Book Synopsis The Origins of Graphic Design in America, 1870-1920 by : Burton Raffel
Download or read book The Origins of Graphic Design in America, 1870-1920 written by Burton Raffel and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1997-01-01 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the time the phrase "graphic design" first appeared in print in 1922, design professionals in America had already created a discipline combining visual art with mass communication. In this book, Ellen Mazur Thomson examines for the first time the early development of the graphic design profession. It has been thought that graphic design emerged as a profession only when European modernism arrived in America in the 1930s, yet Thomson shows that the practice of graphic design began much earlier. Shortly after the Civil War, when the mechanization of printing and reproduction technology transformed mass communication, new design practices emerged. Thomson investigates the development of these practices from 1870 to 1920, a time when designers came to recognize common interests and create for themselves a professional identity. What did the earliest designers do, and how did they learn to do it? What did they call themselves? How did they organize them-selves and their work? Drawing on an array of original period documents, the author explores design activities in the printing, type founding, advertising, and publishing industries, setting the early history of graphic design in the context of American social history.

Book Synopsis No Art Without Craft by : Irene Tichenor
Download or read book No Art Without Craft written by Irene Tichenor and published by David R. Godine Publisher. This book was released on 2005 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "But it is his skill as a historian as well as a printer that endears his name to the student of typography. His four volumes on the practice of typography are considered classics. In an age when few American scholars were examining early printed books, he made significant scholarly contributions to the study of incunables. When the Grolier Club was founded in 1884, it was not surprising that, as New York's most illustrious printer, he was asked to be one of the founding members and to provide much the Club's early printing."--BOOK JACKET.
Book Synopsis American/Medieval Goes North by : Gillian R. Overing
Download or read book American/Medieval Goes North written by Gillian R. Overing and published by V&R Unipress. This book was released on 2019-10-07 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "One of the great virtues of American/Medieval Goes North is ist wide range of contributors with fascinatingly diverse relationships to the main terms of analysis. There are academic scholars, poets, filmmakers, tribal elders, teachers at various levels; there are Indigenous people, people from settler colonial cultures, expats, immigrants. Their analytic and imaginative encounters with the North catch at the intensely symbolic and political charge of that locus. At a time when Medieval Studies cannot afford to ignore the period's popular uptake – cannot continue with business as usual in the face of white supremacists' brazen appropriations of the Middle Ages – this volume points to new possibilities for grappling with the uneasy relationships between the 'American' and the 'medieval'." – Prof Carolyn Dinshaw, New York University

Book excerpt: Head, Heart and Hand is published to accompany the exhibition of the same name, the first major assemblage of objects produced at the Roycroft community in upstate New York under the leadership of the charismatic Elbert Hubbard. A consummate entrepreneur, Hubbard successfully married capitalism with basic tenets of the Arts and Crafts ideology. Although clearly influenced by the work of European designers, the Roycrofters sought to personify the best aspects of American character in their work, which is strong, spare, and often surprisingly refined.
