Written for the scientist who is new to EPR spectroscopy, the editors have prepared a volume that de-mystifies the basic fundamentals without weighting readers down with detailed physics and mathematics, and then presents clear approaches in specific application areas. The first part presents basic fundamentals and advantages of electron paramagnetic resonance spectrscopy. The second part explores severalapplication areas including chemistry, biology, medicine, materials and geology. A frequently-asked-questions sections focuses on practicalquestions, such as the size of sample, etc. It's an ideal, hands-on reference for chemists and researchers in the pharmaceutical and materials (semiconductor) industries who are looking for a basic introduction to EPR spectroscopy.

Book excerpt: This work is written to provide a qualitative introduction, appropriate for a general science audience, to the application of pragmagnetic resonance to the determination of biomolecular dynamics. The work is also intended as a reference resource for those pursuing or contemplating research in the hydrodynamics. The work is also intended as a reference resource for those pursuing or contemplating research in the hydrodynamic characterization of components of Biosystems. Thus, the Introduction, Theory, and Methodology sections involve presentations at two levels a pictorial and intuitive presentation for the generalist and a quantitative presentation for the specialist. The sections on applications provide a critical discussion of both pure and applied research applications which yields insights into both the capabilities and limitations of the methodology. The applications sections are also of interest from the standpoint of the detailed characterization of certain Biosystems, such as erythrocytes, which have evolved from EPR measurements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EPR of Free Radicals in Solids: Trends in Methods and Applications, 2nd ed. presents a critical two volume review of the methods and applications of EPR (ESR) for the study of free radical processes in solids. Emphasis is on the progress made in the developments in EPR technology, in the application of sophisticated matrix isolation techniques and in the advancement in quantitative EPR that have occurred since the 1st edition was published. Improvements have been made also at theoretical level, with the development of methods based on first principles and their application to the calculation of magnetic properties as well as in spectral simulations. EPR of Free Radicals in Solids I focuses on the trends in experimental and theoretical methods to extract structural and dynamical properties of radicals and spin probes in solid matrices by continuous wave (CW) and pulsed techniques. It presents simulation techniques and software for CW and pulsed EPR as well as studies of quantum effects at low temperature. The chapters dealing with quantum chemistry methods for the theoretical interpretation of hyperfine coupling tensors and g-tensors have been much extended in this edition and a new chapter on the calculation of zero-field splitting tensors has been added. This new edition is a valuable resource to experimentalists and theoreticians in research involving free radicals, as well as for students of advanced courses in physical chemistry, chemical physics, materials science, biophysics, biochemistry and related fields. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most mysterious part of photosynthesis yet the most important for all aerobic life on Earth (including ourselves) is how green plants, algae and cyanobacteria make atmospheric oxygen from water. This thermodynamically difficult process is only achieved in Nature by the unique pigment/protein complex known as Photosystem II, using sunlight to power the reaction. The present volume contains 34 comprehensive chapters authored by 75 scientific experts from around the world. It gives an up-to-date account on all what is currently known about the molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics and physiology of Photosystem II. The book is divided into several parts detailing the protein constituents, functional sites, tertiary structure, molecular dynamics, and mechanisms of homeostasis. The book ends with a comparison of Photosystem II with other related enzymes and bio-mimetic systems. Since the unique water-splitting chemistry catalyzed by Photosystem II leads to the production of pure oxygen gas and has the potential for making hydrogen gas, a primary goal of this book is to provide a molecular guide to future protein engineers and bio-mimetic chemists in the development of biocatalysts for the generation of clean, renewable energy from sunlight and water.

Book excerpt: "This book is a view of enzyme catalysis by a physico-chemist with long-term experience in the investigation of structure and action mechanism of biological catalysts. This book is not intended to provide an exhaustive survey of each topic but rather a discussion of their theoretical and experimental background, and recent developments. The literature of enzyme catalysis is so vast and many scientists have made important contribution in the area, that it is impossible in the space allowed for this book to give a representative set of references. The author has tried to use reviews, and general principles of articles. He apologizes to those he has not been able to include. . ... The monograph is intended for scientists working on enzyme catalysis and adjacent areas such as chemical modeling of biological processes, homogeneous catalysis, biomedical research and biotechnology. The book can be use as a subsidiary manual for instructors, graduate and undergraduate students of university biochemistry and chemistry departments."--Pages ix-x.

Book excerpt: Structure and function of the components of the photosynthetic apparatus and the molecular biology of these components have become the dominant themes in advances in our understanding of the light reactions of oxygenic photosynthesis. Oxygenic Photosynthesis: The Light Reactions presents our current understanding of these reactions in thylakoid membranes. Topics covered include the photosystems, the cytochrome b6-f complex, plastocyanin, ferredoxin, FNR, light-harvesting complexes, and the coupling factor. Chapters are also devoted to the structure of thylakoid membranes, their lipid composition, and their biogenesis. Updates on the crystal structures of cytochrome f, ATP synthase and photosystem I are presented and a section on molecular biology and evolution of the photosynthetic apparatus is also included. The chapters in this book provide a comprehensive overview of photosynthetic reactions in eukaryotic thylakoids. The book is intended for a wide audience, including graduate students and researchers active in this field, as well as those individuals who have interests in plant biochemistry and molecular biology or plant physiology.

Book excerpt: This book is intended to collect in one place as much information as possible on the use of EPR spectroscopy in the analysis of systems in which two or more spins are magnetically coupled. This is a field where research is very active and chemists are elbow-to-elbow with physicists and biologists in the forefront. Here, as in many other fields, the contributions coming from different disciplines are very important, but for active researchers it is sometimes difficult to follow the literature, due to differences in languages, and sources which are familiar to, e. g. , a physicist, are exotic to a chemist. Therefore, an effort is needed in order to provide a unitary description of the many different phenomena which are collected under the title. In order to define the arguments which are treated, it is useful to state clearly what is not contained here. So we do not treat magnetic phenomena in conductors and we neglect ferro- and antiferromagnetic resonance. The basic foundations of EPR spectroscopy are supposed to be known by the reader, while we introduce the basis of magnetic interactions between spins. In the first two chapters we review the foundations of exchange interactions, trying to show how the magnetic parameters are bound to the electronic structure of the interacting centers.
