Book excerpt: The search for gravitational radiation with optical interferometers is gaining momentum worldwide. Beside the VIRGO and GEO gravitational wave observatories in Europe and the two LIGOs in the United States, which have operated successfully during the past decade, further observatories are being completed (KAGRA in Japan) or planned (ILIGO in India). The sensitivity of the current observatories, although spectacular, has not allowed direct discovery of gravitational waves. The advanced detectors (Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo) at present in the development phase will improve sensitivity by a factor of 10, probing the universe up to 200 Mpc for signal from inspiraling binary compact stars. This book covers all experimental aspects of the search for gravitational radiation with optical interferometers. Every facet of the technological development underlying the evolution of advanced interferometers is thoroughly described, from configuration to optics and coatings and from thermal compensation to suspensions and controls. All key ingredients of an advanced detector are covered, including the solutions implemented in first-generation detectors, their limitations, and how to overcome them. Each issue is addressed with special reference to the solution adopted for Advanced VIRGO but constant attention is also paid to other strategies, in particular those chosen for Advanced LIGO.

Book excerpt: The research described in this thesis investigates some of the key technologies required to improve the sensitivity of the next generation of interferometric gravitational wave detectors. A complete optical design of a high optical power, suspended mode-cleaner was undertaken in order to reduce any spatial or frequency instability of the input laser beam. This includes a study of thermal effects due to high circulating power, and a separate study of a vibration isolation system. In the last few years the Australian Consortium for Interferometric Gravitational Astronomy (ACIGA) has developed an advanced vibration isolation system, which is planned for use in the Australian International Gravitational Observatory (AIGO). A local control system originally developed for the mode-cleaner vibration isolator has evolved for application to the main vibration isolation system. Two vibration isolator systems have been assembled and installed at the Gingin Test Facility ( 80km north of Perth in Western Australia) for performance testing, requiring installation of a Nd:YAG laser to measure the cavity longitudinal residual motion. Results demonstrate residual motion at nanometre level at 1 Hz. Increasing the circulating power in the main arm cavities of the interferometer can amplify the photon-phonon interaction between the test mass and the circulating beam, enhancing the three-mode parametric interaction and creating an optical spring effect. As part of a broader study of parametric instabilities, in collaboration with the California Institute of Technology, a simulation of the circulating beam in the main arms of Advanced LIGO was completed to determine the characteristics of the higher order optical modes. The simulation encompassed di raction losses, optical gain, optical mode Q-factor and mode frequency separation. The results are presented for varying mode orders as a function of mirror diameter. The effect of test mass tilt on diffraction losses, and different coatings conffgurations are also presented. These simulations led to a study of the effect of power recycling cavities in higher order mode suppression. Current interferometric gravitational wave detectors in operation have marginally stable recycling cavities, where higher order modes are enhanced by the power recycling cavity, effectively increasing the parametric gain. A study of stable recycling cavities was undertaken in collaboration with the University of Florida, which has evolved into a proposed design for a 5 kilometre AIGO interferometer. This thesis concludes with an analysis of the work here presented and an outline of future work that will help to improve the design of advanced interferometric gravitational wave detectors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With his Ph.D. thesis, presented here in the format of a "Springer Theses", Paul Fulda won the 2012 GWIC thesis prize awarded by the Gravitational Wave International Committee. The impact of thermal noise on future gravitational wave detectors depends on the size and shape of the interrogating laser beam. It had been known since 2006 that, in theory, higher-order Laguerre-Gauss modes could reduce thermal noise. Paul Fulda’s research brings Laguerre-Gauss modes an enormous step forward. His work includes analytical, numerical and experimental work on table-top setups as well as experiments at the Glasgow 10m prototype interferometer. Using numerical simulations the LG33 mode was selected as the optical mode to be tested. Further research by Paul and his colleagues since then concentrated on this mode. Paul has developed and demonstrated simple and effective methods to create this mode with diffractive optics and successfully demonstrated its compatibility with the essential building blocks of gravitational wave detectors, namely, optical cavities, Michelson interferometers and opto-electronic sensing and control systems. Through this work, Laguerre-Gauss modes for interferometers have been transformed from an essentially unknown entity to a well understood option with an experimental basis.

