Book excerpt: The sound of far off sleigh bells drifted into her consciousness, and as Marne tried to remember where she was, she realized that a dark form was hovering above her. Marne struggled to scream as she saw the jagged edge of an unbent hanger as it descended toward her heart. Ken and Marne had been delighted to open their home to a beautiful baby boy in need of a loving family; little did they know that their adopted son had come with a hidden time bomb. Mark Tyler has known the heartbreaking loss of two members of his own family. Life with a child of severe behavior disorders was one of extreme challenges, but nothing could have prepared him for the way his own family story would tragically end. Study lessons of life from this grieving father; learn his most important truth and the family motto forged in pain that continues to give him strength to go on. Mark is hopeful that those who read this book will have a better understanding of hurting children and their families, providing a safe place where their fears are heard and their tears are understood.

It should be read by all who are interested in any aspect of Tuberculosis, including the growing problem of Multi-Drug Resistant Tuberculosis." Journal of American Medical Association "The book serves an important function, relaying statistics and TB hot spots, proposing funding and international standardized treatments. Government officials, researchers and nonprofit health organizations will likely cast this as the authoritative book on the subject." Publishers Weekly "Like other recent works on the threat of infectious diseases such as Laurie Garrett's The Coming Plague, Timebomb has the power of fiction and it is sometimes easy to forget that it is not. Unlike the Garrett book, which is more a collection of short dramatic stories collectively telling a big picture about our coexistence and evolution with microbes, Reichman selects one story and presents it in novel form with better material that most science fiction. The book is organized in a clear and riveting manner. Within the narrative style, the book is rich with up-to-the-minute details and references that add to its depth. An incredible account of politics and disease dynamics occurring at all levels, Timebomb helps us realize that controlling or eradicating TB is not just about science and facts; likely if it were, TB would have long been relegated to the history books." Nature Medicine Magazine Tuberculosis, supposedly defeated by antibiotics half a century ago, has returned in a highly contagious and fatal new form that cannot be treated with conventional drugs. Multidrug-resistant TB (MDR-TB), could cause some 10 million deaths over the next decade and is thriving in the overcrowded prisons of the former Soviet Union. As Timebomb explains in unnerving detail, the virtual collapse of the world's borders means that refugees, tourists, immigrants, business travelers, and others can spread the TB bacillus very efficiently. London, for example, has experienced a 100% increase in reported cases in the past 10 years. Written by the world's preeminent TB expert and an award-winning medical and health writer, Timebomb details the evolution and the current state of the MDR-TB epidemic, interweaving the science of MDR-TB with personal stories of people whose lives have been threatened by the deadly bacteria.

Book excerpt: Some day in the not-so-distant future, you're going to be eating an ice cream sandwich at Hagan Das or drinking your favorite Pina Colada at Margaritaville. If you're with a group of friends or family, you're laughing, joking, enjoying a nice Spring day. Suddenly, you feel a dull thud under your feet and the ground shakes violently in a way that you've never felt before. You look up and notice a huge mushroom cloud rising up into the sky making it darker and darker. Then, you notice a brilliant reddish-orange wall of light coming at you and actually melting cars, trucks and buildings and blowing the smithereens all over the place in all directions. You realize that it is moving so fast, there is no way that you and your family and friends can get out of the way. As you take in the startled, surprised and shocked look on the faces of those around you, you notice a slight twinge and then you are no more. As the orange wall of heat reaches you, you are incinerated along with everyone and everything you have known as part of your reality. OR the only other Alternative Reality: The weather has gotten warmer and warmer to the point that many people around you have begun to wear space suits. They are totally covered from head to foot in a pressurized and air-conditioned suit complete with a helmet that provides enough oxygen for the wearer to live and breathe comfortably. You can't afford such a Climate Suit, as they are called, so you try to get your errands done even though you can barely breathe. You're sweating all over your body, but so is everyone else who is not wearing a Climate Suit, which is most people at the time. There is some relief at night, but even nights are hot enough so that you can't get any sleep unless you spray yourself with water every few minutes. You turn your air conditioning unit on its highest setting, but there is not enough electricity to keep it running for more than a few minutes because it's being rationed everywhere. Your best friend, the family dog has been put down because the heat is now too much for any furry animals and most of them are dying by the billions, their carcasses littering the streets. There is no one to pick up their bodies because no one has that much energy for non-essential things. The TV news tells you that the government is working feverishly on the problem of the growing heat wave. Gas powered cars and trucks have been abandoned long ago. So, part of the problem is that there is no industrial infrastructure any more that can construct enough solar panels and wind turbines because there isn't enough food for workers or electrical power to manufacture anything at this point and everyone knows it would just add to the growing pollution of the air. All the trees have died out, or been used for heating and cooking years ago, the only natural element that could have saved us. Everyone lives hour by hour expecting the President to come on TV and finally admit that these are the final days for the stubborn lot of remaining citizens to stay alive. Soon, all oxygen will be depleted. When the President finally comes on the air and starts to finally admit to these things. you can feel the last few molecules of oxygen as they leave your lungs and makes you gasp your last gasp. This is the TIME BOMB. It's ticking down right now to the end of our existence here on Planet Earth. There is hope, although it is a fading one, and only if everyone within the sound of my voice learns how to defuse this FINAL TIME BOMB and begins taking the necessary actions listed in this book that can and will stop it ticking STARTING NOW!

