Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Grasses are the world’s most important plants. They are the dominant species over large parts of the earth’s land surface, a fact that is reflected in the many different words that exist for grasslands, words such as prairie, veldt, palouse, and pampas to mention just a few. As a group, grasses are of major ecological importance, as soil binders and providers of shelter and food for wild animals, both large and small. Some grasses, such as wheat, rice, corn, barley, rye, tef, and sugar cane are major sources of calories for humans and their livestock; others, primarily bamboos, are used for construction, tools, paper, and fabric. More recently, the seed catalogs that tantalize gardeners each winter have borne witness to an increasing appreciation of the aesthetic value of grasses. The Manual of Grasses for North America is designed as a successor to the classic volume by Hitchcock and Chase. It reflects current taxonomic thought and includes keys, illustrations, and distribution maps for the nearly 900 native and 400 introduced species that have been found in North America north of Mexico. In addition, it presents keys and illustrations for several species that are known only in cultivation or are of major agricultural significance, either as progenitors of bread wheat and corn or as a major threat to North American agriculture because of their ability to hybridize with crop species. The Manual is a major reference work for grasses that will retain its value for many years.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects boast incredible diversity, and this book treats an important component of the western insect biota that has not been summarized before—moths and their plant relationships. There are about 8,000 named species of moths in our region, and although most are unnoticed by the public, many attract attention when their larvae create economic damage: eating holes in woolens, infesting stored foods, boring into apples, damaging crops and garden plants, or defoliating forests. In contrast to previous North American moth books, this volume discusses and illustrates about 25% of the species in every family, including the tiny species, making this the most comprehensive volume in its field. With this approach it provides access to microlepidoptera study for biologists as well as amateur collectors. About 2,500 species are described and illustrated, including virtually all moths of economic importance, summarizing their morphology, taxonomy, adult behavior, larval biology, and life cycles.

Book excerpt: Vegetation of the alpine zone of eight mountain ranges in southwestern Montana was classified using IWINSPAN, DECORAN, and STRATA-algorithms embedded within the U.S. Forest Service Northern Region's ECADS (ecological classification and description system) program. Quantitative estimates of vegetation and soil attributes were sampled from 138 plots. Vegetation composition, structure, productivity, associated soil features, and landscape positions are described for the 23 recognized community types that include wetland, snowbed, cushion plant, turf, and grassland physiognomic types. Field identification of community types is facilitated through the inclusion of a diagnostic indicator species-based dichotomous key. Management related obsenrations are posited for this regional alpine zone and for particular vegetation types.

Book excerpt: Mountain Geomorphology - Integrating Earth Systemspresents the papers of the 32nd Annual Binghamton Geomorphology Symposium, held in 2001 in advance of the United Nations-designated '2002 International Year of Mountains'.The three co-editors have collectively worked in mountain environments for over 70 years, and brought together internationally recognized experts in mountain geomorphology from 7 nations presenting research on mountain processes from around the world, including the USA, Canada, China, Europe, and South America. The volume utilizes Earth Systems as a unifying and organizing theme, examining the interactions of the four Earth "spheres" (Lithosphere, Biosphere, Atmosphere, and Hydrosphere) in the context of geomorphic processes in mountain environments. The volume is also a "Festschrift" in honor of Professor John D. "Jack" Vitek, long-time editor of Geomorphology and an outstanding mentor to each of the three co-editors. Papers presented in the volume represent cutting-edge examinations of mountain landforms, geomorphic processes in mountains, and the application of advanced remote sensing and Geographic Information Science technologies for the study of mountain geomorphology. The book should be of interest to all geomorphologists, and to physical geographers and geologists interested in mountain environments. Mountain Geomorphology - Integrating Earth Systemsis the only book of its kind, and stands as a testament to the importance of mountains as locations for studying the interaction of geomorphic processes within an Earth Systems perspective.

Book excerpt: The flora of the Rocky Mountains is spectacular, displaying its changing aspects throughout the growing season. As the snow cover melts back up the mountain slopes, the wildflowers spread their carpet through the forests, across the subalpine meadows and into the alpine regions. Kananaskis Country was established primarily for nature conservation and recreation. It contains three provincial parks with facilities for swimming, fishing, camping, hiking, and the general enjoyment of nature. The southernmost park, Peter Lougheed Provincial Park, includes several lakes and a large section of mountain wilderness with snow-covered peaks and glaciers. It is a "multi-use recreation area," offering the visitor a choice of hiking and interpretive trails. Sprawling across Alberta's prairies and foothills to the heights of the Rockies, Kananaskis Country is home to a particularly rich diversity of plant life. Plants of Kananaskis Country in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta describes in detail 423 of the most significant, identifiable or characteristic species of this region and refers to many other species. Beryl Hallworth and C.C. Chinnappa also provide an authoritative overview of this region, including information on its climate, geology, and vegetation zones and important notes on the history of human use of these plants.
