California. The symposium covered the science and technology of thin-film silicon based materials, reviewed recent progress, addressed the scientific and technical issues in the field, and this year, focused sessions were held on the topic of solar cell efficiency.
