Book excerpt: Quality of service provisioning in wireless ad hoc networks plays an integral part in determining the success of network-centric warfare as envisioned in future military operations. It requires good scalability of the QoS architecture since ad hoc networks in the battlefield tend to be large. Previous work attacking QoS in ad hoc networks seldom considers the scalability issues. In this paper, we propose a scalable QoS architecture for such networks. Our scheme draws upon the positive aspects of both IntServ and DiffServ, and extends upon the scalable LANMAR routing protocol to support QoS. The scheme is also capable of incorporating mobile backbone networks (MBNs) to further improve the scalability. Simulation results show that our proposed QoS architecture can achieve good scalability in terms of large network size and mobility.

Book excerpt: Quality-of-service (QoS) guarantees will play a critically important role in future mobile wireless networks. In this dissertation, we study a set of QoS-driven resource allocation problems for mobile wireless communications and networks. In the first part of this dissertation, we investigate resource allocation schemes for statistical QoS provisioning. The schemes aim at maximizing the system/network throughput subject to a given queuing delay constraint. To achieve this goal, we integrate the information theory with the concept of effective capacity and develop a unified framework for resource allocation. Applying the above framework, we consider a number of system infrastructures, including single channel, parallel channel, cellular, and cooperative relay systems and networks, respectively. In addition, we also investigate the impact of imperfect channel-state information (CSI) on QoS pro-visioning. The resource allocation problems can be solved efficiently by the convex optimization approach, where closed-form allocation policies are obtained for different application scenarios. Our analyses reveal an important fact that there exists a fundamental tradeoff between throughput and QoS provisioning. In particular, when the delay constraint becomes loose, the optimal resource allocation policy converges to the water-filling scheme, where ergodic capacity can be achieved. On the other hand, when the QoS constraint gets stringent, the optimal policy converges to the channel inversion scheme under which the system operates at a constant rate and the zero-outage capacity can be achieved. In the second part of this dissertation, we study adaptive antenna selection for multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) communication systems. System resources such as subcarriers, antennas and power are allocated dynamically to minimize the symbol-error rate (SER), which is the key QoS metric at the physical layer. We propose a selection diversity scheme for MIMO multicarrier direct-sequence code- division-multiple-access (MC DS-CDMA) systems and analyze the error performance of the system when considering CSI feedback delay and feedback errors. Moreover, we propose a joint antenna selection and power allocation scheme for space-time block code (STBC) systems. The error performance is derived when taking the CSI feedback delay into account. Our numerical results show that when feedback delay comes into play, a tradeoff between performance and robustness can be achieved by dynamically allocating power across transmit antennas.

Book excerpt: Wireless Mobile Ad-hoc Networks are characterized by dynamic network topology and lack of network infrastructure. The network fragments into smaller networks and merges over a period of time due to mobility. This makes provisioning solutions to common network problems, like routing and QoS provisioning, a challenging task. Services in ad-hoc networks face two-fold problems. Making nodes aware of the availability and the location of services in a dynamically changing network is difficult, especially when such services are not tightly coupled with a fixed infrastructure. Servers may come and leave the network. Nodes may shutdown services to conserve energy. The problem is further exacerbated by the limitations posed by the wireless network on the bandwidth and by the limited computational capability of the wireless devices. This thesis addresses the problem of providing continuous and guaranteed access to such centralized services in a mobile wireless ad-hoc network. A distributed algorithm based on the exchange of service provider information is proposed to solve the problem. The previous work addressing the same problem assumes that the nodes move in long-term groups. Our solution does not make this assumption and targets arbitrary motion. So, no attempt is made to correlate the movement of the nodes, in order to solve the problem. In this thesis, we illustrate that our approach achieves higher service availability than the previous methods at the cost of a higher number of service instances. The proposed algorithm converges after a time period equivalent to the average propagation delay of the service instance information from a service provider to its reachable nodes. The computational and communication complexity of the algorithm is theoretically proved to be O(slogn) and O(n[subscript g]2) where s is the number of service instances, n is the number of nodes in the ad-hoc network and n[subscript g] is the average number of nodes in a connected component of t.

