Book excerpt: Hand-in-hand with Pili, the reader discovers the adventures of a little girl who travels the world with her dad, National Geographic Image Collection photographer Kike Calvo. In this brilliantly illustrated book, Pili, the Little Explorer, follows her dreams all the way from New York City to the Colombian rainforest. The core message of this Little Explorer, Big World series is environmental conservation and sustainability. It tackles the concepts of cultural diversity and empowerment, global readiness and peace, entrepreneurship and climate change. Pili imagines a peaceful place in the world for children. Her plan: it will be a forest reserve, and it will be in Colombia. This is not an easy goal for a little girl to accomplish. But Pili is determined; somehow, she will get this done! "The children of the world--and little girls in particular--can use a few positive messages that will inspire them to aspire. This book has many such messages, tucked into a sweet, beautifully illustrated near-to-life narrative like little folded love-notes."~ Carl SafinaEndowed Professor for Nature and Humanity, Stony Brook University Founder, The Safina CenterAuthor, Beyond Words; What Animals Think and Feel

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Takahashis An Adventure in English Language Space: A Key to the Mysteries of Prepositions, goes beyond the basic dos and donts of English grammar into contextual space. He defines dimensional relationships of words to their meanings and proper usage to help native and non-native speakers of English grasp the layers of possibilities beneath the often ambiguous sound-and-sense method of approach to the English language. He finds discrepancies between other authoritative dictionaries and puts as many myths to rest in tangible explanations of how the structure of language in and around prepositions can be straightforward and comprehensible. Takahashis An Adventure in English Language Space is for everyone, from scholars to anyone who is curious about the sense and meaning of English prepositions.

Book excerpt: At the age of eighty, my door to a career in medical and scientific writing was slammed shut by ageism. To keep my brain occupied, I turned to writing fiction. I didnt take creative writing courses in my youth, so I hope my shortcomings are compensated for by lessons learned in life. After my wife died of cancer, I raised my sons as a single parent. Ive met politicians, madams, prostitutes, pedophiles, FBI agents, and Russian intelligence agents. Im even acquainted with a former major general in the KGB. Ive traveled to Europe sixteen times, including three visits to Vladimir Putins hometown of Saint Petersburg. I can still speak some French and German. Ive also been to South America and North Africa. I used to be a moderately strong chess player (even Bobby Fischer tolerated my presence, which was uncommon for someone so hostile). Im fairly knowledgeable about dolphins and venomous snakes. My masters paper at Columbia University dealt with nuclear weapons testing. Since my Russian is limited to the alphabet, Im obliged to read my favorite author, Dostoevsky, in English translation. I envy the craftsmanship of James Joyce. His Dubliners should be read and reread by all aspiring fiction writers. Alas, Ill never get to his level.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here is the riveting story of the English language, from its humble beginnings as a regional dialect to its current preeminence as the one global language, spoken by more than two billion people worldwide. In this groundbreaking book, Melvyn Bragg shows how English conquered the world. It is a magnificent adventure, full of jealousy, intrigue, and war—against a hoard of invaders, all armed with their own conquering languages, which bit by bit, the speakers of English absorbed and made their own. Along the way, its colorful story takes in a host of remarkable people, places, and events: the Norman invasion of England in 1066; the arrival of The Canterbury Tales and a “coarse” playwright named William Shakespeare, who added 2,000 words to the language; the songs of slaves; the words of Davy Crockett; and the Lewis and Clark expedition, which led to hundreds of new words as the explorers discovered unknown flora and fauna. The Adventure of English is an enthralling story not only of power, religion, and trade, but also of a people and how they changed the world.

Book excerpt: This book has been created for both intermediate English students and their English teachers, who will be able to find a variety of activities to complement their English classes. Although this book has been particularly designed for Intermediate English levels and academic spaces at the Licenciatura en Lengua Castellana, Inglés y Francés, such as Language and Communication I & II, Language Interaction and Anglophone Society I & II, and even Pedagogical Practicum and Formative Research, it can be adapted to several other levels of mastery of the language, as well as to a wide range of educational EFL (English as a Foreign Language) and ESL (English as a Second Language) settings, given the fact that the book's main aim is to provide students with the opportunity to take a prime role as the center of the leaming process of a rich experience of language in use (Krashen, 1989). Such goal can be achieved through didactic class tasks that can ignite the thirst for communicating in English in order to consolidate the concepts already learned in class and, beyond that, by letting go of any fear and anxiety to 'function' well-or 'accurately'-in English class, and sharing their own background knowledge and their own 'self' towards the construction of new ways of thinking and seeing the world that surrounds them within an educational framework.
