Eighty-four individuals were used from a sample of graduate and undergraduate students randomly selected from the California State University, Sacramento student email system SacLink. The sample consisted of Females (64), Males (19), and Other (1). Each participant, solicited through email, completed a consent form, demographic form, and four surveys. Questions consisted of inquiries about student's college generation status (first or non-first), as well as attitudes, thoughts and feelings towards motivation, academic achievement, and perceived social support. Results suggest there is a statistically significant difference between first and non-first-generation college students in perceived social support FSSQ t(82) = -14.80, p = .00, MSPSS t(82) = -7.12, p = .00, motivation AMS-C t(82) = -14.80, p = .00, AMQ t(82) = -7.12, p = .00, and academic achievement t(82) = -14.80, p = .00.

Book excerpt: Over the past two decades we have seen an increase in the number of students who are the first in their family to attend college. Research shows first-generation college students (FGCS) have lower academic success (GPA) than non-first-generation college students (NFGCS). Through this study, I will aim to replicate findings of differences in GPA between FGCS and NFGCS, and examine whther general perceived stress, perceived academic stress, academic self-efficacy, and social support mediated any relationship between generational status and GPA. Data were collected from three groups: 70 FGCS, whose parent(s) did not receive a college degree, 19 students with moderate parental secondary education (MPSE), whose parent(s) earned an associate's degree, and 45 NFGCS, whose parent(s) earned a bachelor's degree or higher. The full sample included 134 undergraduate students, 67 of whom were college freshmen. Participants completed a demographic questionnaire, the Perceived Stress Scale-14, the Academic Stress Subscale, the Academic Self-Efficacy Subscale, and the Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors. College GPAs were obtained from the NMHU Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Research. Separate one-way Analyses of Variance (ANOVAs) were used to examine if differences in college GPA, perceived stress, academic stress, academic self-efficacy and social support exists beteween FGCS, students with MPSE, and NFGCS. There were no significant differences in GPA between FGCS, students with MPSE, and NFGCS using the full sample or the freshmen sample (p>.10). There were no significant differences on Perceived Stress Scale scores, Academic Stress Subscale, Academic Self-Efficacy subscale scores, and Inventory of Socially Supportive Behaviors scores between FGCS, students with MPSE, and NFGCS in the full sample or the freshmen sample (p>.10). Using correlations, we also examined if general perceived stress, perceived academic stress, academic self-efficacy and social support are associated with GPA. Book excerpt: The current study explored the effects of non-traditional choices on psychological well-being. Participants were divided into groups by their generational status. First generation college students (FGC) reported that neither of their parents had any college experience while the students from college educated families (CEF) reported that one or both of their parents had some education beyond high school. The study utilized self-report, archival data. The Scales of Psychological Well-Being (Ryff, 1989) provided overall well-being scores as well as six subscales. The Multidimensional Scale of Perceived Social Support (Zimet, Dahlem, Zimet & Farley, 1988), two subscales of the Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire (Bake & Siryk, 1984), and the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (Rosenberg, 1965) were also used. These three constructs were also understood in their relationship to well-being. The results suggest that self-esteem and social support from friends are important factors for all college students. Academic adjustment appeared to be related to well-being for all students but was more predictive of well-being for the FGC students. In looking at perceived social support from family, FGC students indicated a negative correlation between this type of support and their feelings of autonomy. Similarly, a linear regression model for CEF students showed that perceived social support from family was one of three variables in a model predicting well-being. No significant group differences were observed in the reports of overall well-being, perceived social support, self-esteem, or adaptation to college. This was contrary to what was hypothesized, but may be the result of a unique sample which included many older, African American women who commuted to school. Considerations of the sample and its influence on the findings have been included. Suggestions for future research address the need to produce more generalizable findings and further differentiate between the needs of FGC students and the needs of new college students in general.

