Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Algoma Headwaters is one of nine signature sites in Ontario established in 1999. Signature sites were identified for their range of natural and recreational values, and their potential to contribute to future recreation and tourism. This management plan guides the resource stewardship, operations, and development of the Algoma Headwaters Signature Site, and may be reviewed and revised to address changing issues or conditions, as necessary. This plan pertains to the entire Algoma Headwaters Signature Site, and incorporates management of the four protected areas it contains: Algoma Headwaters Provincial Park, Goulais River Provincial Park, Aubinadong -- Nushatogaini Rivers Provincial Park, and the Ranger North Conservation Reserve. This plan reflects the intent of the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) / Ontario Parks to protect heritage features and values, and to maintain and develop high quality opportunities for outdoor recreation and heritage appreciation for the residents of Ontario and visitors to the province. It frames the management of the four protected areas around their designation, goals, and objectives. In addition, it outlines a prioritized phase-in for the implementation of the direction contained in the plan, with the intent to provide a level of service to visitors in this protected area. A summary of the public consultation carried out during the planning process is also contained in this plan."--Document.

Book excerpt: Explore the connection between people and places on the rugged shore of Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater lake. Conor Mihell offers a compelling image of Lake Superior’s Canadian shore through colourful personality sketches, adventure stories, and environmental accounts. Admire the kitschy decor of lighthouse cottager Maureen Robertson, a 76-year-old who spends six months of the year alone on a remote island; enter the debate over a controversial aggregate quarry in Wawa, Ontario; and learn how the author’s love affair with the world’s largest freshwater lake began on quests for a near-mystical, glacier-dropped monolith. Mihell’s stories build on Lake Superior’s rich and varied history and support its critical place in Canadian culture. Since the beginning, Lake Superior has been revered for its God-like qualities of power, unpredictability, and a seemingly endless expanse of life-sustaining freshwater. The lake’s rugged yet fragile nature and hardscrabble characters and outpost communities define rural northwestern Canada. Experience it for yourself in this first collection of stories by one of the region’s most acclaimed journalists.

Book excerpt: A collection of adventures (and misadventures) spent travelling in the wilderness. Kevin Callan presents his best adventures – and misadventures – in the wilderness. Entertaining, yet enlightening, the stories are full of enthusiasm and are designed to get people to explore the wilderness on their own, and it’s hoped, be inspired to protect what’s still left. These captured moments of a life spent traveling in secluded areas and promoting their importance to all of us aren’t just for outdoorsy types. The stories relate to a much broader audience: readers who have pondered sleeping under the stars or paddling a canoe across a calm lake or down wild rapids, or even venturing into the winter woods. After reading this book, they’ll want to pack up and go the very next day.
