Book excerpt: Fall theme: Covenants With God Genesis | Exodus | Numbers | 1 Samuel | 2 Samuel | Nehemiah | Jeremiah | Ezekiel | 1 Corinthians | Titus This fall, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme, "Covenants With God" and consider the major covenants God made with people on behalf of the earth and the human community. Beginning with Noah, God promised benevolence toward creation. God made similar commitments with Abram, Phinehas, and Ezekiel. Ultimately, the covenant forms the foundation for the coming Messiah and salvation for the world. The student book writer is Rosanne Osborne. The writer for the teacher book is Tim Bryan. Signs of God's Covenants The four lessons in this unit, drawn from Genesis and Ezekiel, celebrate four signs of God’s covenant. Promising to renew the cycle of seasons, God created the rainbow as a permanent reminder of the covenant with every living thing. Circumcision was the sign of the covenant with Abraham, and the sabbath was the sign of the covenant with Israel at Mount Sinai. The last sign is the Spirit-filled heart. Called Into Covenant With God This five-lesson unit looks at the images of the reign of the resurrected Christ from the Letter to the Hebrews. These lessons help us understand Jesus as the imprint of God, the owner of a household, the great high priest, a priest forever, and the pioneer and perfecter of our faith. An Everlasting Covenant The final unit this quarter develops four lessons, drawn from Numbers, 1 Samuel, Jeremiah, Hebrews, and 1 Corinthians. These lessons examine the components of the covenant God made with the priest, Phinehas, and the divine promise to Israel through the prophet Jeremiah. The unconditional divine promises were to maintain a perpetual priesthood, forgive the unfaithful, and establish a new covenant with Israel. God sealed this covenant of pure grace through Christ as mediator and by writing the Law in the hearts of God's people. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summer Theme: God Genesis | Exodus | Proverbs | Hebrews | Joshua | Psalms |John Romans | Deuteronomy | Habakkuk | Acts This fall, our lessons focus on God, what it means that we are created in God's image, and what it means to worship God alone. The writer of the student book lessons is Clara Welch; the teacher book writer is Stan Purdum. God, the Creator This unit takes us through texts that help us discern what "Godness" is. The readings from Genesis present the Lord as the divine initiator of the cosmos and as the creator of humankind. The Exodus text reminds us that God is not limited to what we can know of or imagine about God, and that mystery remains part of God's nature. In Lesson 4, we learn about Wisdom as an essential part of who God is. And Lesson 5, invites us to consider Christ's role with God in the world's creation. These lessons encourage us to develop the spiritual practice of mindfulness. In God's Image This unit focuses on the human condition. Lesson 6 recalls the story of the sin of Achan, reminding us of the chasm sin imposes between ourselves and our Creator. Lesson 7 takes us to Psalm 51, which is a prayer that models the nature of penitence that asks God to bridge the breach caused by sin. Lesson 8 lets us hear Jesus talking about being born anew and how that provides entry into the kingdom of God. Lesson 9 takes us to a text in Romans, which enables us to consider what the redeemed life looks like. These lessons help us focus on the spiritual practice of confession. Worship This unit unites around the theme "objects of worship," with "objects" meaning not worship aids, such as candles and paraments, but those things we place ahead of God. In Lesson 10, we look at the first two of the Ten Commandments. Lesson 11 takes us to the story of the gold calf and gives us a chance to think about why we may deliberately choose to worship that which is not God. Lesson 12 reminds us that nothing we worship other than God can impart life. And Lesson 13 invites us to understand that the worship impulse is only satisfied when it is directed toward God. These lessons lead us deeper into the spiritual practice of worship. Published quarterly, each week's student book lesson features key verses, reliable and relevant biblical explanation and application, and more. Now, in response to feedback, we are introducing new features and benefits for students including: A comprehensive Bible study plan with more flexibility in terms of Scripture selection and topics. Observation of the church seasons, including Advent and Lent. Suggestions for developing spiritual practices (prayer, confession, worship, mindfulness, solitude, community, hospitality, neighboring, service, and celebration). One font size in the student edition to accommodate all readers. No printed Scripture text allowing you to choose your own Bible translation. Book excerpt: Spring theme: God Loves Us Psalms | Joel | Jonah | John | Romans | Ephesians | 1 John This spring, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme, "God Loves Us." God's love for us is evident in Scripture from the creation of the first humans through God's constant interactions with individuals and groups of people in their historical circumstances and developments. A survey of select Old and New Testament Scriptures reveals dynamic and encouraging aspects of God’s constant love for humankind God's Eternal, Preserving, Renewing Love Four lessons from First John, Ephesians, John, and Joel depict God's love for humans as primary and as the source of all love. These lessons show that God's love overflows, redeems, unites, and