Book excerpt: Through the 'magic' of averages it is shown that Maxwell's equations can be used in a simple way to describe filamentary composites as well as pure bulk superconductors. The second edition of AC Loss and Macroscopic Theory of Superconductors, like the first edition, is written for both physicists and engineers. It starts with a rigorous and partial

Book excerpt: Studies on ac losses in superconductors have been a subject of great interest for a long time not only as an important topic in fundamental science, but also as a basic requirement for the application of superconductors. A proper understanding of the mechanisms of ac losses and their quantitative knowledge is an essential requirement for any application. Such studies not only yield information on the material parameters crucial for applications but can also provide a test for any possible microscopic theory of superconductivity. The main focus of the current thesis is to understand the mechanisms of ac losses in superconductors and to gain more knowledge on the ac dissipative behavior of type II superconductors. In this thesis we report our investigations on the ac losses in certain type II superconductors at different ranges of frequency through different experimental techniques. We have investigated the ac losses that arise in high Tc superconducting single crystals at rf frequency (8 MHz) using a simple LC oscillator technique. The result shows a surprising ac dissipation behavior in which the loss in the superconducting state is more than the normal state loss. Even though the superconducting state is defined as the zero resistive state, this is true only for dc transport. The ac resistivity studies have been made also on high Tc polycrystalline samples using the standard four-probe technique using a lock-in amplifier (100 kHz). The result shows different ac resistive behavior for samples with different microstructures. Non-resonant microwave absorption (NRMA) studies in MgB2 thin films is reported for the first time. The experiment has been performed using a continuous wave X band EPR spectrometer. The recorded signals give information on the ac losses that occurs at microwave frequency (9.43 GHz). The effects of ac magnetic field on the superconductors have been investigated through a dc four-probe resistivity measurements in the presence of an ac field of dif.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprehensive coverage of superconductivity from the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering Engineering Superconductivity features fifty articles selected from the Wiley Encyclopedia of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, the one truly indispensable reference for electrical engineers. Superconductor technology has made highly advanced experiments possible in chemistry, biochemistry, particle physics, and health sciences, and introduced new applications currently in use in fields from medicine to cellular communications. Taken together, these articles-written by acknowledged experts in the field-provide the most complete and in-depth accounting of superconductivity in existence. The book brings together a wealth of information that would not be available to those who do not have access to the full 24-volume encyclopedia. This thorough survey looks at the application of superconductors from an engineer's practical perspective rather than a theoretical approach. Engineering Superconductivity provides full coverage of the fundamentals of superconducting behavior and explains the properties and fabrication methods of commercially produced superconductors. Up-to-date material on superconductor applications as well as competing technologies is included. The fifty articles presented here are divided into three sections: Superconductivity and magnetism Superconductors Applications and related technology Engineering Superconductivity is a complete and up-to-date reference for engineers, physicists, chemists, materials scientists, and anyone working with superconductors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents detailed discussions of several of the large scale applications of superconductivity which will have major economic impact on technical developments in the industrial world. The world wide concern with energy problems makes this work particularly timely. Some of the large scale devices and systems such as superconducting generators, motors, power transmission, large magnets, high speed ground transportation and industrial processing clearly speak directly to improved efficiencies of generation and utilization of energy. The articles treat each subject in depth. The text is suitable for advanced undergradu ate or graduate engineering or applied science courses. The text should also be of immediate use to practicing engineers and scientists in applied superconductivity. The unique summaries of national efforts in applied superconductivity will also be valuable to industrial and government plan ners. The book is based on a NATO Advanced Study Institute entitled, "Large Scale Applications of Superconductivity and Magnetism" which was held September 5 to 14 in the Hotel des Alpes, Entreves, Valle d'Aosta, Northern Italy. This Study Institute represented a departure from other NA TO Advanced Study Institutes in that it was very strongly directed toward engineering applications rather than purely scientifically oriented interests. The planning of this Institute developed over several years and would not have been possible without continued interest by several key NATO Scientific Mfairs Division scientists. It started when one of us (S. F. ) met with Dr. H.
