Book excerpt: Why Do Students Often Have Trouble Counting Beyond 100? And what we can do to help them with this hurdle. Certainly, when you think about mathematics, you think about numbers. When you think about learning mathematics, you might have great thoughts of the quest to tackle problems that unlock applicable solutions. Ask any lower elementary student to count aloud for you and chances are they will stop counting at 100. It doesn't matter if you ask them to count by 1s or to skip-count by 5s or 10s, 100 forms a natural stopping point. The problem arises when you ask young students to go further. "What comes next?" I ask my young math students. Many students are unsure about counting beyond 100, especially if I ask them to write the numbers on paper.100-a number not too small, not too large, but just right to challenge students without intimidating them. It's used in myriad ways within the problems: as an exponent, product, area, or perimeter; a constant in an equation; the number of items in a series or sequence; or as a physical value, such as a stack of 100 coins, a deck with 100 cards, or a jug that holds 100 ounces. There is something magical about the number 100, and these problems aim to capture some of that magic. But no matter how 100 is used, each problem is meant to spark curiosity and motivate students (and their teachers) to want to solve it.

Book excerpt: Benny Lewis, who speaks over ten languages—all self-taught—runs the largest language-learning blog in the world, Fluent In 3 Months. Lewis is a full-time "language hacker," someone who devotes all of his time to finding better, faster, and more efficient ways to learn languages. Fluent in 3 Months: How Anyone at Any Age Can Learn to Speak Any Language from Anywhere in the World is a new blueprint for fast language learning. Lewis argues that you don't need a great memory or "the language gene" to learn a language quickly, and debunks a number of long-held beliefs, such as adults not being as good of language learners as children.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Finish your child's education of numbers 1-100 with Kids Learning Pages' "Let's Count To 100 Volume 4..". Kids Learning Pages' "Let's Count To 100" is an effective tool for helping your child learn numbers and number words. The ages of 5-7 are a crucial period in a child's life, during which they are constantly learning and developing a foundation for their education over the next several years. Learning to count and write numbers is a critical skill, and as a parent, there are many options you have for giving your little one all the practice they need. Penmanship goes hand in hand with literacy, fine motor skills, and handwriting -- all of which are being developed as your child engages in writing and drawing activities. "Let's Count To 100 Volume 4" continues your child's progression through the numbers 1-100, focusing on 76-100 as your child learns to trace each number. As your child masters these higher double digits, they'll finally be ready to take on more advanced mathematical concepts. Within the pages of "Let's Count To 100 Volume 4", you'll find: Easy to follow instructions - "Let's Count To 100 Volume 4" shows your child the way through numbers by making tracing easy and fun. A numbered step guides each pencil stroke, and your child will enjoy memorizing each number and letter. They'll develop proper penmanship and spacing for 76-100, and after they're done, they'll be prepared to count 1-100 in sequence. Pages suited for all levels of progress - By the age of 5, some children are already able to count into the double digits and write many of those numbers as well. Other children are still working their way through the teens, while others are still working up to the number 4. Wherever your child fits, it's all completely normal -- all children develop at their own pace. With "Let's Count To 100 Volume 4", you're helping your child to learn what they will need to know for school and gain confidence to learn even more. Word-tracing exercises and practice - Once your child has completed tracing numbers 76-100, the next step is moving to trace the words to go with every number. All children must learn how to write "eighty-nine" to go with the number 89, and being able to do so further ingrains the knowledge of where that number fits in the counting sequence. Your child will be one step closer to being able to count and write numbers 1-100! A FREE digital edition - When you purchase a copy of "Let's Count To 100 Volume 4", you also gain access to a digital copy of the book. This allows you to print as many copies of the pages as you like, giving your child extra practice with the numbers and words. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The United States routinely has one of the lowest voter turnout rates of any developed democracy in the world. That rate is also among the most internally diverse, since the federal structure allows state-level variations in voting institutions that have had—and continue to have—sizable local effects. But are expansive institutional efforts like mail-in registration, longer poll hours, and “no-excuse” absentee voting uniformly effective in improving voter turnout across states? With How the States Shaped the Nation, Melanie Jean Springer places contemporary reforms in historical context and systematically explores how state electoral institutions have been instrumental in shaping voting behavior throughout the twentieth century. Although reformers often assume that more convenient voting procedures will produce equivalent effects wherever they are implemented, Springer reveals that this is not the case. In fact, convenience-voting methods have had almost no effect in the southern states where turnout rates are lowest. In contrast, the adverse effects associated with restrictive institutions like poll taxes and literacy tests have been persistent and dramatic. Ultimately, Springer argues, no single institutional fix will uniformly resolve problems of low or unequal participation. If we want to reliably increase national voter turnout rates, we must explore how states’ voting histories differ and better understand the role of political and geographical context in shaping institutional effects.