Book excerpt: This is a book of real life stories of adopters which takes the reader through every stage of the adoption process starting with the moment when they decide that adoption is the right option for them to the stories of adoptees brought up by adoptive parents. In between, the book looks at all the different types of adoption that are carried out by all sorts of families from all sorts of children of every race and age and with every kind of problem. They range from babies who are only days old when they are taken into an adoptive family to teenagers with a multitude of psychological and physical problems. The book looks at both the success and failure of these adoptions. Its aim is to inform and enlighten professionals, adopters, potential adopters and all those whose lives have in some way been touched by adoption or want to know more about it. In 15 chapters it includes more than 70 real life stories which are all told from the heart sometimes in a moment of crisis and sometimes at a time of joy. They are not analysed, they are true stories about how it feels to be at the centre of adoption. All the stories, which have been recounted over the past 10 years, are reflective of adoption today in Britain. The book also includes a chapter on the legal aspects of adoption and a further chapter of useful information and addresses.

Evidence of accused killer Nidal Hasan¿s growing drift toward violent Islamist extremism was on full display during his military medical training, although his superiors took no punitive action. He suggested Muslim Americans in the U.S. military might be prone to commit fratricide. But, a slipshod FBI invest. into Hasan, coupled with internal disagreements and flaws in the agency¿s intelligence operations also contributed to the government¿s failure to prevent the attack. This report tracks Hasan¿s growing radicalization in the years before the attack and the numerous failures of the military to take action against him. A print on demand report.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A provocative philosophical investigation into the ethics of torture, The War on Terror, and making tough choices in exceptional circumstances. The general consensus among philosophers is that the use of torture is never justified. In Terrorism, Ticking Time-Bombs, and Torture, Fritz Allhoff demonstrates the weakness of the case against torture; while allowing that torture constitutes a moral wrong, he nevertheless argues that, in exceptional cases, it represents the lesser of two evils. Allhoff does not take this position lightly. He begins by examining the way terrorism challenges traditional norms, discussing the morality of various practices of torture, and critically exploring the infamous ticking time-bomb scenario. After carefully considering these issues from a purely philosophical perspective, he turns to the empirical ramifications of his arguments, addressing criticisms of torture and analyzing the impact its adoption could have on democracy, institutional structures, and foreign policy. The crucial questions of how to justly authorize torture and how to set limits on its use make up the final section of this timely, provocative, and carefully argued book.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From your baby's perspective, choosing the right nanny is probably the most important decision a parent can ever make: this book is about making the best possible choice. Coming home to an abused, badly injured, or even deceased child is a parent's most horrific, unimaginable scenario. And yet it happens: In 2012, two small children died while in the care of a nanny. The Nanny Time Bomb is the most accurate and comprehensive analysis of the current crisis in child care, offering case studies and practical advice to help parents make the most educated, well-informed decision when choosing a nanny for their child. The book takes the reader through various types of nannies—from graduates to undocumented workers—thus allowing parents to see how the industry has evolved far past schoolgirl babysitters. Setting itself apart, Jacalyn S. Burke's exploration of the different types of nannies offers a new perspective on child care not only for parents but also for those interested in larger sociological trends. This book gives a voice to the often-unheard grievances of nannies, showing why they may snap; explaining how to prevent tragedies; and describing how parenting has evolved. The author's examination of current cultural and social trends will be useful for a wide readership beyond parents.

This book was released on 2015-09-15 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many adopted or foster children have complex, troubling, often painful pasts. This book provides parents and professionals with sound advice on how to communicate effectively about difficult and sensitive topics, providing concrete strategies for helping adopted and foster children make sense of the past so they can enjoy a healthy, well-adjusted future. Approximately one of every four adopted children will have adjustment challenges related to their separation from the birth family, earlier trauma, attachment difficulties, and/or issues stemming from the adoption process. Common complicating issues of adopted children are feelings of rejection, abandonment, or confusion about their origins. While many foster and adoptive parents and even many professionals are reluctant to communicate openly about birth histories, silence only adds to the child's confusion and pain. This revised and significantly expanded edition of the award-winning Telling the Truth to Your Adopted or Foster Child equips parents with the knowledge and tools they need to communicate with their adopted or foster child about their past. Revisions include coverage of significant new research and information regarding the importance of understanding the child's trauma history to his or her well-being and successful adjustment in his foster or adoptive family. The authors answer such questions as: How do I share difficult information about my child's adoption in a sensitive manner? When is the right time to tell my child the whole truth? How do I obtain more information on my child's history? Detailed descriptions of actual cases help the parent or caregiver find ways to discover the truth (particularly in closed and international adoption cases), organize the information, and explain the details of the past gently to a toddler, child, or young adult who may find it frightening or confusing.
