Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Address Delivered Before the Medical Society of the State of Pennsylvania at Its Annual Session: Held in West Chester, in May 1857 In conformity with a usage set by the distinguished gentlemen who preceded me in the chair I now occupy, and in obedience, moreover, to the positive command of the society, as conveyed by a distinct resolution passed at the time, I am, as your presiding officer, to address you on some topic of general interest to us all, both as members of the medical profession at large, and. As part and parcel of the special organization in obedience to whose decrees we have assembled. As you may all readily presume, the selection of a topic suited to the occasion is no longer an easy task. The very largest number of those that might prove acceptable, and be fitting to offer to the consideration of an assemblage like the present, have been often discussed, in the form of addresses and reports by abler minds and more graceful pens, as well before this Society itself, as before kindred bodies and our noble parent the American Medical Association.
