During these years it has progressed rapidly and now full courses of a half year or more are given in Anatomy, Physiology, Me chanics of Exercise, Physiology of Exercise, and several other topics. Altho students preparing to be specialists in Physical Education pursue this more extensive course, there are still those who wish to read the general theory of the subject within the limits of a single brief volume, and for such this book is prepared. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gary Public Schools Physical Training and Play In the last few years both laymen and professional educators have engaged in a lively controversy as to the merits and defects, advantages and disadvantages of what has come to be called the Gary idea or the Gary plan. The rapidly increasing literature bearing on the subject is, however, deficient in details and too often partisan in tone. The present study was undertaken by the General Education Board at the request of the Gary school authorities for the purpose of presenting an accurate and comprehensive account of the Gary schools in their significant aspects. In the several volumes in which the main features of the Gary schools are separately considered, the reader will observe that, after presenting facts, each of the authors discusses or - in technical phrase - attempts to evaluate the Gary plan from the angle of his particular interest. Facts were gathered in a patient, painstaking, and objective fashion; and those who want facts, and facts only, will, it is believed, find them in the descriptive and statistical portions of the respective studies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Syllabus and Manual of Physical Training for Public Schools This book is the outcome of the experience of the author in nine years' work as instructor and director of physical training in public schools. In -the preparation of the manuscript valuable suggestions and ideas of organization and arrangement of material were received from workers in the same field and from the many excellent syllabi now used in various city school systems. The object in presenting the work is to give teachers a guide for classroom exercises and concrete examples of required work in physical training with instructions and explanations necessary to make clear interpretations of subject matter. Adequate material is offered and arranged to comply with the New York State requirements in physical training B, D and E. Especial attention is called to the explanations of movements of the different parts of the body; recreation drills; graded lessons; athletic periods for boys and girls; imaginary plays, and games. Attention should also be called to the fact that habits of regular exercise and of personal cleanliness are health measures and are essential parts of any program for the health education of school children. As the direct result of carrying out this course in physical training children will acquire the health habits taught. We can examine each child to find out if the exercises are practiced regularly at home; if the talks on personal cleanliness are bearing fruit in the improvement of the child's personal appearance; and if the-habit of walking and sitting in correct position is becoming fixed. Valuable assistance in the preparation of this manual was rendered by Dr. Horatio M. Pollock and Miss Ruth Slocum, and expert criticism was kindly given by Dr. Thomas A. Storey, Inspector of Physical Training, New York State. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A System of Physical Culture: Prepared Expressly for Public School Work The demand of teachers and others for the analysis of "Physical Culture for Public Schools," by Louise Preece, has led to this work. Every exercise can be taken by the pupils when standing in the aisles beside their seats. The writer has aimed to make the explanations clear, but at the same time as brief as possible, that the directions may be easily followed without wading through ranch abstract matter. Although no written work can take the place of a living teacher, it is hoped that this analysis will nevertheless be of assistance to those who have never before studied Physical Culture, until they may have the instruction of a competent teacher. The directions throughout have been addressed to public school teachers, but the plan of work is adapted to all, - men, women and children, of all ages and conditions. Book excerpt: How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. The resulting principles of a self-directed, experiential, problem-centred approach to learning have been hugely influential and are still the basis of the learning practices we use today. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. The addition of two new chapters on diversity and inclusion in adult learning, and andragogy and the online adult learner. An updated supporting website. This website for the 9th edition of The Adult Learner will provide basic instructor aids. For each chapter, there will be a PowerPoint presentation, learning exercises, and added study questions. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher, practitioner, or student in education, an adult learning practitioner, training manager, or involved in human resource development, this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without.