Book excerpt: Gravitational waves were predicted by Einstein over 75 years ago, but have not yet been seen. This book is about the technology of the new generation of interferometric gravitational wave detectors now being built, such as the LIGO (Laser Interferometric Gravitational-Wave Observatory) project in the US. The book aims to make plain how these detectors function, and why it is reasonable to think that gravitational waves may be successfully detected in the next decade. After an introduction to the physical and astronomical aspects of gravitational waves, the book concentrates on explaining the basic principles behind the detectors and discusses the strategies for utilising them. All the required background in astronomy, optics and experimental physics techniques is developed within the text, and anyone with an undergraduate knowledge of physics will be able to follow the arguments presented. The book will be of use not just to physicists and astronomers who wish to acquaint themselves with the subject, but will also prove useful for courses in experimental physics at the advanced undergraduate and graduate levels.

This book was released on 2006 with total page 219 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A network of laser interferometer gravitational waves detectors spread across the globe is currently running and steadily improving. After complex data analysis from the output signal of the present detectors, astrophysical results begin to emerge with upper limits on gravitational wave sources. So far, however no direct detection has been announced. To increase the sensitivity of current detectors, a second generation of interferometers is planned which will make gravitational wave astronomy a reality within one decade. The advanced generation of interferometers will represent a substantial upgrade from current detectors. Especially, very high optical power will circulate in the arm cavities in order to reduce by one order of magnitude the shot noise limited sensitivity in high frequency. However, the theoretical shot noise limit will only be achieved after implementation of complex thermal lensing compensation schemes. Thermal lensing is direct consequence of the residual optical absorption inside the substrate and coating of the test masses and could have tragic consequences for the functionality of the interferometer. The Australian Consortium for Interferometric Gravitational Astronomy (ACIGA) in collaboration with LIGO will run a series of high optical power tests to understand the characteristics and effects of thermal lensing. During these tests, techniques to compensate thermal lensing will be experimented. This thesis mainly focused on the first high optical power test in Gingin, Australia. The first test will consist of a Fabry Perot cavity with the sapphire substrate of the input mirror inside the cavity. Due to the high optical circulating power a strong convergent thermal lens will appear in the input mirror substrate. Because of the presence of the thermal lens inside the cavity, the size of the cavity waist will be reduced and the cavity circulating power will decrease. Simulations using higher order mode expansion and FFT propagation code were completed to estimate ways to compensate strong thermal lensing for the Gingin first test. The term strong thermal lensing is used because the thermal lens focal length is comparable to the design focal length of the optical components. The expected performance of a fused silica compensation plate is presented and advantages and limits of this method are discussed. Experimental results on small scale actuators which can potentially compensate thermal lensing are detailed. The knowledge gained from these experiments was valuable to design the real scale compensation plate which was used in the first Gingin test. This test was carried at the end of 2005. The thermal lens due to 1 kW of optical power circulating in the sapphire substrate was successfully compensated using a fused silica plate. Yet, thermal lensing compensation may only be required for room temperature advanced interferometer. Indeed, we showed that cooling the interferometer mirror to cryogenic temperature can eliminate the thermal lensing problem and also substantially decrease the mirror thermal noise.

In particular it begins by examining the electro-optic modulator whose task it is to add radio frequency sidebands to the main laser beam for sensing and detection of the various degrees of freedom of the interferometer. It discusses the in-vacuum, high power Faraday isolator which is responsible for deflecting the reflected light from the interferometer for sensing and control and for isolating the reflected light from returning to the rest of the input chain. Finally, it describes the input mode cleaner which is used to stabilize and prepare the laser beam before injection into the main interferometer. Finally, Part IV of this dissertation describes a technique for characterizing these resonant optical interferometers through measurement of their eigenspectra. This technique and some of the nuanced details are explained before moving on to a description of the ways in which it has been used to characterize the Advanced LIGO interferometers. The key results obtained with this technique are described in which the eigenspectra measurement is used to monitor the thermal state of the input mode cleaner and of the power recycling cavity.
