Book Synopsis A Clarinet Almanac by : John Macfarlane
Download or read book A Clarinet Almanac written by John Macfarlane and published by Austin Macauley Publishers. This book was released on 2023-04-28 with total page 405 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than 60 years’ experience in playing the clarinet has led to a very personal and idiosyncratic review of the repertoire. From the point of view of being both a player and a programmer the author has endeavoured to find works for unusual combinations involving the clarinet. This book includes a few orchestral solos and several vocal works (both chamber and operatic), but it is focussed on chamber music and includes gems from the repertoire for the standard wind quintet. The clarinet features as a solo instrument, in duos with a surprisingly large variety of instruments and in mixed trios, quartets and so on to larger ensembles. During the course of one year the reader will be exposed to 366 works, probably some unfamiliar, by 245 different composers. The author hopes it will whet the appetites of students, teachers and concert organizers alike.

Book Synopsis Playing the Cello, 1780-1930 by : George Kennaway
Download or read book Playing the Cello, 1780-1930 written by George Kennaway and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-22 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This innovative study of nineteenth-century cellists and cello playing shows how simple concepts of posture, technique and expression changed over time, while acknowledging that many different practices co-existed. By placing an awareness of this diversity at the centre of an historical narrative, George Kennaway has produced a unique cultural history of performance practices. In addition to drawing upon an unusually wide range of source materials - from instructional methods to poetry, novels and film - Kennaway acknowledges the instability and ambiguity of the data that supports historically informed performance. By examining nineteenth-century assumptions about the very nature of the cello itself, he demonstrates new ways of thinking about historical performance today. Kennaway’s treatment of tone quality and projection, and of posture, bow-strokes and fingering, is informed by his practical insights as a professional cellist and teacher. Vibrato and portamento are examined in the context of an increasing divergence between theory and practice, as seen in printed sources and heard in early cello recordings. Kennaway also explores differing nineteenth-century views of the cello’s gendered identity and the relevance of these cultural tropes to contemporary performance. By accepting the diversity and ambiguity of nineteenth-century sources, and by resisting oversimplified solutions, Kennaway has produced a nuanced performing history that will challenge and engage musicologists and performers alike.
Book Synopsis Essays on German Literature and Culture, Part II by : Chris Ramon Vanden Bossche
Download or read book Essays on German Literature and Culture, Part II written by Chris Ramon Vanden Bossche and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 710 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "In the early 1820s, the acclaimed Victorian philosopher, social critic, and essayist Thomas Carlyle achieved a level of expertise in German language and literature that prompted editors to seek him out as a reviewer and launched his career as an essayist. Carlyle has long been credited with establishing the importance of new German writing in Britain at the time, and Essays on German Literature brings together his complete writings on the topic. This volume will be published in two parts. In the essays in part 1, Carlyle ranges broadly over German literature, much of it new to English-speaking audiences, and comments on three writers-Goethe, Richter, and Novalis-who profoundly influenced him. The essays in part 2 include historical overviews of German literature from the Middle Ages to the present and a series of commentaries marking the passing of Goethe. In keeping with the Norman and Charlotte Strouse Edition of the Writings of Thomas Carlyle, these essays are accompanied by a thorough historical introduction to the material, extensive notes providing historical and cultural context while expanding on references and allusions, and a textual apparatus that carefully details and explains the editorial decisions made in reconciling the editions of each essay"--

Book Synopsis The Works of Thomas Carlyle by : Thomas Carlyle
Download or read book The Works of Thomas Carlyle written by Thomas Carlyle and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1899 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Thomas Carlyle (1795-1881) was one of the most influential authors of the nineteenth century. Eagerly studied at the highest level of intellectual society, his satirical essays and perceptive historical biographies caused him to be regarded for much of the Victorian period as a literary genius and eminent social philosopher. After graduating from Edinburgh University in 1814, he published his first scholarly work on German literature in 1824, before finding literary success with his history of the French Revolution in 1837. After falling from favour during the first part of the twentieth century, his work has more recently become the subject of scholarly re-examination. His introduction of German literature and philosophy into the British intellectual milieu profoundly influenced later philosophical ideas and literary studies. These volumes are reproduced from the 1896 Centenary Edition of his collected works. Volume 27 contains the second volume of a collection of critical essays."-- from the back cover.