Book excerpt: The need to support ubiquitous connectivity with higher data rate for mobile computers and communication devices are fuelling a growing interest in broadband wireless access (BWA) networks. WiMAX(Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access ), a technology based on IEEE 802.16 is a standard for Wireless Metropolitan Area Networks (Wireless MAN) which aims to provide broadband access in the "last mile" with QoS (Quality of Service) guarantees for heterogeneous class of services with different QoS requirements. The QoS requirements are given in terms of bandwidth, latency, jitter, reliability etc. Although IEEE 802.16 standard defined the QoS parameters, they do not specify how these QoS parameters are satisfied and it is an open issue for research. This book analyses the design of Adaptive Call Admission Control (CAC) scheme for QoS provisioning in IEEE 802.16 based WiMAX networks. This book will be helpful to post graduate students and especially to those who want to continue research in call admission control aspect of WiMAX networks and other cellular based networks.

As in wireless networks, the wireless network must also be capable of providing guaranteed quality of service (QoS) over the lifetime of mobile connections. Some challenging problems that appear in multimedia wireless networks, such as user mobility and shortage of bandwidth, influence the QoS provisioning for the users. In this thesis, we propose a new framework callef Adaptive quality of service(AdQoS) to guarantee the QoS of multimedia traffic. The objective that AdQoS framework tries to accomplish are minimum new call blocking and handoff dropping rates. The keys feature of this framework is the bandwidth reallocation scheme. This scheme is developed to control the bandwidth operation of ongoing connections when the system is overloaded. The other key feature is the bandwidth reservation scheme incorporating a user mobility prediction to manage QoS of the networks. Based on the mobility, bandwidth is reserved to guarantee the uniterrupted handoff process. A comparison between existing user mobility prediction and the proposed scheme is also presented. An integrated system, which combines the bandwidth Allocation Level technique and the user mobility prediction, is also proposed. The proposed user mobility prediction algorithm integrates the Received Signal Strength (RSS) measurement for the mobile terminal's intra-cell movement and aggregate history of mobile terminals for inter-cell movement. When compared with the conventional scheme proposed in the literature, the simulation results show that our proposed schemes reduces the new call blocking probabilities, the handoff dropping probabilities and reduce significantly the probability of terminating calss while still maintaning efficient bandwidth usage.

Book excerpt: In wireless ad-hoc networks spontaneously formed by mobile nodes, diverse node movements cause the network to partition into completely disconnected subnetworks. The network partitioning poses significant challenges to the provisioning of centralized service in the ad-hoc network, since as the result of partitioning, many mobile nodes become disconnected from the central server. In this thesis, we propose a collection of novel run-time algorithms that adaptively maintain the availability of the centralized service to all mobile nodes while minimizing the service cost incurred. We exploit the mobility pattern exhibited by mobile hosts. In particular, the central server predicts network partitioning using techniques to recognize the mobility pattern and replicate service in advance. The regular mobile nodes judiciously select service based on mobility similarity to adapt to the dynamic network partitionings. Our simulation results show the algorithms proposed can efficiently provide network-wide service accessibility in the frequently partitionable ad-hoc networks.

Book excerpt: This Synthesis Lecture presents a discussion of Quality of Service (QoS) in wireless networks over unlicensed spectrum. The topic is presented from the point of view of protocols for wireless networks (e.g., 802.11) rather than the physical layer point of view usually discussed for cellular networks in the licensed wireless spectrum. A large number of mobile multimedia wireless applications are being deployed over WiFi (IEEE 802.11) and Bluetooth wireless networks and the number will increase in the future as more phones, tablets, and laptops are equipped with these unlicensed spectrum wireless interfaces. Achieving QoS objectives in wireless networks is challenging due to limited wireless resources, wireless nodes interference, wireless shared media, node mobility, and diverse topologies. The author presents the QoS problem as (1) an optimization problem with different constraints coming from the interference, mobility, and wireless resource constraints and (2) an algorithmic problem with fundamental algorithmic functions within wireless resource management and protocols.
