Book Synopsis American National Security Policy by : John T. Fishel
Download or read book American National Security Policy written by John T. Fishel and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2017-02-15 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Security policy is a key factor not only of domestic politics in the U.S., but also of foreign relations and global security. This text sets to explain the process of security policy making in the United States by looking at all the elements that shape it, from institutions and legislation to policymakers themselves and historical precedents. To understand national security policy, the book first needs to address the way national security policy makers see the world. It shows that they generally see it in realist terms where the state is a single rational actor pursuing its national interest. It then focuses on how legislative authorities enable and constrain these policy makers before looking at the organizational context in which policies are made and implemented. This means examining the legal authorities that govern how the system functions, such as the Constitution and the National Security Act of 1947, as well as the various governmental institutions whose capabilities either limit or allow execution, such as the CIA, NSA, etc. Next, the text analyzes the processes and products of national security policy making, such as reports, showing how they differ from administration to administration. Lastly, a series of case studies illustrate the challenges of implementing and developing policy. These span the post-Cold war period to the present, and include the Panama crisis, Somalia, the Balkans Haiti, the Iraq wars, and Afghanistan. By combining both the theory and process, this textbook reveals all aspects of the making of national security policy in United States from agenda setting to the successes and failures of implementation.

Book Synopsis Nuclear Threats and Security Challenges by : Samuel Apikyan
Download or read book Nuclear Threats and Security Challenges written by Samuel Apikyan and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the dissolution of the Soviet Union the nuclear threats facing the world are constantly evolving and have grown more complex since the end of the Cold War. The diversion of complete weapon systems or nuclear material to rogue nations and terrorist organizations has increased. The events of the past years have proved the necessity to reevaluate these threats on a level never before considered. In recognition that no single country possesses all of the answers to the critical scientific, institutional and legal questions associated with combating nuclear and radiological terrorism, the NATO Advanced Research Workshop on “Preparedness for Nuclear and Radiological Threats” and this proceeding was structured to promote wide-ranging, multi-national exploration of critical technology needs and underlying scientific challenges to reducing the threat of nuclear/radiological terrorism; to illustrate through country-specific presentations how resulting technologies were used in national programs; and to outline the role of legal, policy and institutional frameworks in countering nuclear/ radiological terrorism. One key outcome of this book is better understanding of the interdependent contributions from across the international community of the scientific and technological components and the legal, policy and institutional components to combating nuclear and radiological threats.

Book Synopsis The National Security Doctrines of the American Presidency by : Lamont Colucci
Download or read book The National Security Doctrines of the American Presidency written by Lamont Colucci and published by Praeger. This book was released on 2012-08-08 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fundamental driver of American national security and U.S. foreign policy are the undercurrents of American grand strategy represented by presidential national security doctrines. There has been a dearth of work on all of the doctrines of the American presidency and, worse yet, an incomplete understanding of how these doctrines continue to shape policy. Further, recognition of this need for both doctrine and grand strategy can assist the United States in guiding the nation through the coming storms and tribulations. We are witness to the second presidential campaign in a row where issues of national security are rarely mentioned, with no mention of grand strategy at all. There is an economic recession, which has inclined the American electorate toward inward thinking, and they have grown fearful or resentful of what some in the media call foreign adventures. There is also naturally war weariness, primarily caused by a lack of grand strategy implementation that has prolonged conflicts that should have been resolved earlier. Iraq and Afghanistan's battlefield environment could have been long over had the United States fully utilized the historic grand strategy themes outlined in this work. The main job of the president is not jobs, or education, or social security -- it is, was, and always will be, national security.