renews. The first lesson depicts God as love and the source of all love. The second lesson concentrates on God's redemptive, overflowing, and uniting love in Christ. The third lesson comes from Christ's high priestly prayer to God describing God's love for Jesus and all who believe in Christ. The fourth lesson shows the ultimate restoring and renewing power of God's love. God's Caring, Saving, and Upholding Love The second unit offers five lessons drawn from Psalms, John, and Romans and revealing God as protector, preserver, healer, comforter, and savior of the people. The first lesson reveals total reliance on God as shepherd who cares for every need of the sheep. The second lesson reveals God's love in sending God's only Son for human salvation. The third lesson recounts the Resurrection event in which God's love is displayed as victory over death. The fourth lesson elaborates on the force and power of God's love in Christ to reconcile, justify, and preserve the believer. The final lesson in this unit focuses on Jesus' words describing himself in the role of the Good Shepherd. God's Pervasive and Sustaining Love Four lessons from the Book of Jonah highlight God's unconditional love for humans and the natural world, as well as God's continuing care and concern for individual and group relationships and developments. The first lesson concentrates on God's care for the natural world and humanity. The second lesson focuses on God's providential care in preserving Jonah in the belly of the fish. The third lesson focuses on God's love and preservation of a nation of people who repent and turn to God. The fourth lesson depicts and elaborates on God's pervasive love for all creation. The Christmas lesson gives an account of the wise men who faithfully searched for the newborn King of the Jews. A Living Faith in God The four lessons in this unit explore faith in action from the Book of Daniel. Book excerpt: Hundreds of thousands of people each week have transformative encounters with God through Adult Bible Studies—Bible-based, Christ-focused Sunday school lessons and midweek Bible studies endorsed by the Curriculum Resources Committee of The United Methodist Church. Each week’s Student Book lesson lists background Scripture, features key verses, provides reliable and relevant biblical explanation and application, and more in a readable font size that is accessible to everyone. Additional information about Adult Bible Studies, Fall 2022 Theme: Freedom This fall, our Bible lessons follow the theme of “Freedom.” The lessons explore the concept of salvation and God’s gracious acts in redeeming us. They challenge we who have experienced God’s gracious salvation to work for freedom and justice on behalf of others. They acknowledge that as we do, we will encounter those whose beliefs and values are different from our own, so they encourage us to remain faithful to our beliefs while we act as neighbors to others. Unit 1 Rescue The concept of salvation is broad and inclusive of many divine actions by which we are rescued from the human predicament. The lessons in this unit focus on the freedom to which we are liberated. In the Roman world, the freer you were, the more power you exercised over others. Today, we think of freedom as the ability to do whatever we want without restrictions. In the Bible, freedom is about choosing to whom or what we devote ourselves without restriction. Paul described that choice as servitude to sin or becoming a slave to Christ. Scriptures: Exodus 1:1-2:10; Exodus 15:1-18; Exodus 17:1-16; Deuteronomy 30:15-20 Spiritual Practice: Living With Intentionality Unit 2 Justice In the commandments that God gave in the covenant at Sinai, God repeatedly called the Israelites to extend justice and share their blessings with widows, orphans, and strangers in their midst. This triad represented the most vulnerable people within ancient society. Widows, orphans, and strangers appear frequently throughout the Old and New Testament narratives in ways that illustrate this divine mandate. The measure of justice or righteousness found throughout Scripture is whether one cares for the “widow, the orphan, and the stranger.” The lessons in this unit invite us to ask ourselves, who are the most vulnerable in our society? Who in our community are excluded from the common good? Who has trouble providing for themselves or gaining access to the courts and public services? Scriptures: James 2:14-17, Exodus 22:21-27; 1 Kings 17:8-24, Luke 21:1-4; John 9:1-7, 35-38; Luke 18:1-8; Ezekiel 47:21-23 Spiritual Practice: Awareness Unit 3 Faithful Conversations We increasingly find ourselves living in communities and working with people from diverse backgrounds. While we may not agree with the beliefs of others, we seek peaceable and neighborly relationships. The lessons in this unit explore the models for neighborly conversations with people of various faith traditions. Scriptures: Acts 17:16-31; 2 Kings 5:1-19; Exodus 18:1, 13-27; Romans 14:13-19 Spiritual Practice: Listening Other Adult Bible Study components, sold separately, include: Teacher/Commentary Kit The Kit includes a Teacher Book with additional biblical background, exposition, suggestions for guiding group discussion, and a copy of the quarterly Adult Bible Studies Concise Commentary, designed for readers who seek a solid biblical basis for each session of Adult Bible Studies. