Book excerpt: A review of the present status of knowledge regarding gun propellant combustion under realistic conditions indicates that information is needed regarding spatial and temporal distribution of reaction products and intermediate species. Information as to the identity of a number of such species and the non-equilibrium 'temperature' of these materials is also urgently needed. A number of optical techniques have recently been developed that hold promise for producing some of the needed information. The complexity of the techniques and their level of development varies widely and their potential must be evaluated on a case-by-case basis as to which would be most amenable for use. A large portion of the equipment required for their exploitation is the same so that an effort in the general area of combustion diagnostics by advanced optical methods would make a number of the methods available for evaluation. Ancillary data concerning propellant functioning other than combustion would also become available if such a combustion diagnostics program were actively pursued. (Author).

Book excerpt: This textbook, supported by the Textbook Publishing Center of University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, provides a fundamental introduction to advanced diagnostics techniques for graduate students majoring in combustion science, chemistry, and chemical engineering-related subjects. The textbook provides an overview with respect to the spectroscopic methods in advanced diagnostics techniques such as gas chromatography/mass spectrometry, thermochemical analysis, Raman scattering, and nuclear magnetic resonance. It then describes the comprehensive basic theory, equipment structure, and testing methods of diagnostic techniques and summarizes the analysis methods commonly used in combustion chemical reaction processes. This can provide graduate students with important guidance and comprehensive understanding of diagnostics techniques before performing physics and chemistry experiments. In addition, it provides an introduction into using common mathematical and graphics packages for students to acquire and practice the tools to comply with international standards. The textbook is concise and illustrative and includes hot issues and current progress of diagnostics. In addition, exercises and questions are included at the end of each chapter for students to practice and gain hands-on experience. Given its scope, the textbook is of great benefit to graduate students in combustion chemistry and engineering and other related areas such as environmental science, optical engineering, and thermal science and is also beneficial for researchers with interdisciplinary backgrounds.

Book excerpt: We report on work to develop and demonstrate a diagnostic technique using infrared fiber optics to probe the decomposition processes in burning gun propellant strands. The experiments reported here involve measuring the absorption across an open gap between two embedded fibers as it fills with gaseous decomposition products. Spectroscopic detection is achieved using pairs of bandpass filters. The absorption record can be correlated with readings from embedded thermocouples and with a high resolution video recording of the burn. We have observed N20, a decomposition product of RDX, evolving into the observation volume. The N20 appearance is often an abrupt event. Coupled with evidence that it can occur while the observation region is relatively cool and far from the burning surface (observed in cases involving burning at 6 atm pressure), these observations suggest hypotheses concerning the physical processes in the condensed phases of this propellant, hypotheses including the development of pressurized voids or matrix-trapped bubbles which can release decomposition gases into the unburnt propellant through suddenly opening cracks. The appearance of N20 after the temperature record suggests that melting and decomposition of RDX have begun (observed in 1 atm cases) implies that N20 formation is indeed not an initial step in RDX decomposition under our conditions. Book excerpt: A new class of experimental very high burning rate propellants (VHBR) has been formulated and studied for application toward the traveling charge concept. Combustion diagnostic work has been performed on various formulations to characterize the burning of these propellants under gun pressures. Results of the combustion diagnostics indicate that several of the VHBR propellant formulations could be used as a traveling charge gun propellant. These diagnostic results were also used as propellant input parameters for a traveling charge computer model, XNOVAKTC. Gun firings were performed for both conventional and traveling charge configurations. Comparisons are presented between the experimental firings and the computer predictions. Results indicate that the traveling charge concept can offer increased performance over conventional systems provided that the traveling charge concept can offer increased performance over conventional systems provided that the ignition and burnout times of the traveling charge can be controlled. Book excerpt: This is the final report for a program to extend an embedded-infrared-fiber propellant strand burning diagnostic by replacing bandpass filter detection by spectral detection. This work builds on previous investigations into the chemical and physical processes occurring in the condensed phases of nitramine advanced composite propellants, in which we observed decomposition product gases by infrared absorption in a small volume below the flame front. Detection of infrared absorption spectra along with video camera and embedded thermocouple records allows characterization of the evolution of decomposition regions by correlating time, spatial location, temperature and decomposition species fractions. Much of the effort of the program went into optimizing the sensitivity of the FTIR spectrometer/fiber optic apparatus, and into constructing test articles. The difficulty of these tasks limited us to only a handful of successful burns. The spectra obtained clearly show N2O and CO2, thus confirming our earlier work and adding a new species to those detected previously. Evidence for other gases is less certain.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This program addresses the extremely challenging problem of direct, in situ diagnostics of the heterogeneoys surface reaction zone of energetic materials combustion. Specifically, the experiments employed an optical diagnostic, Raman scattering, to provide critically-needed species- and temperature-specific information on surface and near-surface reaction zones of modern, nitramine-based propellant formulations. Experiments employed a laboratory-scale, motorized, and servo-controlled, strand burner over a range of pressure from 1-20 atm. Broadband Raman scattering from the surface layer was acquired with a spectrograph detection system and Stokes/anti-Stokes ratios were used to provide surface temperature measurements. Raman thermometry was shown to be an effective diagnostic for surface temperature measurements of RDS combustion. The temperature sensitivity of the Raman spectrum of RDS was analytically modeled and verified by experimental data. The optical properties, reflectivity and absorptivity, were measured at 532 nm during this investigation. Signal interferences and laser perturbations (laser damage threshold, laser induced heating, laser induced fluorescence) were investigated at excitation wavelengths of 355, 532 and 783 nm. The surface temperature measured with Raman thermometry was in excellent agreement with the results of microthermocouple data obtained in other laboratories.

Investigation of the Low Pressure Combustion of LOVA XM39 Propellant written by J. O. Doali and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Mobile Combustion Diagnostic (MCDF) has been fabricated to investigate the chemical products produced from the combustion of propellants at pressures below 16 MPa. These data are required in order to better understand the combustion phenomenology of propellants at low pressures. The design and capabilities of the MCDF as well as preliminary chemical analysis of nonequilibrium ignition/combustion products using GC and FTIR techniques from hot wire initiated LOVA XM39 propellant are presented. The experiments were performed in both a closed bomb mode and vented chamber mode at various loading densities and pressures. It was found that greater amounts of nonequilibrium combustion products were produced under interrupted burning conditions than under closed bomb conditions and that these products decreased with increasing burst disc pressure and increased with higher loading density. Keywords: LOVA (Low Vulnerability Ammunition); Combustion and ignition; Combustion diagnostics; LOVA XM39 Propellant; Interrupted combustion; Combustion Gas analysis. (JES).
