Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: In January 1980 the Department of Agricultural Economics at MSU was requested by USAID/Yaounde to carry out a series of studies to assess the agricultural development potential of the Mandara area. Since that time, numerous studies have been undertaken and reported (see bibliography). This paper summarizes the findings of the studies completed to date and speculates on the expected findings of those which will be completed later in 1981. The focus of this paper is on identifying potential interventions which can increase agricultural and livestock production, income, and the welfare of rural people over the next five to ten years.

Download or read book The Interactions of Human Mobility and Farming Systems on Biodiversity and Soil Quality in the Western Highlands of Cameroon written by Tankou, Christopher Mubeteneh and published by Langaa RPCIG. This book was released on 2014-01-16 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Population growth and the drop in the returns from the major cash crop (coffee) for small farmers are the main drivers that have influenced the farming systems and mobility of farmers in the Western Highlands of Cameroon. The main objective of the research that led to this book was to determine the interactions between farming systems and human mobility in this region of Cameroon. A comparative study was conducted through household and field surveys in three villages and conceptualized based on the systems approach. The different types of mobility were influenced by household social factors, the quest for 'high valued' farm plots and hired labour. Urban-rural migration contributed to occupation diversification and social mobility. The sustainability factor was a function of land use intensity, intensity of off-farm inputs, the household adjustment factor and mobility of the household. The sacred groves were rich in plant diversity of varied ecological and economic importance. Nitrogen mining was common at all levels of the farming system. These determinants and types of mobility claims are pertinent to the research area; the sustainability results of the farming systems reflect the reality on the ground; the nutrient flux evaluated at the crop and farm levels constitute a valuable database for future research.

Book Synopsis Woody Plants in Agro-Ecosystems of Semi-Arid Regions by : Henk Breman

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a quantitative analysis of the role of woody plants in semi-arid regions, for the aSSessment of their benefits in agrosylvopastoralland-use systems with productive and sus tainability objectives. The insights presented and conclusions drawn allow the additional benefits of woody plants for specific climatic and physical site conditions and land-use systems to be estimated. The Sahel and Sudan zones in West Africa, on which the book focusses, represent resource-poor conditions, whose ecological dynamics have been relatively well studied. The role of woody plants in this region, as assessed in this book, is extrapolated to other semi-arid regions, leading to general conclusions on agroforestry's potential as an option for sustainable land use in semi-arid regions. The origins of this book go back to 1982, when the Club du Sahel requested that available data on woody plants in the Sahel region be synthesised, to provide basic information to enable better attention to be given to woody plants in rural development programmes. We are grateful to the Club du Sahel for this challenge. Various people contributed to studies used in this book. The preliminary inventory of the data available was made by Frits Ohler; later his work was continued by Franciska Dekker.

This book was released on 1981 with total page 98 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Extract: In this essay, we will be examining, through a review of the literature as well as a case study of a rural community in northern Tanzania, the proposition that small farmers who chose to divert a proportion of their land and labor to production for market sales (and thus away from subsistence production) will be unable to maintain their previous levels of food consumption.