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winter theme: Creation: A Divine Cycle Luke | Psalms | Galatians This winter, lessons in Adult Bible Studies follow the theme, "Creation: A Divine Cycle." With the advent of the Savior by the power of the Holy Spirit, God set in motion the fulfillment of the divine plan of salvation. Through Luke's Gospel, several psalms, and the epistle to the Galatians, we explore God's ongoing actions in blessing and reconciling the whole creation. The student book writer is Kevin Baker; Brian Russell is the writer for the teacher book. The Savior Has Been Born The four lessons in this unit are developed from the Gospel of Luke. Lesson One explores how Mary, a virgin, received and joyfully accepted the announcement that she had been highly favored by God to give birth to God's Son. Lesson Two looks at the affirmation of Elizabeth, Mary's cousin, to her news. Lesson Three focuses on John's mission as the forerunner of the Savior. The Christmas Day lesson deals with the birth of Jesus and the circumstances and events pursuant to it. Praise From and for God's Creation The five lessons in this unit employ five different psalms. Several psalms emphasize praise for God that emanates from creation itself. Others invite us to praise God for creation. The Birthing of a New Community This unit has four lessons from Galatians that show us how God's creative process can be seen through the birthing of a new faith community with Jesus Christ as its foundation. The lessons address the importance of spiritual freedom, cooperation, and righteous living in building and maintaining the community. A survey of select Old and New Testament Scriptures reveals dynamic and encouraging aspects of God's constant love for humankind God's Eternal, Preserving, Renewing Love Four lessons from First John, Ephesians, John, and Joel depict God's love for humans as primary and as the source of all love. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Adult Bible Studies Summer 2022 Theme: Transform The lessons this quarter begin with a look at the ministry of the Holy Spirit that brings new life to us as members of the body of Christ. Jesus tells the disciples in John’s Gospel that he must leave so that the Comforter or Holy Spirit could come. The Spirit will lead and guide us into all truth and bring gifts and graces to all who will receive them. This transforming power prepares us for ministry in the world. The Holy Spirit’s work in empowering us to be the church and carry out its mission is not limited to time and space. The lessons in Unit 2 take us through a series of events in the context of Jewish and Gentile hostility in which we see how the Holy Spirit moved the church forward to serve others. The final four lessons in this quarter explore a problem that has plagued humankind throughout the ages—violence! How do we as the people of God confront and overcome this menace to the faith? Unit 1: The Fruit of the Spirit Paul used the metaphor of fruit to help us understand that our lives are like the firstfruits of offering. Through participation in Christ’s crucifixion through baptism, we have offered our lives to God’s service. The Holy Spirit then gives us gifts to display. Scriptures: Acts 2:1-4, 17-21, 33, 38-39; 1 Corinthians 2:10-16; Galatians 5:13-21; Galatians 5:22-26 Spiritual Practice: Silence Unit 2: The Work of the Church These lessons take us through a series of events in the Book of Acts in which the activity of the Holy Spirit drives the action forward. The lessons in Unit 1 identify the gifts granted to us by the Spirit; these lessons look at the path on which the Spirit directs our lives and how the Spirit is already active before we arrive at our destination. Scriptures: Acts 4:23-31; Acts 8:26-39; Acts 11:1-18; Acts 15:1-21; Acts 16:25-34 Spiritual Practice: Service Unit 3: The Pursuit of the People God’s word established a created order that depends on fruitfulness and cultivation rather than violence to maintain it, but humanity through its rivalries brings violence into God’s created order. It is clear from Scripture that God’s intent is to reestablish shalom, the Hebrew word that means “a shared well-being and abundance.” While violence remains a part of the created order, God does not quietly sanction the human use of violence and calls us to imitate God’s love and work toward shalom. Scriptures: 1 Chronicles 22:6-10, 17-19; Matthew 5:9, 38-48; Ephesians 2:11-22; Matthew 26:47-56 Spiritual Practice: Remembering Adult Bible Studies components include: Student Book Published quarterly, each week's Student Book lesson lists background Scripture, features key verses, provides reliable and relevant biblical explanation and application, and more, in a readable font size that is accessible to everyone. Both supplementary and complementary to the Adult Bible Studies student book, the teacher book provides small-group leaders, teachers, and facilitators with additional biblical background and exposition and suggestions for guiding group discussion. Now, in response to feedback, we are introducing new features and benefits for teachers, and their students including: A comprehensive Bible study plan with more flexibility in terms of Scripture selection and topics. Additional information, as well as suggestions, designed to help leaders and facilitators lead with confidence. The lessons from Matthew look at conflicts between Jesus and the Pharisees on questions of mercy and justice. The lesson from Luke looks at how God dispenses justice and mercy. Jesus Calls for Justice and Mercy The five lessons in this unit explore Jesus' teachings on God's justice in Matthew and Luke. Included is Jesus'; demand for leaders to practice justice as well as to understand the universality of God's justice and mercy.
