Book excerpt: From Accomplice to Evil: "The world is simmering in the familiar rhetoric and actions of movements and regimes—from Hezbollah and al Qaeda to the Iranian Khomeinists and the Saudi Wahhabis—who swear to destroy us and others like us, and we are repeating the errors of the recent past. Like their 20th-century predecessors, they openly proclaim their intentions, and carry them out whenever and wherever they can. Like our 20th-century predecessors, we rarely take them seriously or act accordingly." Acknowledging the existence and actions of evil enemies means accepting that we are at war, and then designing and con duct - ing a strategy to win. Accomplice to Evil takes a com pre hensive look at the errors we have made in the past when dealing with a mounting enemy force, why we've refused to acknowledge the implications of a rising evil, and how we can defeat the forces that threaten us today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues for renewed understandings of academic activism, understandings that conceive of the ideas, arguments and scholarship of the academe as embedded within the practices of what the academy does. It examines why and how a renewed notion of academic activism informs a philosophy of higher education specifically in relation to teaching and learning. The book focuses on the theories and practices of teaching and learning, in particular how such pedagogical actions are guided by social, political and cultural influences outside of the university as a higher education institution. The authors advocate for a living philosophy of higher education that is commensurate with real actions and imaginary fictions of what constitutes higher education and what remains in becoming for the discourse. With a focus on South African social justice education, the book imagines pathways for academic activism to manifest in revolutionised pedagogical actions or actions that bring into contestation what already exists with the possibility for the cultivation of renewal.

It discusses all major facets of Iranian policy of interest to the United States: nuclear proliferation, revolutionary export and support for international terrorism, efforts to undermine the Israeli-Palestinian peace process, and violations of human rights. It compares developments in Iran to their perception in Washington, providing the clearest picture available yet of the discrepancies between the complex and elusive Iranian reality and its understanding in the United States.

Book excerpt: His Christian Heritage always led Willem to believe that the three Abrahamic faiths Judaism, Christianity and Islam shared a common God. 9/11 made him realize that there was something not true about this belief. In his research Willem soon discovered that Islam operates under a veiled threat under political correctness and that the teachings of Islam places the West in great danger. So then based on the information provided by the teachings of the Quran and the prophet Mohammad how should we respond to the cultural blindfold that political correctness has placed on us?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses various aspects of God’s causal activity. Traditional theology has long held that God acts in the world and interrupts the normal course of events by performing special acts. Although the tradition is unified in affirming that God does create, conserve, and act, there is much disagreement about the details of divine activity. The chapters in this book fruitfully explore these disagreements about divine causation. The chapters are divided into two sections. The first explores historical views of divine causal activity from the Pre-Socratics to Hume. The second section addresses a variety of contemporary issues related to God’s causal activity. These chapters include defenses of the possibility of special acts of God, proposals of models of divine causation, and analyses of divine conservation. Philosophical Essays on Divine Causation will be of interest to researchers and graduate students working in philosophy of religion, philosophical theology, and metaphysics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the unstudied eye, Matthew's gospel can seem a terse narrative, almost a historical document and not the tremendously spiritual (and doctrinal) storehouse that it is. Erasmo Leiva here acts as our guide, showing Matthew's prose to be not terse so much as economical--astoundingly so given its depth. The lay reader can derive great profit from reading this. Each short meditation comments on a verse or two, pointing to some facet of the text not immediately apparent. Leiva's work is scholarly but eminently approachable by the non-technical reader. The tone is very much gustate et videte, quoniam suavis est Dominus [taste and see how good the Lord is]-as it is "friend, come up higher!". The goal of the book is to help the reader experience the heat of the divine heart/the light of the divine Word. Leiva points to Matthew's gospel as being deeply ecclesial because it is first Christological. He comments on the Greek text, demonstrating to the reader nuances in the text that defy translation into English without serious revision of the text. Leiva uses linguistic analysis to aid the non-Greek reader with the literal meaning of the text; numerous quotes from the Fathers and the liturgy of the church demonstrate the way the Tradition has lived and read the Word of God. His theological reflection vivifies doctrine by seeking its roots in the words and actions of Jesus.

Book excerpt: This book explores the psychological nature of forgiveness for both the subjective ego and what Jung called the objective psyche, or soul. Utilizing analytical, archetypal, and dialectical psychological approaches, the notion of forgiveness is traced from its archetypal and philosophical origins in Greek and Roman mythology through its birth and development in Judaic and Christian theology, to its modern functional character as self-help commodity, relationship remedy, and global necessity. Offering a deeper understanding of the concept of "true" forgiveness as a soul event, Sandoval reveals the transformative nature of forgiveness and the implications this notion has on the self and analytical psychology.

Book excerpt: Karl Jommers is a straight-shooting therapist committed to helping blue-collar men overcome their reluctance to seek counseling, a mission instilled in him after the suicide of his steelworker father. After a cop is set up to be shot, Jommers must evaluate the two police officers involved. They both offer conflicting accounts, but neither is lying. Their divergent perspectives are blurred by their personal anxieties and politics. Where one sees acts of local corruption, the other envisions a government conspiracy that includes covert dispersion of anxiogenic chemicals. Jommers methodically tries to disentangle the discordance, but is faced with a quandary. He can’t square his patients’ differing views without first discerning the truth of what happened. But stepping outside his domain to investigate may jeopardize his faltering practice and possibly his life. As he labors to clear the angst-fogged lenses of others, he is forced to question the clarity of his own perception.