Students who are the first in their families to attend college may not have the support necessary to help them succeed, influencing a need for more college resources to assist students with becoming academically successful. The purpose of this quantitative causal-comparative study was to determine if there were significant differences in perceived self-efficacy between first-generation and non-first-generation African American college students. The independent variable was African American college student status: first-generation African American college students and non-first-generation African American college students. The dependent variables were perceived collective self-efficacy, perceived social self-efficacy, perceived academic self-efficacy, and perceived roommate self-efficacy. The College Self-Efficacy Inventory (CSEI), which measures collective self-efficacy and the three psychosocial factors: academic self-efficacy, roommate self-efficacy, and social self-efficacy, was used in this study. There was no significant difference in the collective self-efficacy of first-generation African American college students and non-first-generation African American college students as it relates to college self-efficacy. Additionally, there was no significant difference between the two groups in the subscales of: academic self-efficacy, social self-efficacy, and roommate self-efficacy. Given that self-efficacy is malleable, the results of this casual comparative study can be used by colleges to evaluate current programs and design new programs that meet the needs for first-generation students to be academically successful.

The influence of perceived social support, academic self-concept, academic motivation, and perceived university environment on university students' academic aspirations were investigated. Highest-aspiring students and typically-aspiring students were compared in order to determine any significant differences. Participants completed the Social Support Appraisals (SSA) and Social Support Behaviors (SSB) scales, Mentors Scale (MS), Academic Self-Concept Scale (ASCS), an academic motivation scale created by the author, the University Environment Scale (UES), and the Cultural Congruity Scale (CCS), as well as an item about academic aspirations. Results suggested that perceived social support, academic self-concept, and academic motivation were all significantly and positively correlated to academic aspirations, although the magnitude of the associations were modest. However, perceptions of the university environment were not correlated with academic aspirations. Students in the highest-aspiring group reported higher levels of perceived social support, academic motivation, and academic self-concept than their typically-aspiring counterparts. Exploratory analyses demonstrated significant gender, first-generation college attendee status, and family income differences.

Book excerpt: Abstract: First-generation college (FGC) students experience unique challenges when adapting to the college community, often hindering their academic performance and well-being. Previous research has attributed the achievement gap between FGC and non-FGC students to factors associated with socioeconomic status (SES) such as lack of financial and social support. Furthermore, FGC students may be contending with negative stereotypes about closely linked identities, like those associated with people from low SES backgrounds. The current study sought to develop a comprehensive theoretical model that brings together disparate lines of research, shedding light on the culmination of factors that contribute to FGC student underperformance. Additionally, results revealed that, for FGC students, anticipated stigma is associated with more psychological distress and a diminished sense of belonging in college, supporting the conceptualization of FGC status as a concealable stigmatized identity. Findings from the current study open new avenues for interventions that improve academic achievement and well-being among FGC students.

Book excerpt: In modern higher education, retention has become an ever-increasing problem for institutions of higher education. Among those fresh faces arriving on campus are first generation and non-first generation students. Each will arrive with their own ambitions, desires, strengths, and weaknesses. For non-first generation students, there is a perception of having been there before. They have parents or siblings that have attended post-secondary institutions before them, they speak the language, and they know the hoops to jump through. On the other hand, there are first generation students who, other than university employees and administrators, when they arrive may not have a single person that they can speak to concerning their fears and expectations for the first year. This study examined the self-reported levels of self-efficacy and motivation among first year students at a liberal arts college. Second, the survey asked about the students' level of college preparedness, including advanced credit, hours of study per week and course registration. Finally, the survey also collected data on first year challenges typically associated with all first year students including weight gain, sleeplessness, consumption of alcohol and inquired about academic dishonesty. The overarching question that this study aimed to examine was there a difference between self-reported levels of self-efficacy and motivation among first generation and non-first generation students. Secondly, did first year challenges play a factor at all in how they viewed their first year and to compare the two groups for those differences. The results of the quantitative analysis were compiled and there were a number of assumptions that ended up not really having much merit in fact and some others that held true to long held beliefs. The study showed that first generation students do have less self-efficacy than do non-first generation students, however their levels of motivation are not all that different from their classmates. The results also showed some differences concerning how the students handled their first year experiences regarding weight gain and their academic dishonesty. Once the results of the study were known, a number of conclusions and findings were discussed, including recommendations for practice and recommendations for future research.
