Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest in acoustics continues to increase. Although this branch of science was concerned primarily with the promotion of qualitative and quantitative sound transmission until a few decades ago, emphasis is currently placed also on the limitation of sound nuisance and, by extension, the setting of boundaries for permissible sound levels in places \vhere people are found. This last aspect in particular is exercising more and more influence on the design of buildings and machines, and in town and country planning. In addition, sound vibrations, because of their physical characteristics, are being used increasingly in disparate disciplines such as navigation, medical investigation and non destructive materials research. The flood of publications resulting from this increased interest in acoustics has led to a growing number of people being confronted with terminology which had until quite re cently only been used by a relatively small group of specialists and had remained largely unknown as a result. This four language dictionary, based on 'W. Reichardt, Technische Akustik; Berlin 1979', has been compiled to make not only this literature but also the nomenclature of equipment and instructions for their use accessible to the specialist and the interested layman.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a dictionary of terms used in acoustics. It provides in-depth and informative definitions of the terminology and concepts used in acoustics. The terms are in alphabetical order. The science and technology of acoustics embrace an unusually wide range of disciplines, from aircraft noise reduction to ultrasonics in medicine, and from psychoacoustics to signal processing. The student of acoustics must become familiar with a corresponding range of specialist terms in order to communicate with others and to understand the literature. Here, for the first time, in one informative dictionary, are listed authoritative definitions covering most of the relevant fields, apart from music and speech, that the practicing acoustician needs to understand. The author has drawn on experience gained during a long career spent mostly at Southampton University's multidisciplinary Institute of Sound and Vibration Research and has been able to draw on the expertise of specialists in the various fields. The Dictionary of Acoustics is intended as a supplementary text for students students in acoustics, in the departments of Engineering and Physics. The Dictionary of Acoustics is also a valuable quick reference for researchers engineers and physicists in industry and academia who deal with acoustics.

Book excerpt: Applications of some selected soft computing methods to acoustics and sound engineering are presented in this book. The aim of this research study is the implementation of soft computing methods to musical signal analysis and to the recognition of musical sounds and phrases. Accordingly, some methods based on such learning algorithms as neural networks, rough sets and fuzzy-logic were conceived, implemented and tested. Additionally, the above-mentioned methods were applied to the analysis and verification of subjective testing results. The last problem discussed within the framework of this book was the problem of fuzzy control of the classical pipe organ instrument. The obtained results show that computational intelligence and soft computing may be used for solving some vital problems in both musical and architectural acoustics.

Book excerpt: How can a piano tuner obtain such high precision with no other measuring device than their own ears? How can a sequence of notes seem to rise continuously despite coming back periodically to the same notes? What are the possibilities and the limits of digital sound? These are a few examples of questions that are discussed in this book, which presents an overview on the nature of musical sounds, from their production by acoustic music instruments to synthesized sounds obtained with computers. The topics that are treated include sound propagation, Fourier and time-frequency analysis, psychoacoustics, analog and digital signal processing theory, computer science and MP3 sound compression, and of course... music!

Book excerpt: Essential concepts, theory and models of linear acoustics for engineers. This book introduces the basic concepts, theory and models of linear acoustics for engineers. Part one develops the theoretical framework (wave equations, Fourier theory, Helmholtz equation) and introduces key concepts (pressure, velocity, impedance, intensity, power, sound levels). Part two proposes a systematic review of the fundamental physical mechanisms of acoustics and discusses the associated mathematical models: reflection, absorption, resonance, guided propagation, radiation, diffraction, refraction, propagation in dissipative media, convected propagation, atmospheric propagation, fluid-structure interaction, sound transmission and insulation.