Book excerpt: Is it possible for one book to be the catalyst for a great spiritual awakening in the United States? It only took one stone from Davids sling to defeat the giant that held the armies of God at bay for 40 days. A rout ensued. The key is to hit the mark with one solid shot. The Message of Pain is a spot-on heart discussion about todays American experience and what God is doing right now in our midst. Broken dreams, hopes and lives are all around us. Too many find themselves reeling in pain for years from the damages of a poor choice, the cruelty of another (Evil) or simply an accident. The Message of Pain explains how a person can become trapped in the Pain Cycle to live a life where the giant of pain is the rule. Satan uses pain to convince us of a lie about God. Believing a lie about God gets you started in a cycle of pain. The Message of Pain helps you find your way out or understand a friend in the cycle of self destruction so you can be ready to help them out.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Named “The Book of the Year” by Lee Child in The Guardian From “master of the genre” (The Washington Post) and author of Leaving Berlin, a heart-pounding and intelligent espionage novel about a Nazi war criminal who was supposed to be dead, the rogue CIA agent on his trail, and the beautiful woman connected to them both. Seventeen years after the fall of the Third Reich, Max Weill has never forgotten the atrocities he saw as a prisoner at Auschwitz—nor the face of Dr. Otto Schramm. He was the camp doctor who worked with Mengele on appalling experiments and who sent Max’s family to the gas chambers. As the war came to a close, Schramm was one of the many high-ranking former-Nazi officers who managed to escape Germany for new lives in South America, where leaders like Argentina’s Juan Perón gave them safe harbor and new identities. With his life nearing its end, Max asks his nephew Aaron Wiley—an American CIA desk analyst—to complete the task Max never could: to track down Otto in Argentina, capture him, and bring him back to Germany to stand trial. Unable to deny his uncle, Aaron travels to Buenos Aires and discovers a city where Nazis thrive in plain sight, mingling with Argentine high society. He ingratiates himself with Otto’s alluring but damaged daughter, whom he’s convinced is hiding her father. Enlisting the help of a German newspaper reporter, an Israeli agent, and the obliging CIA station chief in Buenos Aires, he hunts for Otto—a complicated monster, unexpectedly human but still capable of murder if cornered. Unable to distinguish allies from enemies, Aaron will ultimately have to discover just how far he is prepared to go to render justice. “With his remarkable emotional precision and mastery of tone” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review), Joseph Kanon crafts another “gripping and authentic” (The New York Times Book Review) thriller that you won’t be able to put down.

Then one spring morning in 1996, one man, Kent Leppink, was found in the snow, shot in the head... Days before his death, Kent had removed Mechele's name from his million-dollar life insurance policy. She married a doctor, moved to Olympia, Washington, and began a new life. For years, Mechele's suburban friends never suspected a thing. She went to school meetings, hosted backyard barbeques, and was beloved by her neighbors. But authorities eventually found enough evidence to mount a case against her and an alleged accomplice. Did Mechele conspire to kill her ex-fiancé? Or is she the innocent victim as she claims? Seduced by Evil is the shocking true story about a love triangle that ended in mystery—and murder...

Book excerpt: Something sinister is unfolding in a Southern California church. The pastor and radio personality takes a prideful turn opening the door to a dark force that strikes without warning. The choices he makes thrust his family into a paranormal battle with eternal consequences. Under the cover of darkness, something evil enters the family home, leaving the mother for dead. When the son discovers that the father he idolizes was the mastermind behind the murder attempts, the story begins. The story is a tale of two fathers and the dramatic impact they have on a son's life. The deep scars caused by one father leads to a transition from the father who caused the scars to the one who heals them. The journey is unbelievable, except it really happened. Based on the author's true story. "With its gripping account of personal tragedies, Finding My Father probes into deep questions about the reality of evil. In the tradition of C.S. Lewis' Screwtape Letters, Kevin Albright surfaces dark questions about spiritual battles we all may face with Satan. It's a needed focus on the neglected area of where the battleground for our well being really lies." - Lorna Dueck, TV Host and Media Commentator, Context with Lorna Dueck, Faith Commentary Writer; The Globe and Mail "If you're looking for an authentic, frank story of God's redemption in the midst of turmoil, this book is for you". -Roger Cross, President Emeritus Youth for Christ/USA "...Finding My Father is a powerful portrayal of the journey we all need to be on to personally discover the father heart of God and his power to make you an overcomer." -Shane Gould, Lead Pastor Burlington Alliance, Ontario /Canada "This fantastic true story is a classic. It represents a young man re-building his life and soaring above his past with insight and vision." -Bonnie L. Parker, Executive World Missions Director ABEA, Founder of Living Springs Ministries "Kevin's story was engrossing, and his spiritual pilgrimage endearing. I rejoice in what he has found in our Heavenly Father a parent who will never fail him, unlike his earthly father..." -Bill Bjork, Senior Pastor Grace Bible Church, Phoenix, Arizona
